Camcorders: Great diagnostic tools!
Camcorders are a great tool for all shooters as a diagnostic aid. Whether you are a novice or advanced shooter, watching yourself perform any athletic or performance related task is an eye opening experience.
As you may know, we post videos of many of our students. The typical immediate feedback we receive is that the students' perceived speed while they were doing the drills is not commensurate with the actual speed of the particular recorded drill. Needless to say, our Handgun 1 classes focus on fundamentals and students are encouraged to work on fundamentals...not speed for the sake of speed when fundamentals are not yet in place. However, it is an interesting observation as novice shooters do not yet have a gauge of speed since they are new to shooting and the various drills. Students also clearly see the aspects of their shooting that need to be worked on once we have a follow-up conversation with them. We also post notes on the videos as a long term reminder of that which the student may need to improve. Most of the time, there are very minor fixes that will help the shooter excel. If you are an advanced shooter with proper embedded fundamentals (and safe), next time you go to the range, take your camcorder with you and safely videotape yourself or have someone do it for you. You'll be amazed at what you'l find despite your experience! LEARN TO SHOOT...THEN SHOOT TO LEARN.
