Default Costco 42" Tool Chest $500

Saw this at my local (Richmond) Costco tonight. I think it might be time to retire my cheap tool chest and upgrade. Seems like a very solid chest and pretty good value. It appears to be 2-3 times heavier than the cheap Sears one I currently own. Anyone with a Kirkland tool chest feel free to chime in.

Hate to say it but I would rather go with the Harbor Freight 44" or HF44 (#68784) and the top chest for that price range.

Those things are getting good reviews in that price range.(garage journal)
I plan on getting one removing the casters and building a nice new metal work bench around it.

I have the casters off mine. Have a small roller for when I really need it. I haven't seen the Kirkland in person but I don't like the drawer arrangement.

It looks like this one was on sale back in 2014 and advertised on slickdeals. The 3rd user comment does a pretty good job of describing the unit and compares it to the HF chest.

I own this chest, it's really well built. I looked at the HF units and they are not as well constructed as this one. I love the locked cubby, it's good for storing powder, primers, and completed ammo as well. I just wish the top and bottom chests were keyed the same.

I was bummed at the cheaper price recently when I saw it at my local Costco. But then again, maybe I need a second one!

This thread has inspired me to check one out if they have it at my local Costco. I still would never buy one though, the color/texture and drawers are deal killers for me.

My only problem with them is there BLACK, & seeing all those little tools in some of those places is going to bee a bit harder, than say Red.

That said you coulds put lights in some of those areas to help.

For the kind of money nothing beats the harbor freight 44" 13 drawer red tool chest ($349)

you literaly need to move up to a $1k or $2k box (matco/snap-on/crownell) to get something better.

http://www.harborfreight.com/44-in-1...fQ%3D%3D%0D%0A

Keep an eye out for coupons this can be bought for $349

Default Costco 42" Tool Chest $500

I own the 44" harbor freight one and have contemplated a second one. However, it doesn't hold a candle to the stainless one with the butcher block top at Costco or the black one. Bang for the buck? Absolutely. But drawer slides and thickness of materials are definitely better on the other two.

i have two of the butcher block toolchests and the one in the first post in my garage.

these are far better than anything from harbor freight.

I prefer the black wrinkle finish. It looks good next to my custom painted black hammer-finish cabinets. The Costco 4' LED shop light above it does a perfect job of lighting the full length pull-out drawers. The top compartment is the best for storing all my reloading press hardware.

I have this Milwaukee one, if you need bigger drawers. It's mobile w/wheel locks, has a nice rubber surface pad, easy-close sliding drawers, and a power strip. It's a Home Depot item.....also has a matching top chest if you need more drawers. I think retail is $399....get the 10% coupon for a better deal at $360.

If I didn't have a tool box I would be all over this. I have checked them out at Costco and they seems well built.

I've had the earlier version of this model (red crinkle finish, ball bearing sliders, same drawer layout) since 2001 and been very happy with it. I still roll it around once in a while. I've also had the hydraulic pump for my BendPak car lift mounted to this chest (in place of a pull handle), and it's stood up to the weight and vibrations just fine.

I've also got one of the low-end Harbor rollers, and I'm not a Harbor Tool snob, but...HF's highest-end model might start to compare, but I wouldn't buy it...Costco has lifetime returns for any reason on something like this.

I bought one last year and know two other people with this chest. we're all very, very happy with it, drawers are solid, roll smoother and have higher weight capacity than my craftsmen roller. Even comes with the mats, it annoyed me to have to buy it separately for the craftsmen version.

I had no problem buying it at full price and at the sale price it's a fantastic deal

That thing is sweet!

So is the stainless one vacman posted. It's assembled next to the one on sale at the store and is a beauty. If it were on sale too I might have a difficult choice to make.

It appears that the people who own one (or are familiar with it) really like it. I guess it is time to upgrade. I do like the HF one and if I was a mechanic I might prefer it. But I'm a reloader and a handyman and the Costco's layout looks like a good fit for my needs.

The drawers on the harbor freight boxes are a bit flimsy. Are lower end pro boxes (IE snap on, matco, etc) the same? When I say lower end pro boxes, I do not mean like costco or craftsman type boxes, but actual pro tool boxes.

If you can wait a bit, the butcher block one has been on sale twice that I've seen in the last year or so. $339 in the store. That puts it squarely into Harbor Freight pricing and it's much, much nicer. So much so that I've thought about selling my Harbor Freight one at a loss to buy 2 Costco units.

Thanks vacman, I'll going to pull the trigger on this one and maybe I'll add the stainless one too in a few months when it goes one sale.

You will NOT be disappointed. I have had this box now for just over a year and love it. VERY sturdy, well build and I love that all the drawers have a finger latch you have to push before the drawers can be opened.....keeps the 3 year old out of them...for now.

The sale runs through 4/4 if I recall correctly. I will confirm that today when I go back to Costco and give it a final test drive. I hope the stainless one doesn't go one sale soon because I just saw the Vepr 12 group buy thread here and I might have to get in on that

I've never been very impressed with this toolbox whenever I mess with it in stores. The drawers seem flimsy.
HF will be my next box, you get a lot for the price.

I have two of these and love them. Replaced a newer pos craftsman unit. For the size and quality I don't think the 499 price can be beat. This is much larger and only a little more $ compared to the hf ones people are mentioning. Plenty fine for high end home user. Imho of course.

It's not flimsy at all. HF are easily less quality because I took mine back in favor of the Costco one. I have over 50lbs so far in this drawer and it actually glides better, doesn't bow or flex.

It's freaking solid.

When i was in the market for a tool chest, i went to test out benches from lowes, home depot, sears, and i have to say, the Harbor Freight ones are an amazing value and Quality!

Another added bonus with Costco.. If you ever have any problems with it and are not "Satisfied," just lug it down there for a refund or exchange. I'm not satisfied with my coffee pot approximately every 2 years. Just got my free replacement as a matter of fact! The new model..

Pretty shameful. I wouldn't be bragging.

Costco's guarantee is what keeps me going there, and the fact that they take care of their customers. If somethings not right they make it right. I'm exaggerating the coffee pot, but yes if I pay $150 for a Keurig, I'm not going to be satisfied if it breaks 2 years down the road, it's not a $20 coffee pot from walmart
