RANGE: The Gun Room

OLL FRIENDLY: Yes, if pistol caliber.
AREAS: 25 Yd. Pistol/Shotgun
FACILITY: 3/4
STAFF: 3/4
OVERALL: 3/4
COMMENTS: I have never personally shot a OLL there as I do not have one is pistol caliber. The range is well maintained and all equipment works. Shotguns with lead ammo allowed..

I just realized that the map is open for editing to anyone. I guess we can keep it this way. At least we can try to rely on unmoderated behavior for now.
Thanks to everyone who hepled with range info!

Could someone please locate the Coalinga range on the map? I've heard a lot about it but cannot find any reliable map for it.

I made this for GlockTalk.com so I figured Id put it here. I also added Gun Stores I like too.

Ranges:
Shooters Paradise (Oxnard, CA)
Ranges fees decent (12 bucks for lane, 6 bucks for additional people), but ammo prices suck, they only allow their reloads or "clean" ammo due to the fact that they dont have a ventilation system. But you can shoot up to .308 i believe and shoot any shotgun shells you want. They also have a gun store inside, called B and G. I guess it cant be both under one name, or one started first I cant remember. Do not buy rifles/shotguns from them, they are a rip off, and they wont price match.
http://www.shootersparadiseoxnard.com/

Firing Line (Northridge, CA)
This one is not in venutra county, but they allow you to bring any ammo but hollowpoint. The highest caliber they go up to is .223 I believe. Shooters lanes are more roomy, but bringing your own ammo saves you loads of money. Their range fees are more 18 bucks for the lane, 9 bucks for guest. If you want to buy their ammo, its really decent (500 rounds for 150). I guess they also have their own reloading company, Cal Ammo or something. They also have a good collection of rental guns and range accessories. This one is my favorite indoor range out here, the only downer if the drive.
http://www.firingline.net/

Angeles Shooting Range (Lake View Terrace, CA)
This one is even further away, but if you want to shoot rifles long range (up to 700 yards) this is the place to go. They also have handgun and shotgun areas, and skeet throwers too. They are 12 bucks during the wk, 14 on wkends, and I guess Thursdays are half off for everyone. I personally haven't been here yet, but I will be going shortly. I have friends that go there and like it. They also sell ammo and reloading equipment, but they do not have rentals, so if you don't have any guns, youre out of luck.
http://www.angelesranges.com/

Gun Stores
Greta's Guns (Simi Valley, CA)
This place is so far the best place to go to for rifles and shotgun purchases. They are super friendly and all of their guns so far are at MSRP. They do sell handguns, but they are all on consignment (which usually means all used). So if you wanted a new handgun, they would probably have to order it, but Ive never asked them.
http://www.gretasguns.com/index.html

Gun World (Burbank, CA)
These guys are kind of high priced, but they have one of the best selections out here. They dont usually give prices over the phone so you might have to go there in person to see what they have and whatnot.
http://www.gunworldburbank.com/

Uncle Paul's Exchange (Ventura, CA)
They aren't the biggest but they do have a nice collection of guns. They also have super good deals on Glocks, S&W MPs, and etc. They also sell CA Legal AKs and ARs and AR lowers. It's kind of a wierd local, they don't have a sign, but they are sort of in the same place as a hair salon. No website as of yet. They do have weird hours though Tu-F 2-7pm Sat 12-5pm, closed mon and

Your rating is right on... every experience ive had was as you say and i gave it a few chances. Yes they sank a lot of money into the place but with only a 100yd range and bad staff its more of range you settle on than prefer.

Excellent map, but maybe the icons should be changed up? I understand their intention is to provide a visual representation of what firearms are to be used, but they lose their spatial significance in the process. This is especially true when there are all 3 gun icons present.

Maybe a simple legend with color coded dots would do? Actually, maybe they could just be shrank down some?

It is doable, but would require some work.

Chabot is beautiful. Going there in a couple days! The only thing that annoys me is there's no brass picking...but there's brass everywhere and barely anybody there when i went! Awesome place!

