Default Magnetospeed Range Report: Barrel mounted chronograph

I received my new Magnetospeed chronograph in the mail yesterday and took it to the local indoor range at lunch to try it out. I was able to mount it on the barrel of my Hi-Point 4095TS upside down of the usual “bayonet” orientation. I plugged it in and it started right up, registering every shot I fired and letting me create three strings of shots. I saved the data to the SD card and loaded it into my computer with no problems. I like this nifty little device very much.

I chose the to test it on my Hi-Point carbine because I have data from previous tests of my optical Chrony F1 system to compare against. I also have some of the same ammo from the same boxes left over. I shot the optical data in Dulzura CA and the magnetic data in Kearny Mesa CA. There are unknown elevation and hot barrel differences (shot more in Dulzura).
The nature of the devices made setup and operation very different. The optical chronograph required good outdoor light and alignment of the carbine, chronograph, and target. The magnetic sensor of the Magnetospeed clamped to the barrel of the carbine, works indoors, and was indifferent to the orientation of the carbine and target.

The magnetic system was not effected by the guy with the M1 blazing away in the lane next to mine, where I have had interference and errors from the optical system in similar circumstances. My local gun range allowed me to use the magnetic system but will not allow anyone to bring in a optical chronograph. This is a policy and not a hardware issue, but it does bear on the usefullness of the competing technologies.

The velocity measurement results were very close. Here is the ammo I used and the data collected.

I am very happy with the Magnetospeed system so far and look forward to trying it out on my rifles. Has anyone else used one of these yet?
