Personal gun for FFL owner
When you are an FFL, and buy a gun for yourself, not resale, do we need to do a DROS and 4473 on ourselves? Or do you just show it in your A&D book as comming in and stay in your name?
Thanks

You do not need to do a DROS for a long gun, you just need to put that it is for the owner's personal collection. For a handgun, you need to submit the DROS. You do not need to fill out a 4473 in either case as long as it is not a corporation:
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#d (D3) Does a dealer have to execute ATF Form 4473 to take a weapon out of the dealer’s inventory for his or her own use? [Back] No. However, the "bound book" must reflect the disposition of the firearm from business inventory to personal use. However, if the business is a corporation, and the firearm is being transferred to a corporate officer or director for other than business purposes, then a Form 4473 must be executed. [27 CFR 478.124 and 478.125a]

For federal stuff it's as above. My company is the FFL holder so any personal guns have to have a 4473 run, which I do on myself. If I was a sole proprietorship I would just sign them out as "personal use" or "personal collection".

I suspect that the same would be true for the DROS if it is a corporation since the person receiving the firearm would not really have a FFL personally.

That was the worst thing about becoming a corporation. As a partnership, I simply signed long guns out as 10/01/2009 Wesley Morris For Owner's Personal Collection. DONE! Handguns must still be DROSed, but the 10 day wait is waived.
Now, supposedly since I have a CFD number and even though my FFL is not in my name, supposedly I am ten day wait exempt still, but still must 4473 and DROS all guns. I am not sure if that is true or not and since I have to spend the $25 either way, I just wait ten days before I take them home. Since I am a corporate officer and can take the gun inventory out to test it or take it to gun shows, the ten day wait doesn't mean much. When I DROSed my Glock 35 as a corporation, I took it out and shot it, took it home and cleaned it, and then took it back to the shop the next day. All of the inventory still belongs to me, so if it is temporarily off the premises for lawful purposes, I still haven't delivered it to the customer. Anyway, Vinnie, you are good to go on long guns! Enjoy one of the best perks of having an FFL. No more DROS on long guns and no more wait on handguns!

Well, it used to be that if you transferred a firearm to yourself, you had to keep it from yourself for 15 days (the waiting period at the time due to mailing in the DROS).

Yep, since the business is a corporation, I fill out both a 4473 and a DROS on any gun I keep for myself as a corporate office (I'm president of something!!). The 10-day wait is meaningless as the firearm is in my possession at all times. And I do have to pay the $25 DROS fee. Not bad really.

I usually end up building up a whole arsenal of long guns before DROSing. Again, since they are in my inventory, I can just leave them at the gun shop and take them out of testing until I get enough long guns ready to take home and justify wasting that $25.
Handguns don't matter as they are $25 each anyway, plus all you really need are three handguns. Glock 35, Glock 23, and Glock 27.

With handguns you save $4 per each additional handgun on a DROS, but then you need to fill out the BATF form, which is a pain.
I could mention some handguns you missed, but I don't think I want to get into that. While I own two out of the three that you mentioned, as well as a G17, I am not a fan of combat tupperware :-).

Isn't there a bar button near the bottom that says "Add Handgun" or something like that? I've used it a few times. If you try to use it for regular dealer sales without having selected an exemption on the first page, it warns you that you are doing something illegal.

As stated, it is at the bottom of the page, BUT there is a problem with the DROS entry since if you have a person who is exempt (ie. C&R FFL & CA DOJ COE) and who is buying a modern handgun and an exempt handgun (ie. single action), the system does not allow you to enter the second one, so you would need to call and get them to correct the charges (been there, done that many times).
Just remember to send in the BATF multiple purchase form!!! A C&R FFL does not exempt the person from that requirement for non-C&Rs.