Range: Snake Lake Shooting Range
Location: Sierra Nevada
Type: outdoor/boonies
Website: No way
OLL Friendly: No one facilitates the range so yes
Facility: 1.5/4
Staff: 2/4 (Never see them, but when I have they are cool)
Overall: 3/4
Comments: You basically show up and do your own thing. They have a building that you can shoot out of, but people have shot it up... The range is very dirty, and it is pretty small. Never really see staff there.

Range: Cordova Shooting Center
Location: Rancho Cordova (Sacramento)
Type: outdoor
Website: http://www.cordovashootingcenter.com/
OLL Friendly: yes, they rent AR's as well
Facility: 3/4
Staff: 4/4
Overall: 3/4
Comments: Go to the office, pay your range fees, $15 for rifle and pistol or $3 + $.27 per clay, put on your eyes and ears and head out. Small shop with firearms for purchase or rent, as well as targets and ammo.

The pistol range is:
15-25 YARDS

The rifle range is:
25-100 YARDS

They also have 5 automated trap ranges and 5 skeet ranges.

Overall the staff is great, the benchrests are nice sturdy and cement and all have sandbags on them. My only complaint is that the target backstops are all shot through wood or have paper piled so thick it makes it near impossible to attach your target, and they are very unstable, blow around in the wind, I actually had my target completely blow over on a windy day.

COMMENTS: Located at the far West end of Davis Street in San Leandro, the San Leandro Optimist Rifle and Pistol Range is an often-overlooked gem of a range. It's easy to get to via the 880 freeway, and the range fee is only $11. During the week, the rifle range is often empty. Not only that, but they have extended hours (call them for the latest hours), so it's a great place to go after work. The only downsides for me are (1) there's no 50 yard range on the centerfire rifle range, (2) no FMJ ammo on the centerfire rifle range, and (3) there's bench-rest shooting only on the centerfire rifle range.

However, like I said in a previous post, I've taken my AR, FAL and AKM there, and have had zero problems. All the guys that I've met who worked there genuinely enjoy talking about guns, and a couple of times I've gone there and spent more time shooting the breeze with the RO's than actually shooting!
range fee was $13 when I went there (per person). Which was very expensive because we were 4 (and two of us just shooted a few rounds). And also no discount for Feds.
The indoor range is too dark (at least from the far left side where we were).
We also had to stop for 15 minutes so a class could use the area.
No big caliber inside (no 357 mag / 38sp OK)

The outdoor range is OK (but nothing like Chabot!)

Range needs a paint job!

+1 on Lytle Creek. They are OLL friendly, allow steel targets and fast firing. I believe on the VERY top of the hill is 300 yards on Bravo 2.

Also, they allow pretty much all targets except for glass. I was there and people were shooting soda bottles (empty ones of course).

Range:Richmond Rod and Gun club
Location: Richmond, off the parkway
Type: outdoor
Web Link
OLL Friendly: I'd say so, I have seen several EBRs at the range
Areas: 25 and 100 and skeet for non members, 200, action, fishing area and other stuff I probably don't know about for members
Facility: , eye and ear protection sold, porta potty, on cold days they sometimes have soup or a bowl of chili for patrons to enjoy
Cost: $10 all day, it is either $5 or $3 for members, I haven't joined...yet
Staff: Very friendly, I was a gun noob with a Big 5 Mosin and they were helpful and friendly, I have gone back consistently since
Overall: I have a limited experience at ranges but this is by far my favorite, there is a grill/bar for members with 1$ beer for after you shoot(so I've been told, I haven't been inside yet) I have never had a problem finding a table and I have always felt safe.

On second thought, it's no good, stay away!

If anyone could give a review of circle s, it would be much appreciated.

Matt

Question: Does Lytle Creek have cover over the firing line for shade? Summer sun can be horrendous out there... Thanks in advance.

I know this post is a little old, but I've been to this range a few times now, and I must say, I agree completely with the 4/4 ratings. Everybody there is very safety conscious (as they should be) and it's pretty cheap to shoot($10 per day per person.) You can do your own thing, or get help with whatever you need.

