Default Help me decide how to spend $2000!

So I've got about $2000 extra kicking around and I think it's about time for a new gun. Lately I've been kicking around the idea of getting another FN five-seven, I had one when I used to be an LEO, however I sold it because I didn't reload at the time and the ammo was expensive. I started reloading after I sold it so I imagine I could get the ammo cost down now. I also still have three 20 round mags for it since I sold it to a non-LEO who couldn't have them so the issue of not having full mags for it isn't a problem for me.

There are other two options I was also thinking about. The first is getting a larger caliber rifle since the biggest one I currently own is a 30-30 and I'd eventually like to have something along the lines of a 300 Win Mag or 300 Remington Ultra Mag. The second was to buy reloading equipment for the couple of calibers for which I don't currently reload as well as some stuff like a chronograph, a quality rifle rest and a large amount of reloading components since we won't be able to mail order ammo early next year.

Anyway, just thought I could use some outside perspective since I honestly can't make up my mind. Thanks.

Oh, one more thing, I do have a CCW but can only list 3 handguns on it. Currently I have my S&W 2" .38, my HK USP Compact .40 and a Kimber Ultra Raptor II. If I bought another handgun and wanted to carry it I'd have to drop one of those from my CCW. Thoughts or suggestions?

Oh man, nice problem to have. I have a list of three guns that I want should I come into some money. If only. I would buy the gun and the reloading equipment. On the other hand, I love buying basic rifles and then tooling around with them to make them just a little better. There is nothing like free floating a barrel, glass bedding, and smoothing out the trigger on a rifle all by yourself.

Send it to me, so I can buy all the gun pr0n you can look at (and use, should you ever come out here)! :P

But a Remington 700 in either of those two high-powered calibers and a good set of reloading equipment + supplies, you can get for about 2 grand. Maybe 2 and some change.

I have a Bushmaster XM-15 with a 16" barrel, ACOG, surefire vertical grip and light, etc as well as plenty of 30 rounders. I bought the rifle and mags and registered it when I was an LEO so I'm set in that department. I also have plenty of shotguns, both for defense and for waterfowl. My regular deer rifle is a Remington 700 in 7mm-08 and with my handloads I'm comfortable to 400 yards with it. Also have a couple of .22 rifles and a .22 pistol. The reason I was thinking about another five-seven was that I'd hate to not replace it when I have a chance and then regret it later on if it got banned or taken off the roster. I also have a thing for somewhat unusual guns, so things like the five-seven appeal to me. Sounds like people here are recommending getting a larger rifle though, so maybe I'll start looking. Keep the suggestions coming!

Do you have any armor? Buy a concealable IIIA bullet-resistant vest for 400-550 dollars. Spend the rest however you like, although I would probably buy more defensive purpose factory ammo, ESP. handgun ammo (JHP's, SP, etc).

Also, since you own Five Seven hi-caps AND you have potential to reload for it, down the line I would get one.

You already have some nice handguns. Do you have any rifles?

A nice WinMag would go nice with that reloading equipment...

Patriot_Man
I have 2 1911's, a Kimber Ultra Raptor II and a very old 1911 which is a family heirloom. The two areas I'm lacking in are the large caliber rifle and revolvers. I much an autoloader for ease of reloading I do like my S&W .38 for carrying in a pocket when it's too hot to wear anything that will cover a holster.

OceanBob, out of curiosity, why do you think the five-seven will increase in value?

Cali-Shooter
I do have a level IIIA soft vest which I had fitted and made for me while an LEO, as well as a plate carrier with plates and a MICH helmet, although I'm not holding my breath waiting for it to be needed. Nice to have though...

I'll sell my remington 870 to you for the one-time-only price of $1999.

Did I mention it has an Allen butt cuff on it? That's an extra 6 rounds at your finger tips.

dude why am I hating you right now. "You have everything, I have NOTHING!"
anyways sorry 'bout that. seems you got yourself ready for WW3.
If your gut says FN57, then you should get it.
How about a Remington 5R? Comes in .308 for sure and 300win I think. About a grand on gunbroker, Leopold mark4 for 700-800, harris stand, etc. Should get you to about the 2 grand mark -- also something I don't have.
Good luck. Do let us know what you decide on. Almost feels like I'm shopping.

