hi-point
Hello, I'm new to the forums and I have a question about the legality of a handgun so I hope this is in the right forum. A friend wants to trade me a Hi-point 45 but I see that they are not on Californias list of approved handguns. If I aquire this pistol what problems would I run into? Is it illegal to own? Thanks.

It's legal to own and transfer. The roster only applies to the handguns dealers can sell you.

What he said^^^^^ as long as the gun was legally obtained by your friend and you go through a FFL.

Just make sure you handle the transfer thru an FFL.

I don't know if that weapon has standard cap mags (Greater than 10 rounds). So it would be a no go if standard caps were included? [REF <]As I don't know if CA has any regulations on if a Mag is required for the transfer of a handgun. Anytime a standard cap was involved with my FFL he would just mark on the receipt as Mag=Rebuild kit. YMMV

Any weapon is better than no weapon, but 'Hi-Point', 'Lorcin', 'Jennings'... there's just no need to buy crap like that. Imagine something going bump in the night and all you have to reach for is your $100 jammamatic gangster stovepipe special....

I heard they shoot very well if you hold them sideways and pumped your arm forward everytime you fire off a shot while yelling, "Hells yeah, fool! Take dat! Who da man, now?"

Are hi points like Mosin rifles? You can buy six of them for the price of a good pistol? Except Mosin's are actually good...

If my friend let me buy one or offered to trade me a hi point, he would be on friend probation for a while, if not just kicked off the friend roster entirely.

hi-points
Thanks for the advice, we did everything legal and are good to go. Ive done a lot of research on hi-points and have found that people who own them really like them and people who don't really like to put them down. To each his own no offense taken. Actually I've heard that most gangsters prefer, and can afford, glocks. For me handguns are strictly for fun. When something goes bump in the night I'm reaching for the mossberg 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck.

no haters. some of us cannot afford a nice glock or s&w. I needed a cheap pistol for protection and bought the hi point 9mm. works the same as any other gun I've fired of that cal.

Just funnin' with ya boys. As long as it works, a pistol is better than a golf club or whatever. My first actual use of a forearm for self defense was with a Daewoo DP51 that I bought for under $300.

You should just buy a Sig 225 9mm/p6. They usually go for around the same price as a high point and way better quality... Or you could buy a Makrov too..

That's what im saying... Hi points are disposable pistols. " Fire and forget" alot of criminals use those, no real loss to them...

I've been tempted to grab a Hi-Point just for a "toss it around" type gun, but I do not want to waste a 1-in-30 incase a GSG 1911 becomes available.

Hi point is a no go. Ive seen two shows in which that weapon has jammed after a few rounds. 1 was when a dummy decided to lead cops on a high speed chase and shoot his hi point out the sun roof and it jammed up. He's lucky the cops didn't shoot him but they were probably to busy laughing at him
2. A man is assualted he reports the incident to the cops. Right after giving his report he goes to find his attackers. He then catches up to them and fires on them with a hi point. Guess what it jams. Police respond and find the victim with a jammed hi point. Don't waste your money. Given these were used in crimes and no one was hurt is a good thing. A good guy using one for self defense = dead. 1. Episode of cops 2. Episode of rookies ( like cops reality show first season) |

I just think it is so funny how people will go on and on bashing the Hi-Point saying that when the need arrives it will jam.
First of all, I bet you guys that a lot of this people that would not touch a Hi-Point with a 10ft pole because it is unreliable drive their kids around on high mileage vehicles with bald tires and with the check engine or air bag light on. Second, what are the real chances of you having to point and actually shoot someone? Do you really think that an intruder looking at the barrel of the gun at 3am in a dark home will make fun of you and dare you to shoot because you have a Hi-Point? And plus, if SHTF and the gun does jam, you can throw all the 17 lbs of it at the attacker and knock him down. |

Heck, that HiPoint is so ugly the bad guy will run in fear at the sight of that thing. Still, if it were not for my pending GSG purchase I would get one "just because." Everyone has seen the torture tests by now. That thing just keeps on working. I have heard that it has a few issues when new but smooths out after a few range trips. For less than $150 you really can't go wrong and since it is so cheap, if it ends up being a jam-o-matic throw it away and you are out very little cash. I go through that much in ammo on a day to the range anyway.
