Default New fresh water gear suggestions?

All my rods, gears, etc are really old, so I gave it to my best friend so he can take his kids and learn. So I would like new gear, any suggestions for fresh water?

I mostly fish for Trout and I am just a causal fisherman, and would like to take my future wife soon too.

I love my 9' Phenix rod.
Long rod makes for easy casting of small trout tubes or Power worms with split shot
I have a Shimano Stradic Ci4 reel on it, which is ok.
I have the Sedona too that works as well for a fraction of the cost.
Turners also sells their own brand of rod that is supposed to made with Phenix blanks that are cheaper too

Shimano has one of the best drags.
You don't need expensive gear for trout.

I suggest Bass Pro Shop / Cabela's brand for economical gear of decent quality. I agree you don't need a $500 outfit for trout. I also think a 9' rod is a little unwieldy. I suggest 6'-6" to 7' light weight (6 - 8# line), fast action rod.

I just got back to fishing (fresh water) a few months ago after a 20 year hiatus. I realized my old fishing gear from the early late 80s early 90s was outdated. I went to BassPro and tried the 1000 series reels that was on display, and I was amazed at how much technology has changed in 20 years (no freeplay, smooth cranking, smoother drag, micro drag adjustment, etc.) I decided on the Shimano Sahara 1000 and Shimano Sedona 1000->which my wife loves. I got the Okuma GSP 7' UL rod and Okuma Celilo 7'6' UL. If you're on a budget BassPro has rod/reel combos at a decent price.

Okuma
Phoenix
Fenwick
All good stuff.
Line diameter is a big factor in crystal clear Trout streams . I like the Spyder wire xxx mono 6 or 4 lb test.

Even the little 500 series are great.
I don't think they make them anymore but you can find them on Ebay.
Nice and light if you like to hike into the streams and lakes

Cheap shimano and an ugly stick. Get a 5-7’ rod. Since you’re not fat now you can hike streams where the long rod is prohibitive.

Bass Pro Combo or an Ugly Stick with a decent reel would be great for casual trout fishing.

I am a fan of rear drags for trout and bank fishing. Put the rod in the holder, with drag at the lowest setting. Then pick it up when it starts singing.

Spool drags for maintenance. Use a bobber on a clip hanging from a loop of line between the eyes as a strike indicator.

Personally I find bait fishing boring unless the bait is actively being worked, ie power mouse style or bubble/fly style. Even stockers are aggressive, take advantage of that.

FP,

Where will you be fishing? Lake (i.e. Irvine, SARLs) or streams and rivers (Kern)?

I recommend a 5 to 6 foot rod with spinning reel.

Check out Turners (LB). They have decent stuff.

Bank or boat?
River, stream or lake?

What does a day trout fishing look like to you?
Lazy and reclined?
Active and attentive?

There’s a buncha ways to catch trout. What kinda day do you want?

You can get some pretty high quality from a combo these days. Look online, often you will find a one off combo for $150 that includes a $99 reel and $99 rod. Shimano slx/nasci comes to mind.

In the middle, something like a pflueger president combo is great. On the lower end, An ugly stick combo will serve you well - tremendous value at that price point.

You can get an amazing setup for $200 these days if you find the right rod and reel separately for $100 each. $200 seems to be the price point where quality really steps up. Most of the bigger names have options in that range. Shimano, Abu Garcia, Lews, Pflueger, St. Croix, Fenwick, Daiwa, Phenix, Dobyns. All good.

All around setup, I’d look for a medium light. Maybe light or even ultralight if you are mostly throwing lures and light stuff. But the ML will give you more options, especially for throwing heavier sinkers with bait.

Of course, quality and price goes steeply up from there.

If you give more details, can suggest specifics. Go get ‘em!

Go to a big tackle store (Bass pro) Find what you like.. Jot down the make & model of the rod & reel(s)...then go to e-bay and don't be in a hurry. They will come up. I've bought all my high end stuff there for many years...Saved thousands. Also, there's nothing wrong with quality old gear if its in good shape. My trout stuff is all 1980s vintage shimano stuff. Works excellent.
