It's a little hard to argue with the geographical origin of the name. From Google's A.I. -

The South Bay in Los Angeles County received its name directly from its geography. The region sits along the lower, southern half of the crescent-shaped Santa Monica Bay.

Stretching southward from Playa del Rey down to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, these coastal communities naturally form the "south bay" shoreline. Today, this 16-city region includes well-known beach towns like Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach.
Want to argue because it's presented by A.I.? Okay... How and when did the South Bay come to be known by that name?

Eugene, you clearly are not a sailor or waterman are you? A "bay" is simply an indentation in a coastline. It could be small and narrow (fjord), or extend further inland (estuary), or even be very, very large, and then we call those a gulf.

Jethro Tull wrote a song about folks like you. In fact, an entire album is named for it.

10 bonus points to anyone here who can name the album and song by Jethro Tull I'm speaking of?

I still think calling that tiny indentation a bay is really stretching the definition. But since those in southern Cal have their peculiarities, I’ll let it slide.

Me too, I have currently at least a couple of dozen.

I had a few dozen more a few years ago before my garage and house fire. After the fire we had to stock up again.

                        Stocking up is always fun!
