LASD RENEWALS TIMELINE

Hey All,

Here for my 2nd renewal. Current permit expires on Jan 20 next year. Submitted my application a week ago and sent off my firearms last week as well to get milled and get some work done. I figured it would take them a good while for me to get the "proceed with the training" notice. Boy was I wrong. I got the email today to proceed for training 10 days after I submitted my application. It will take about 5 more weeks to get my firearms back. Good thing I have 60 days to complete the training. If I would have known it would be this quick I would not have sent them off until after training was completed.

• Renewal application submitted on 12/8/2025
• Proceed to training received on 12/26/2025
• Training completed and submitted on 1/10/2026

The facts:
First renewal
Expires 2/22/26
Application submitted 11/24/25 exactly 90 days prior to expiration

• Applicants should not complete firearms training UNTIL instructed to do so by the CCW unit.

• LASD will not accept an applicant’s proof of training dated more than one year prior to the date of LASD’s initial determination (date of this email) that the applicant is not a disqualified person pursuant to Penal Code section 26202 (d)(1).

My conclusions:
Going to the required training early is possible
LASD has worked out the issues with renewals. Good Job Deputies!
Thought there may be delays due to the holidays, there apparently were not

I picked up my renewal card yesterday. Just a heads up, the pick up date becomes your new expiration date. So the fact that I was proactive worked against me. On a positive note, you can now park in the lot in front of the building.

03/09/26 Submitted the renewal application

03/14/26 Done training with Southwest TRAINING CENTER
03/16/26 Received the certificate.
03/16/26 Upload the certificate to permitium system
03/23/26 Received the final payment notice and got the approval once it was paid.
I will choose the pick-up date later. I don't want to waste 2 months.
The 2nd renewal is much faster than the 1st renewal 2 years ago.

All the may appointments were booked and I didn’t want to risk going into June. Looks like they have the process down now.

Glad I came and read the thread. While I do not live in Cali, I have a few employees that do. I schedule projects around various dates, CCW pickups is one of them. I expected the pickup date to be around the expiration date of the permit, + or - a week or so. I was surprised when I was told this morning by one of my employees that he is picking up his permit almost 5 weeks earlier than expiration due to lack of appointments. That will impact the project he is working on, it's in Southern Arizona, so he needs to be in LA for 3 days. Probably would not be so bad if the permits expired every 5 years, but every 2 years and so early is ridiculous.

6/20 app summitted, 6/29 training authorization, 8/7 will go for a pickup,

Kudus to LASD, not only took them 6 weeks to complete the renewal, they are now have a free guests parking next to the building and card picked up at the entrance by showing ID, no questions asked. Hopefully by next renewal they'll discover USPS mail services.

Apparently there was a settlement involving LASD? Maybe that had something to do with all these timely renewals? The video is based on various coverage from 2A media, like this.

Picked up my renewal permit. From renewal submission to pickup, took exactly 4 weeks. It was very quick this time around.

The DOJ just issued a press release regarding the settlement today.
