AR flashhider Removal

How to I unscrew this flash hider? My and my bro tried for a while with a wrench and hammer with no luck, Even heated up with the stove.

Any tips? The search option yielded "Unscrew the thing!" so don't reprimand me.

Youll have to hold the bbl in a vice with some type of soft jaw to correctly remove it. It may only have the lock washer holding it but depending where it came from it may also have loctite holding it. Silver solder is also a possibility. Good luck.

Is it a 14.5" barrel with the 1.5" flash hider? Then it would be pinned or silversoldered.

Yep. Barrel vise and a wrench is the "proper" way. I made a barrel vise out of 2 2x2's. Placed them in a vise and drilled a 3/4" hole through the end in between the blocks (so when you take the blocks out of the vise you have a semi-circle in each one). Then I placed the upper in between and cranked down on the vise. I ended up breaking the wood (it was only pine) but was able to remove a the flash hider and install a brake before the wood disintegrated.

or have it on the gun and hold the stock with your feet i have done a couple that way but yes Barrel vise and a wrench is the "proper" way...

One hand on the barrel, one hand on the flash hider. Twist.

Otherwise:

Use barrel vise, otherwise you will damage upper receiver.

Use a vise and wood or rubber clamps, worked for me.

acually.. take the upper off your OLL
take a dremel or similar and follow this

I ground down far enough to find the pins but they wouldn't budge, so I took my dremal and used a cut off wheel to cut the comp in half. Make sure you do this right down the middle of the pin.

Then using a cold chissel, I split the comp. When I did this, it loosened the pins up.

I turned the pin by using the slot cut down the middle of the pin. Then I ground around the pin, using the cut off wheel until I had enough room to grab the pin with a needle nose pliar.

After the pin is out, cut down the middle a bit more, to connect the hole to the rest of the cut. Then split the comp open using the chissel.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember, that most of the Mini-Y's came on 14.5" barrels, and you MUST install a muzzle device that will get the barrel back to 16" or more (Phantom, Vortex) and that MUST be permanently installed, in a fashion acceptable and documented by the ATF.

AS SOON AS YOU TAKE THE BRAKE OFF, your barrel will make your AR a SBR, which is illegal, unless you have registered it and payed the ATF stamps, etc. Do not assemble your barrel back on the rifle until you have installed the new device permanently, and dont wait a long time to get the new device installed..... or "plan to" "someday" get it mounted permanently. The reward does not match the risk. [%|]

I dont agree with the above legalities, at all... but they warrant mentioning.

If you have a permanent attachment on your barrel, you should NOT remove it unless you thoroughly understand the legal issues. If your barrel is less than 16 inches, it will be illegal once you remove the flash hider. Even if you don't assemble your rifle, there is a legal risk.

You are much better getting a new 16 inch barrel. and re-building your upper, or just buying a new upper.

Maybe the legal eagles can step in, but I thought constructive possesion (unless full auto) is OK in PRK. In other words, as long as it is not mounted it is OK.

I believe the constructive posession issue applies to all federal laws, such as the NFA which includes machine guns, sbrs and destructive devices.
