Mike,
Stay up late some night (11pm-12am) and join the night owl trivia contest. Takes a while as they go through the list of participants, but sometimes it's as informative as it is fun. |

Personally, I'd spend a little bit more for a Yaesu FT-60R, but then that's what I already have and I'm used to it.
See the following reviews and make up your own mind. http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php...Wouxun-KG-UV6D http://brianeisenhauer.com/ham-radio...g-uv6d-review/ |

I've had a chance this week to use a pair of the kg-uv6x models while visiting Colorado and I like them. They are comparatively simple radios next to my Yaesu vx-6r. I used the programming cable from my kg-uv1d to program them, and it worked well. The Wouxun software is clunky but has a decent online help system, the fee Commander software is better but lacks the help feature. The 6x model I was using does have the standard SMA connector rather than the reverse-SMA of my uv1d model. Audio on both is quite good.
The thing to be careful of is to not wander out of your authorized frequencies. It is quite easy to use the same freq as the local Sheriff or airport. On the flip side, using the FRS/GMRS frequencies is quite easy to do as well. Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk 2 |

Welcome to Radio Preppers
I'm a prepper who wants to add communications to their preps and appreciates the great resource Ham is. I came across the below website tonight:
"Information is a vital commodity in a disaster situation. Whomever has any, in the absence of Internet, phone and power services will have a great advantage. Radio Preppers aims to provide individuals interested in disaster preparedness with an independent tool for the exchange of information about emergency radio communications and preparations. Hopefully it will also help build a community of like-minded individuals who could contact and help each others in times of what is commonly known as “SHTF” or “TEOTWAWKI.” Like-minded here means self-sufficient, strong-willed and responsible people. Independent means regardless of nationality, race, gender, political and religious beliefs, as well as unrelated to any organizations. Whether you are a licensed HAM operator, CBer, or simply curious about radio preparedness doesn't matter here. My motivation for creating this site came from my inability to find an emergency radio club that really wasn't related to some kind of organization, mostly governmental or politically affiliated. Survival is a personal, family or small community affair. I am always suspicious of organizations that plan on telling people what to do for their own good, or else." http://radiopreppers.com/index.php/topic,2.0.html |

Before you get yelled at, HAM is a meat, and was originally used to look down on amateur radio operators.

The proper response is that "ham" or "Ham" is a meat; HAM is an acronym of sorts for High-Frequency AMateur Radio. Last edited by BillCA; 09-03-2012 at 8:50 AM.. |

Free Ham radio CLASS not a Ham cram in Marin county. Starts Sept. 30, 2012
If there is anyone that is thinking about getting their Ham License, my Amateur Radio club is having a free class for technicians license. This is not a ham cram. It is on 6 Sundays starting on Sept 30. The class is also open to people who took a ham cram and walked out with a license but knew as little after the test as when they went in to take the test. Ham crams have their place but it teach you nothing except the answers to the test. There is no charge for the class. You will need to buy the study book from the club or someplace like HRO. I think this is the book but will check if anyone is interested.
http://www.arrl.org/shop/ham-radio-l...d-2nd-edition/ If You have a friend that is not a member of Calguns but might be interested in amateur radio, let them know about he class.

having a fixed and mobil radio set up is good, but if the stuff hits that hard a permit from the government is no good. and anybody can and will transmit and receive..if they know how.
maybe even use the list from the fcc to come to you place and take your radios. yes i have the governments permission to transmit on a ham radio. so i am on that list. as well as many others. .

Also wanted to note, for those who listen in on gov frequencies, there's a good listing of online streaming scanner feeds at radioreference.com. These are feeds from volunteers who stream scanner frequencies over internet. The one for Alameda County's agencies is: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?ctid=183

So my license was about to expire, and that got me thinking of picking up another radio. I picked up the Yaesu FT-60 from the suggestion of the guy at HRO and a book to study for my general class license. I haven't had a radio in 10 to 15 years, so there seems to be a few new things going on. Echo link is something I've never heard of before, and a few new acronyms I need to learn.
Since I've only ever owned hand helds I still consider myself a beginner. But once I upgrade my license I hope to change that. One question I have, is if I want to change my call sign from KD6*** to N6*** will I be able to keep the same three letters? Or is it like getting a personal license plate? |

Here's a list of 6 calls expiring soon: http://www.qrz.com/i/expired/soon_6.txt but a license goes into a holding period for 2 years before it becomes available to the general public. Expired calls within the 2 years grace period are only available to people who previously had that call or close family members. Here's a link to a site which says that it can show all callsign availability and you can search it. http://www.radioqth.net/vanity/Avail...spx?option=P13 Choose 1x3 Prefix N District 6 and choose order by suffix. |

A couple of weeks ago my daughter and I were talking about the great 2012 power outage and the ability to communicate if power had remained out for much longer . . . For what ever reason she went shopping on Amazon and a BaoFeng UV-5R+ radio, the 144/430 whip antenna, programming cable and disk all showed up.
I guess I'm going to have to hook up with a few people to figure out how to use it and get a license.

