USAR Direct Commission into a Basic Branch (ie - Combat Support Branch) is indeed available from civilian life.

I was prior-service (non-Army) but had long since been discharged from the IRR. So I was considered civilian. At BOLC, we also had two DCO's who were non-prior service who went through the 6-week Direct Commission Course at Benning before coming to BOLC.

It's my understanding that the Basic Branch Direct Commission Board is intermittent and the requirements often change, including the ability to direct commission from civilian.

I suppose that makes sense if they are looking for people with specialized training or specific degrees. I'm sure this is an area of need as well. At least they did not go with the Brit-style recruiting posters!

If you look, Regular Guy first started this thread in September-2013, and he's in the MEDICAL FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about active duty, but Cyber makes up 0.175% of ALL RESERVE OFFICER vacancies. Medical makes up 40%. With that in mind follow Regular Guy's adventures through his posts and remember he was chasing one of the 4 out of 10 vacancies not 0.175 out of 100.

If one's dream is to chase the Cyber vacancies in the Army Reserves it would literally be quicker to get in the USAR as ANY commission source (ROTC, OCS, etc.....) then Branch transfer once you are a 1st LT.