The ammo might not be so much of an issue as CGF is at the ready with what looks to be a quick case to shoot down AB962. I'd recommend finding a Rem 700 with 5R barrel.

Do you shoot any USPSA or IDPA? If not I would look into that. Your Kimber will do fine for single stack competition. If I were in your shoes here is how I would spend it.

8 Wilson 47d magazines.
10,000 Wolf large pistol primers
Blade Tech 1911 quad magazine holster
Blade Tech 2 magazine holster
Blade Tech 1911 paddle holster
Good quality belt
8lbs of 231
5000 Missouri major PF #68 H&G LSWC
FO front sight for Kimber

If you have anything left over get more powder and bullets.

Good suggestions here, I've thought about shooting some USPSA or IDPA but the reality of my situation is that with a wife and three kids and another one coming any day now I don't get much time out of the house to go shooting. If I do get out of the house I'm probably going hunting or to some public land where I can shoot all of my guns instead of just one.

As far as getting a custom 1911, I've toyed with the idea before but decided against it for a couple reasons. The main reason is I doubt I'll ever have the time to acquire and maintain the skill level which would make owning a Wilson Combat or similar gun any better than something from like my Kimber.

I hadn't heard of the Remington 5R, althoug I've previously looked at the M24 and discarded the idea due to cost. Are these rifles as accurate as an M24? I guess it doesn't matter since it definately shoots better than I do but it would be nice to have a rifle I know I won't ever catch up with....

I've thought about getting a glock, probably the Glock 22 since I have lots of mags, holsters, etc. left over from when I was an LEO. The thing is it just doesn't sound very exciting so I'm either looking for something unusual, hence the five-seven, or something for good long range shooting. I looked into the 5R but unfortunately it doesn't come in anything larger than .308 and I'm looking for 300 win mag or the equivalent....

In this economy I'd say save that $2K. But if you must spend it then a really nice 1911 would be a great choice. So would an M1A or a Kimber 84M in .308 with a nice scope.

I think you mentioned you did not have a revolver in your stable. Then by all means get a Colt Python.

The search, find, acquisition and finally ownership of this gun is an enjoyable journey in itself.

Then after your Python, as you get more money, start building a "Snake" collection.

I'm liking the Python idea, a friend of mine recently acquired one and it's one of the nicest wheelguns I've ever seen. The M1A would be on the top of my list except for the fact that my dad has an awesome M1A collection so I can shoot his when I want to and will inherit them someday... I like all of the suggestions so far, obviously this was the right place to ask this question!

If you really want a rifle for long range shooting - research how to build-up a semi-custom rifle based on something like the Stevens 200. It's the savage 110 action - but doesn't acccept the accu-trigger. These are excellent barreled actions that shoot great out of the box. Can get one stripped down for $150-$200 in a lot of cases.

These are great to start with since they don't require a lot of work to the action to get 'em to lock up tight. That's money you can spend on other things like an upgraded stock, full bedding, free floating the barrel, an upgraded trigger, and a good scope.

When all is said and done if you do your homework, you can build an amazingly accurate semi-custom rifle for a very reasonable price. In the long run you end up with a lot more rifle for your money.

If I had an extra $2K, and was looking for a rifle - that's the route I would go.

I had a FiverseveN, but sold it (plus a few thousands rounds of various ammo). Just got bored with it...

If I were you, I'd consider a SA 1911-A1 TRP. That's on my short list. Close to the FBI contracted 1911? It's the most bang for the buck, many 1911 folks feel. Maybe $1,350 on Gunbroker.com...

Or, a good .300 Win mag (or bigger), with a really good scope. It's a blast to have a very accurate long rifle...

Hmmm, seems like a lot of people fork over big bucks for five-seven's and then turn around and sell them, myself included. So I guess I'm going to narrow it down to either another 1911 or a large rifle so I can shoot some distance (maybe out to 700-800 yards?).
So if I go with another 1911, should I buy a factory gun and then send it off for some tuning and a bobtail grip, or try to find one already set up? My biggest complaint with my Kimber is the point on the bottom/back of the grip, it's not particularly comfortable and it tends to make it noticeable without excessively loose clothing if I wear it inside my waistband. I'd like something with a bobtail grip, commander size, and night sights. What are my options as far as factory guns with those features?
