Default Lamp oil questions

I bought a couple of old school oil/hurricane/railroad lanterns.

I’m told they use paraffin or keroscene. So I have a few questions.

Does keroscene lose effectiveness over time like gasoline?
Do you need to rotate the fuel?
Is tiki torch fuel the same thing or just similar.

We had a 10-15 year old can of fuel that worked just fine

One of the gasoline additives.

Store off of the ground

Not as volatile as Gas so no but can get gummy

Do you need to rotate the fuel?

Like most things fresher the better

Is tiki torch fuel the same thing or just similar. most is Iso parriffin so yes is OK

Never seen lamp oil or kerosene go stale, even setting in a lamp. 10 years or better I have seen sitting. It does evaporate a little bit.

Kerosene will thicken-up over time, but not enough that you can't use it.

I've never had kerosene degrade, so long as it remains in the can with the cap on tight. I've also had kerosene sit in a lantern for years without any noticeable problems.

Most of the tiki-torch fuels are kerosene with citronella added as an insect repellent. Check the label, because you'll wind up with a monster headache if you burn citronella oil indoors.

That’s good to know.

You can get unscented lamp oil that is ok for indoor use. It will get stinky if unused for several years. I only use this stuff indoors.

Kerosene is always good to go. I've used kerosene that was 30 years old before, a little smelly, but it doesn't bother me. Besides, it was outside and camping.

I have tried diesel fuel. It works, but it can be a little smokey if you don't have your wick set right. The low sulphur fuel now days burns better than the old stuff.

no kerosene is a light "cut" of distillate the Iso Parrifin is a engienerd product that is far cleaner to burn.

If your local chevron station will order a 5 gallon can of chevron pearl kerosene for you, it is great product. Many years ago I lived on a sailboat with a kerosene stove and a few kerosene lanterns. Pearl kerosene was the best.
