I really hate to see Cylinder and Slide close up shop, but I do wish Bill the best in retirement.

I took Bill's 1911 Build Class almost 20 years ago, and one of my most treasured 1911's is the one built in that class. Bill is an awesome gunsmith and also a pretty good teacher.

But he showed his Army roots in the class. At one point he kept speaking of the "Port" side of the pistol while pointing with his finger. I had to speak up, and said "Bill - That's the starboard side of the pistol that you're pointing at..." The look on his face was kinda priceless and the class got a good crack-up.

I met him a couple of times at various matches long ago. I know he cared about the quality of his products. Still have some stuff laying around I bought from him. I wanted to take his 1911 class but it never worked out. Great that you got to do that!

Think he was referring to the ejection "port" side of the slide?

Back when I bought my first boat, a friend gave me a helpful way to remember the difference between port, starboard, fore and aft.

Port has 4 letters, as does Left.

Fore think of forward.

the rest falls in place.

You can go back to the front but you can't go aft to the bow.

Once the Captain's into his third bottle of port it all goes wonky.

No, it refers to the days of sailing ships, where wind power was the preferred method of propulsion. If the wind is blowing you forward, would you want to stand at the back of the boat, with the wind in your face to do your business? Or would you want to be at the front, where the wind is blowing your stuff away? I'd rather be at the head, or front of the boat, thank you very much!