Jim, for a no-morse-code Technician license, which is easiest, go to www.QRZ.com. Under the resources menu, they have practice ham radio tests for each category. You can run through the various tests until you're comfortable enough to take the exam. Very helpful. Then it's just a matter of finding a date to test so you can get your license. Once you do all that, buy another radio. Remember they work best in pairs. Especially if you want to be able to communicate to family members away from the house. Allocate a few bucks for a Repeater Directory book so you can use the repeaters in your local area to extend your range. |

Well Christmas came a couple days early this year and Santa just got me a FT-60R. I don't have my license yet so I've only been able to listen in but I'm looking forward to getting all this stuff figured out. I picked up a used study book on amazon and hope to have my technician license here shortly.

Study guides (books): https://ssl.qrz.com/bookstore Having the same radio, some thoughts on listening... You can find a list of repeaters for California (and elsewhere) at: http://www.artscipub.com/repeaters/s...ate=California Use the search feature to find your city or cities in your area. Your FT-60R can also act as a scanner. If you want to listen to municipal radio traffic (police, fire, public works) go to: http://www.radioreference.com As you find frequencies you want to listen to or use, either write them down on paper or put them into a spreadsheet (like Excel) so you can keep track of them. Later, you'll want to organize those frequencies on your radio. Having them on a list or spreadsheet (even a text document) will be a big help. For example, on my radio, the memory channels are set up roughly like this; 01-50 : 2 meter frequencies 51-100 : 70cm (440MHz) frequencies 101-150: ARES, RACES and other special frequencies 150-200: Local Police/Fire/EMS for monitoring 201-220: Air traffic frequencies (I'm near an airport) 221-240: Rail, public utilities, bus service 241-259: 900 MHz monitoring 260-300: Reserved for traveling out of town/road trips For 2M and 70cm, the first two channels are the primary Simplex (no repeater) "Call" frequency and an alternate frequency with no local repeater. This allows point-to-point talk with another local HAM without a repeater. I keep my local PD/FD and EMS programmed. Hear lots of sirens? Tune in to find out what's going on and/or where. Cheers and 73's |

For those with the FT60, or any Yaesu radio, I recommend the FTB-series of software for memory management. http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/
I get my cables from Kawamall (they have both dedicated web and ebay stores.) |

I'm a big proponent of getting a mobile first. Then getting an HT. I started out this way: Yaesu FT-7800 (for the first 8 mos I took this in an out of the truck on a daily basis) Diamond 2m/70cm mag-mount (stuck it on a piece of particle board with foil on it) Radio Shack Power Supply (I forget the size, 15-20Amp?) Then I got an FT-60 and accessories Then I added a nice Diamond X50-NA base Then a used Alinco 2m/70cm mobile that I use at the house. There was a couple of GE MVS radios for APRS in there as well My last addition was about 2 years ago and it was an FT-857 that I really got for doing roving in VHF contests. Not a big HF person. Unless you only plan to use an HT for repeaters, or very close simplex, they suck. But generally if you're in CA, you can probably hit about many repeaters easily. |

This might be slightly spammy here, but what's life you don't wrinkle some feathers...
If you REALLY want to see what you can do on VHF/UHF this is weekend (1/19-1/20) is a great time to find out. It's the ARRL January VHF contest. Even if you only have an HT, turn it on. The contest is for 6M and higher. This year adds a new FM-only category (6M-4460MHz) so it's a great one for the new guys out there who only have FM. Here's the info from the ARRL http://www.arrl.org/january-vhf You will need to know your grid square. http://f6fvy.free.fr/qthLocator/fullScreen.php Hop on the bands and give it a try. If you need any help you can respond here, PM or email me. I'll be a rover in Central California (DM07/6 & CM96/7) on Saturday (Above Prather, CA then over to Meadow Lakes and down to Madera). On Sunday I'll be heading down to Kettleman City (DM06/5 & CM95/6). You can always just "give points" if you don't want to worry about it too much. It's not too difficult. Just log (there's a paper one on the ARRL site) the time (UTC), their call (put a /R after the call if you work a Rover), your grid and their grid. You can work each station once per band. Now, if you work a Rover, you can work them again if they move into a new grid. FM Frequencies: 52.525 146.55 223.5 446.00 Do not use 146.52! |
