rules for selling: need some clarification

    Hi, guys -

I realize I should know this already, but I need some clarification on the rules of precedence when selling a gun on CG.

I posted an ad last night. I gave no specific instructions on how to respond (my mistake). I got a PM from someone who stated his intention to buy the gun. He did not post an "I'll take it." I didn't tell him that he needed to post an "I'll take it." (My second mistake; he's very junior to CG.) We discussed how we'd proceed, but we didn't come to a firm commitment on a sale (though he may feel otherwise).

This AM, someone else posted an "I'll take it" and followed up with a PM. It's my recollection that this person did all the right things, and so is probably entitled to the gun.

I realize that I've probably contributed to a situation in which someone will inevitably be unhappy, but I want to remedy this as per CG rules/convention. Can someone advise me on who should have the priority here?

    Thanks.

    Hello Michael,
I'm new to this site, other than just skipping through doing a lot of reading. i SURE hope you get an answer because I'd like to do some purchasing and I don't have a clue as to how to get it done. So I'm wih you. Maybe someone will jump in here and give us some info.
    Thanks for posting the question!

There is no 'rule' about who gets the item. It''s up to the seller to decide. Generally, an unconditional "I'll take it" in the thread is the person that should have first-rights to it. But if you were negotiating with someone on PM and they committed, then I'd go with them. I would certainly advise the guy on PM's that you have a firm commitment and give him first shot at it. If he wobbles, then go with the 'I'll take it' guy. The 'I'll take it' guy may not be as firm as you think either.

I make up my own rules in the initial post so there's no confusion. First posted 'I'll take it' in the thread gets it. PMs don't count. No questions about it then.

Post 'I'll take it' in the thread and then follow up with a PM to the seller. Don't say you'll take it if you have questions or conditions. Get that taken care of first and then post. To send a PM (Private Message) to someone - place the cursor over their username and click. Options will appear including 'send private message to ----'.

It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

Thanks, olhunter. I think most people here use your convention, and that's what I went with (though somewhat after the fact, which I now regret). Since I never came to commitment with the first person who PMed me, I sent him a message that I would sell to the person who posted the "I'll take it." I haven't heard back from him; I hope I didn't give him an unfavorable first impression of CG.

Like olhunter said, there is no rule about who gets the gun (Unless they have revised the Marketplace rules yet again....just kidding, but not really) You as the seller have a right to sell your stuff to the calgunner you want to. However, traditionally the first unconditional, "Ill take it, normally gets it. I go with the first person to contact me who looks like they are willing to meet my terms without flaking.
