Hi, I'm a woman from California, who is also disabled and in a wheelchair. I live alone, and I am feeling very vulnerable in my home. I'm looking for a way to stop feeling like a sitting duck. I don't know much about guns, so I'm here to learn if maybe having one is the solution I'm seeking. I"m really a blank slate here, so I guess my first question would be: With the proper training and everything. Is there a gun someone like me could use effectively?

There are plenty of training classes that would help you learn to shoot effectively and what type of gun you handle the best.

I suggest you create a new thread by itself under the “general gun discussions” section.

Let us know your general location for trainers in your area.

A .22 handgun may not be powerful, but is easy to handle and keeps you from being helpless.

Higher calibers such as 9mm would be better if you can handle them.

If you intend to carry a gun outside your home, mention that and read our concealed carry forum.

In the meantime, pepper spray is cheap and better than nothing.

Good advice.
