Default 1945 Remington Model 81 / .300 Savage / $695 / Burbank/Los Angeles / Will not ship.

1945 Remington Model 81 "Woodmaster" Chambered in .300 Savage: $695.

Make: Remington Model 81

Model: "Woodmaster" Model 81 Semi-Automatic / Serial Number: 24975

Caliber: .300 Savage

Location (city or county): San Fernando Valley/Burbank/Simi Valley

Price: $695

Will ship (Y/N): NO.

============================

Year: This Particular rifle "codes" to a manufacture date of December 1945 (Code is X-PP).

The Remington 8 and early Remington 81s were not chambered in .300 Savage. The Remington 81 was only chambered in .300 Savage from 1940 - 1942 / then / 1945 - 1950. The .300 Savage was not introduced until 1940 and the Model 81s were only produced until 1942 when Remington then procured operations to the war effort. they resumed production in 1945 and continued until 1950.

Finish: Very clean rifle, and it appears that most of the wear had been from minor handling or storage over the years, rather than shot much. Nice original finish with minor fine scratches in various areas as shown in the photos, but no significant gauges or scrapes to the metal. Most important, there are no dings or dents in the barrel shroud as you often see on these guns. There are some little pock marks in an area under the barrel, but they are not dents. Various areas around the receiver have minor rubbing wear to the bluing at the high areas from general handling but no major bluing loss. While some areas exhibit a slight shade of patina, there is no rust or pitting to be found. It has the original rear sight and a period-correct Lyman front sight.

Stock: Very clean, nice original wood stock. There are some minor dings and general handling marks as shown in the photos, but no cracks, splits, or significant indentations. It has a period-correct Pachmayr rubber butt-stock pad added as shown (these have a good kick so it makes sense) and Lyman front sight - all else is all original. .300 Savage is a powerful cartridge that is still rather easy to get (compared to the .35 Remington, .32 Remington, and a scant few in .25 Remington, you most often see these chambered in.

Barrel / Bore: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep. There is no erosion or pitting. This rifle appears to have suffered most of its finish-wear in being handled and stored, rather than shot.

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Remington Arms Co. Inc., Ilion, N.Y., Made In U.S.A. / Browning’s Patents 659,507-659,786-701,288-984,263”. The underside of the receiver is marked with three inspection marks, and the front and rear of the magazine/trigger guard assembly are marked with an inspection mark each. The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked “X PP” indicating month and year of manufacture. The left side of the receiver is marked “The / Woodsmaster / Trade Mark / Model 81” and “Remington / Reg. U.S. Pat. Ofc.” and “24975”. The left rear of the trigger guard is marked “3”. The right side of the receiver at the front of the bolt is marked “300 / SAV”.

The Remington Model 81 was introduced in 1936, as yet another John Moses Browning innovation, descending from the Remington Model 8 (1906) before it. It was the first successful high-powered semiauto rifle made in the United States, and the world over. It features a rotating bolt with dual lugs that lock into the rear portion of the barrel.

When the gun is fired, the barrel, bolt and bolt-carrier assembly recoil all at once, allowing the bullet to exit the barrel before the mechanism unlocks. During this operation, a couple of heavy springs inside the shroud surrounding the barrel are compressed. When the bolt travels back to its limit, the springs force the barrel forward, unlocking the bolt from the rear extension. After the barrel completes its full travel, it releases the barrel lock and allows the bolt-carrier to strip a round from the magazine.

Note, that while the magazine appears as it if detaches, this is a fixed magazine with a 5 round capacity.

The rifle is a "takedown' design, meaning that the barrel and receiver are easily separated with no tools, allowing for a smaller package for transport.

Interesting historical notes are that the Federal Bureau of Investigation acquired Model 81 rifles in response to the 1933 Kansas City Massacre, and as most people also know, famed Texas Ranger Frank Hamer used its predecessor, a customized Remington Model 8 with a special-order and custom 20-round detachable magazine to take down Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker.
