I'm usually a lurker around here and its been a while. Can someone let me know if we're still required to carry our paper LTC or can we finally just carry our picture ID card LTC that was originally issued with the paper version?

San Diego county is still paper only. Bummer.

Actually, DOJ has only authorized the paper copy; regardless of what certain IA's do or say. I carry both, though I don't know why...

I use the SD plastic along with my AZ card to sandwich the folded SD paper between them. So it has a use. LOL

Good idea! I just may do that as, again I don't know why, I also carry my AZ permit.

                  Carry the paper.

The state still has not blessed the card yet and, thus, the paper is still the recognized legal permit, not the plastic. Your particular IA might be cool with the plastic but you could get pulled over by an officer from another jurisdiction who doesn't recognize the plastic.

Just fold the thing up and shove it in your wallet. There's really no need to mess with trying to get it laminated and then hope it fits. The paper only needs to last for two years so it should be fine. I just figure if my wallet goes swimming or something, I'll just call my IA and ask for new paper.

The problem would be staffing and the CA DOJ. Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done about that. The DOJ doesn't just handle CCW's. Now, if they're slow-walking the paperwork, that's a different story.

The wait for appointments has nothing to do with DOJ. It's the Sheriff's office. I just set an appointment a few minutes ago, earliest is now March 23, 2023. Yes that's ridiculous. However I'll give them a partial pass for a bit, the ruling was just days ago, and they aren't staffed for such a rapid increase in applications. Based on some other posters from yesterday, they are getting an entire month's worth of appointments filled, every day, at least. And it will probably get worse once word gets out beyond those of us who pay close attention. "Wait, I can get a permit now? Sign me up!". It will take them time to get more capacity, probably have to hire more people, that means getting budget adjustments, etc. That's just the mechanical reality of bureaucracy.

Yes. I had to call them like the day after I post here and they said after they sent it out to be delivered they close out your case.

They ship it like the Wednesday and I got it the Saturday afternoon in the mail.

Idk if it’s the same for every county but it seems for some people SD county, once they close the case it won’t say delivered.

She also told me they have like a deadline when sending out the permit. For example my permit shown 0 days so they had to send it out ASAP.

The whole process for me from start to receiving my permit was January 31, 2022 to June 18, 2022.

I got lucky with the appointment date though

Yup, 45 days from expiration. The system only wants you to upload your DL, DD214 if applicable, training certificate & the two proofs of residency; no good cause. Even before the SCOTUS decision there was no request for GC.
So given that, when should one schedule the CCW refresher course?

The web site says it has to be within 90 days of renewal, and you can't apply for renewal until 45 days prior to expiration. But if all the NEW applications gum up the system, the renewal might take more than 45 days. So, it would seem one would want the refresher course at something like 46 days prior to expiration to give it the longest life. Just in case...

                          Thoughts?

Sounds reasonable, we just don't know the future.
Renewals have been processing super fast these days. It may not get impacted as much as we think. And of course we don't have much choice just do what we are supposed to do as soon as we are allowed to do it. I think some instructors will just renew the date on the training if you need them to.

I was referring to the 90-day period between interview and issuance/denial. When I applied in 2019, my initial interview date was 8 month away; and that got delayed because of the china virus. When I got mine, I was told there was just one deputy assigned to the background/firearms check.

I took my refresher course almost two weeks ago and I can't apply until 7/6. I would get the training sometime between day 90 & day 45; that should cover you. My instructor did say renewals were running around 4 weeks. IMHO, renewals are much quicker than initial issuance as there's less to research.
