72 rounds per gun is what OCSD requires. Most trainers are going to be around $100 for a renewal, give or take a few bucks.

I took my renewal course at On Target in Laguna Niguel. I'm a member there. The classroom lecture and discussion were pretty much standard content. We ended up watching a 45 minute video on why you shouldn't speak to a police officer.
The video could have been way, way, way shorter. Fee was $120. David, the instructor is a nice guy with some good insight. Would I do it again here? Maybe..... Here's why: I came in to the Sunday afternoon class specifically because I simply do not have much free time. They advertised this is a 4-hour lecture/qualification course. I figured perfect, I could do this whole thing in one Sunday. The class started at 3pm. Range goes cold at 7pm. Well, guess what. We didn't end the lecture until almost 7pm. So, I couldn't qualify the same day. I ended up coming back another day to shoot. Realistically, this is not the end of the world for me. But, if you are going to advertise something, make sure you have your time/scheduling right. Not the end of the world, and I'm still a member, and will continue to be a member of OT. Just a heads up to anyone that take it here, YMMV |

Allsafe
Took my renewal w/ Allsafe @ the F3 range in Stanton.
I had heard that he was a bit tighter in the shooting requirements - and you moved around to simulate cover positions. Went smoothly - I liked the drills - much better (for me) than standing in one position for all the shots. I was not used to that and I brought three guns to qual on, and passed two, failed one. He was nice enough to let me try again - and I passed this time around. The older gentleman next to me I don't think passed a single gun. he was all over the place. |

FT3 one day CCW course
I'm posting a question for a friend of mine:
Has anyone taken the FT3 one day CCW course? The price is $125 plus range fees. Are the classes taught by TJ Johnston or Dave Anderson? Please share your experience. Thanks, Tanner |

It seems we are getting a few comments about CCW training that includes course material that is simply not relevant to CCW training. It's nice if there are some classes with some extra material being covered, but it's not part of the required process.

Sure the drills have application to the CCW carrier. You shoot from cover, move and shoot, etc. How can that not be applicable or beneficial? No one is saying that you don't have to continue to train or take classes, but his classes offer those things for the same price as other trainers who just have you punch holes in power. All trainers charge about the same, give or take a few bucks. All trainers submit their syllabi to OCSD for approval. If the trainers happen to be providing more than the minimum required, that's fine with OCSD. Applicants can certainly be informed consumers and ask a trainer for the course syllabus ahead of time if they'd like.

That's interesting. He teaches a rifle class so he knows what a bullet button is. Regardless, folks have been pleased with his CCW course and that's what this thread is about.

(d) Except as provided in subdivision (b), it shall be unlawful for any person, with reckless disregard for the safety of another, to discharge, or attempt to discharge, a firearm in a school zone, as defined in paragraph (1) of subdivision (e). The prohibition contained in this subdivision does not apply to the discharge of a firearm to the extent that the conditions of paragraph (1) of subdivision (c) are satisfied. (e) As used in this section, the following definitions shall apply: (1) "Concealed firearm" has the same meaning as that term is given in Sections 25400 and 25610. (iii) If the firearm is any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person and the offense is punished as a felony pursuant to Section 25400. (B) By imprisonment in a county jail for not more than one year or by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170 for two, three, or five years, in all cases other than those specified in subparagraph (A). (4) The court shall apply the three-month minimum sentence specified in this subdivision, except in unusual cases where the interests of justice would best be served by granting probation or suspending the execution or imposition of sentence without the minimum imprisonment required in this subdivision or by granting probation or suspending the execution or imposition of sentence with conditions other than those set forth in this subdivision, in which case the court shall specify on the record and shall enter on the minutes the circumstances indicating that the interests of justice would best be served by this disposition. A muzzle-loader firearm shall be deemed to be loaded when it is capped or primed and has a powder charge and ball or shot in the barrel or cylinder. (k) This section does not require that notice be posted regarding the proscribed conduct. (l) This section does not apply to a duly appointed peace officer as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, a full-time paid peace officer of another state or the federal government who is carrying out official duties while in California, any person summoned by any of these officers to assist in making arrests or preserving the peace while he or she is actually engaged in assisting the officer, a member of the military forces of this state or of the United States who is engaged in the performance of his or her duties, or an armored vehicle guard, engaged in the performance of his or her duties, as defined in subdivision (d) of Section 7582.1 of the Business and Professions Code. I just finished a sunday morning renewal course at FAST OC with Mike Beard. There were only two students in the class in a casual atmosphere. We covered mostly a refresher of legal issues, situational awareness and Q&A. Then we headed over to Evans range and shot the 72 rnd 3-5-7 qualifier with each pistol. Cost was $90 for the class including all 3 pistols. I highly recommend it.

