Can you tell me about my A5 Browning
I came across this recently and have no history on it. It is in real nice shape except for the under side of the barrel where the bluing leave a lot to be desired. Th serial number puts it's manufacture date at 1955 but the serial number on the barrel does not match. The engraved stock set is very nice, but I don't think they are original. Any info would be much appreciated.

The butt pad tells a bit of story in itself as that mark is of a US military club in Europe. The (probably original) owner likely bought the gun locally in Europe while in the service and later brought it back. Alternately, it may have changed hands several times over there, as does happen, until someone finally brought it back. Given the condition of the bluing and the barrel this seems like a good possibility.
It's also possible that it could have been a club owned gun that was handled and shot a lot, that a soldier bought of the used rack at some point. The original barrel might have been damaged or re-purposed and the current barrel installed. The carving on the stock is very likely aftermarket, as you suspect, and looks very German so I'd guess a local artist did that work. The Germans have always been big on embellishing wood in that manner. It's likely that it's not the original wood and that the carving was executed on a take off set and the original wood was replaced and used elsewhere on another carving project. All in all a very interesting gun. The abundance of proof and hall marks could be a fun research project to sort out.

That is some great insite, thank you very much. The artwork on the stock has a distinctly European flare to it and upon closer inspection, looks to be hand done.
