"Rifle" for my 4 year old
My daughter is 4 1/2 but as tall as some 6 year olds. After seeing the movie "Brave", she showed interest in archery. We have gotten her a couple bows, and she really likes it, but gets frustrated by the fact that the bows are garbage. They are barely usable... in fact, they aren't usable, so I got to thinking that a rifle would be much easier to learn basic marksmanship skills.
So, I'm not picky about much except I'm hoping to find something that fits her better than the smallest model Daisy BB gun (28" overall), which I have from my childhood and something that is accurate enough to hit cans at 5 yards (obviously the more accurate, the better). I thought airsoft would be a good option, but I didn't find any "kid size" airsoft rifles... just replicas of adult size guns. So, I guess that leaves BB or pellet? .177 or .22 is fine and I don't care if it's electric, spring, pump, or CO2. Single shot or magazine is ok too. I just want to get her looking down the sites and hitting targets to keep her interest in marksmanship. Sooooo... what about the Crosman 1377 w/ the stock? Does anybody know what the overall length is on it? Any other suggestions are welcome! TIA, Billy |

I got my son (and soon to be my daughters, as he's moved up) one of these:
http://www.henryrifles.com/rifles/mini-bolt-youth/ It's pretty small. But probably a little big for a four year old. My daughter is 7 and ready to go. Our local range is 8+ . I tell her we can go, and say she's 8, but she refuses to lie. I must be doing something right!!

I'd recommend this Daisy over the Red Ryder 1) much much lighter trigger 2) waaaay accurate 3) nice aperture sight system and 4) easier to cock than the Red Ryder, your child can do it, my 6 yo can't cock the Red Ryder.
check out the comparison accuracy Red Ryder - prone Daisy Avanti 499 - sitting My airguns, a Beeman R8 is missing from the pic |

You might want to consider an electric or an easy cocking spring BB/airsoft gun, as for airguns that will shot .177 or .22 those will need close supervision if you will let her shoot those at such an early age.
You could also let her have toy guns for offrange time too, like nerf or suction dart guns just to keep her focused. Toy (or kid's versions) of crossbows are also an idea, and they have similar handling properties of rifles and are generally easy to cock and can fire anything from real arrows (again, with close supervision), to harmless suction cup darts.

I started my son with a Daisy Buck when he was 5. It's smaller and lighter than a Red Ryder. He could shoulder an manipulate it all by himself. Targets were reactive (pop cans, army men, anything that would move or fall over when shot and not ricochet.
It's also more of a "real gun" than airsoft and requires treating it like a firearm and not a toy. At 7 I upgraded him to a Savage Rascal. Fantastic rifle. He's a great shot now with decent trigger skills. Don't worry about precision from a 4 year old. Let her have fun with reactives and instill a love for shooting. Let precision come later.

1377 stocks are easily shortened.

I say keep her on archery if she has the passion. You can shoot at hay in the backyard and the odds of it ever being banned are much less than guns. You can also get her a bb gun and only be in the hole $300 for both. Sling shot would be cool too.
I saw a video not to long ago about making a bow out of pvc. The draw weight was anywhere from 20 up to 80lbs. Build one with her and paint it pink, wadda bing wadda bomb. |

If you want to shoot in the back yard you are going to have to go with a air rifle or bow. For a bow might have to start with a long bow or recurve vs a compound. I'd go to a local bow shop and have her fitted for one. Just my two cents.