Feel compelled to add a positive comment for Ben Hansen. Took the entire CCW class in one day. Yes, it was a long day...but Ben chopped it up into segments with some class time, some out door time, and range time at the end of the day. Also provided all with Blackhawk holster and practice pistol.
Ben has been great with follow up assistance as well. Assisted (for a fair price) with fingerprint cards for AZ CCW. Just qualified this weekend for pistol number 3 for only $20.00. I believe this is a very fair price. Hansen Firearms Training. http://www.benhansen.com/firearms-training.html |

Can someone recommend and give a link to a good CCW refresher instruction program in Orange County ? The training that you need to submit when you RENEW your CCW. Preferably someone who does it at FT3 Tactical or failing that, Evans.

Did my renewal with Mike at FAST OC. Compared to my last class where it was like 50 people packed into a small room at Evans this was a nice mellow class with just 5 or 6 people. After the class session we went over to Evans to shoot the quals. Mike was nice and sent over pics of your qualification targets a few days later. That was a nice unexpected touch.
The instruction was interesting (ppt, handouts, and live demonstrations) and the instructor has a good personality for teaching. I didn't exactly agree with everything he said but then again I had the same issue with the last four CCW classes I attended. It seems to be a common issue in the reviews of these courses. Perhaps next time I will finally get to try TJ's class. That said, I am happy that the OC instructor list is so large now and there are plenty of choices. |

Just finished my CCW training with Greg Block. Simple and effective. If you are new to firearms, I don't think I would advise it. But if you know what guns are and know how to shoot, it is a good class. Mostly focuses on the legal issues of carrying. I learned a lot.

Just finished the initial CCW course with Trent at F.A.S.T. O.C. and I am more than impressed...
First, I chose this course because of some other comments on this thread. Glad I did. Trent is an excellent instructor that keeps the class fun and interesting regardless of skill level. I had a fair amount of firearms experience from the military, but you can always learn more. Trent's experience level as well as teaching abilities are top notch. The shooting portion was more defensive scenario based than "stand and shoot the paper". Again focus points and stress levels are kept relative to the skill level of the shooter. A beginner will do just fine, and an advanced shooter will have a great time. The training was very comprehensive as far as laws, scenario discussions, weapon and ammunition choices (had you not already made that decision), concealment clothing and holster choices...we were never rushed to get out of the classroom at the end of a day, no topic was only touched upon lightly. Overall well worth the price paid. I shot a Glock 22, Sig P239, and S&W Shield. Qualified with all three. As an aside about F.A.S.T. O.C. another instructor Lance is one of the RSOs at the Prado IDPA matches and runs the Handgun Challenges that are put on at FT3 and Evans. Nice guy and also well versed in this stuff. Worth speaking to if you are on the fence about training with these guys.

Just completed a 1 day course at Hansen Firearm Training. Very long day, but worth it. If you're doing the multi state one, class starts at 0800, otherwise 0900 in Orange. Live fire is at Evans Range in Orange from 1800-2000.
I brought my lunch and dinner since time is crucial. About 40 minutes for lunch, I ate dinner at the classroom during break before going to Evans. No dinner break. Lot of information. Being retired LEO and NRA RSO, I experienced the law portion before. But as always, you learn something new all the time. Ben is a good instructor with plenty of info. He also teaches other advance classes as well. The class was very small, 4 for the multi and then 3 for the OC CCW. Price was $160 and to me, worth it! |
