Default Salmon - Soquel Hole - Sunday

51/57 area (east side of hole). 90-130 down. Got 3, biggest about 10#. Left the devil fish for next time. 2 on UV FBR and one on blue dancer.

Late start as I had to troubleshoot an electrical gremlin. Bad circuit breaker. 12v until there's a slight load, then 2v.

No Pajaro this wknd. Neighbor boat did good there last wknd.

Was supposed to puff up big in the afternoon, so stayed relatively close to home.

I hear Moss area was kinda slow.

Our bites all came in 260-300' of water near the drop off into soquel canyon.

Port San Luis fish counts seems to be claiming more fish than actually caught down here. Mostly small, 10lbs. Interesting it’s small fish up and down the coast.

The one to fill the limit.

Did see an Orca though. Haven't seen one in a decade or more. Also a couple whales which aren't uncommon.

Interesting to hear about the breaker issue. Sounds like a resistance failure. Perhaps corrosion from the salt environment.

Bad/high resistance internal connection on breaker I'm sure. Had similar effect on one of those 3M splices (hate them things) years ago. Voltage until there's a load. Living in salt has it's drawbacks.

This season is going to be interesting, I don’t think for the better, since CBD has shut down crab, the big crab/tuna boats that don’t trawl or shrimp, who typically crab till July when they switch to tuna, are rigging for salmon. And I’m not talking little poobutt commercials like me, I’m talking 65’x25’ all weather salmon vacuums. There’s a ripple effect to this crab closure, only hope is they can’t catch enough to sustain... we will see.

They have salmon permits?

If they have a crab permit you better believe they have a salmon permit

It was a mess. The large permit crabbers sold out the little boats by supporting the closure. The big boats only make money early season when it’s wide open crabbing and then switch fisheries. The little guys go out after the big boats leave and get a better price for a pound with less competition.

The joke of it all is ship strikes kill probably 10,000x more whales than crab gear. But people want their cheap imports from overseas so it’s not going to be an issue.

I’m headed out of either Avila or Morro for sport salmon tomorrow. I’ll post a report.
