Default Question about handgun registration

Let's say that you found an old Walther in your attic, and you're pretty sure that your grandpa brought it home after WWII, but you can't prove it because he's dead and obviously there's no paperwork. Would there be any way to register it, or would the gun-grabbers just say "thank you for turning in this dangerous weapon, citizen. We'll go melt it down now."

Mandatory registration came into effect for all handgun transfers in 1991.

Generally, the attitude of the DOJ is they will look the other way if you were to voluntarily register it now. $19, you would probably use the vol'reg form, but you could also probably use the "operation of law" form that is normally used for intrafamilial transfers.

Another alternative is to simply keep it and not worry about it. If it is ever questioned, the gun has been in your possession since before 1991, right?
If it has NOT been in your attic since 1990, then that would not be legal.

Either way, they aren't going to take it and melt it down.

Handguns purchased prior to 1991 do not have to be registered.

As I said.... if it's been in his attic since before 1991, it's his, nothing needs to be done.
If not, then it was an illegal transfer and should be "made right".