Highly Recommended!

LEO, Military, and Boy Scout friendly. Night shooting to 100yds on Thursday night.

Yes, I am a little biased(!) as I am an RSO there when I stay home long enough The website is a little aged, but still has all current info and pics.

Another vote for Chabot in bay area. went there only 1x but had a great time. the trip is fun and you can take family, just let them go for a walk as there are trails around. theres also chabot lake not to far off so they can stay occupied while you go plinking.

I went there today and was told I could not shoot my GSG-5(MP-5 Clone in 22 rimfire)...Apparently the owner does not allow firearms which look like assault weapons...So they are not OLL friendly...Even in 22 rimfire...

SimSig,

Sorry to hear that. Personally I think firearms related busineses that are willing to throw the rights of others under the bus should be boycotted by us all.

COMMENTS:Very nice place, but I stopped shooting there for a few reasons. $15 to shoot, but free if you buy a $350/yr.(?) membership. Last time I shot there, they wouldn't allow '06, but, I see on their web page that they now allow it. At the time, they also had a "no Wolf" policy, which I find a little elitist, but, whatever. They also check your ammo for steel as they have a no steel policy. I also took points off on "staff" because I got a vibe in there when I brought in my SKS and Saiga that they weren't "cool" with my choice of rifles. Could be just me. They seem a lot more interested in their members and LEOs. Things might be different now. I don't want to run them down, this is just my perception.

I agree with this. I used to shoot pistol here - has been at least 2 years since I last shot, and you described it perfectly. Looks like nothing has changed.

I was at the Crossroads Gun Show at the fairgrounds, I noticed something about a new range opening, does anyone know of any new ranges opening in the Orange County area or closest proximity?

COMMENTS:

I got my HSC here, I'm still wishing I bought my gun here.

Far and away, the coolest guys I've ever met in a gun shop. The atmosphere here is always very friendly, the worst thing that ever happened to me here is I had a couple guys swipe one of my targets. But the people who actually run and work in the place are very nice.

They keep their guns in good shape for rentals. The only problem I've had was with a Red Hawk they keep. It's an old, old gun and has seen abuse no normal gun will ever see. Sometimes it will fail to fire in double action. When my dad rented the gun he had a lot of problems, after complaining to the range master, the RM gave him a discount on the ammo and apologized profusely.

Both my father and I have year passes here($190). The year pass gets you unlimited range time and rentals. You only pay for ammo if you rent. If you happen to buy from them(a little pricey and a smallish selection) you can come in during your DROS period and shoot your gun.

My only complaint is some of their equipment is a bit shoddy. A couple of returners have broken and the gun rests aren't in great condition. It can also get pretty warm on hot days. But despite those minor complaints, I would never go to another gun range. I absolutely love these guys.

They're also very newbie friendly. It may just be because it was a group of four ladies, but the last time I was in there 4 girls came in wanting to shoot. The guy on staff walked them through the basics of a handgun with a snapcap and then took them out onto the range and showed them everything they needed to know. He even stood by for a while to make sure they were OK.

Just smile and don't be a grump and they'll treat you like family.

COMMENTS: Allows .22 to 50BMG. No armor peircing specific ammo. Lots of steel gongs from 125yds out to 475yds, paper targets to 300yds. Most RSO's are retired military, and will only get loud for a safety violation (yellow line, muzzle awareness etc). Seperated handgun and rifle lanes on same range. Two trap and one skeet(from high houses). Range site is also home to the Hogue Action Pistol Range (S&W international shoot, Speed Challenge, Ruger Take-5 Challenge etc). Other Club venues include blackpowder(no modern in-lines allowed at club shoots...pilgrim), Rifle and handgun silhouete (all calibers, out to 500yds for rifle), and Cowboy Action (Home of the internationally fielded John Wayne Shoot....bring enough gun!). LEO, Military, and Boy Scout friendly. Night shooting to 100yds on Thursday night.

Yes, I am a little biased(!) as I am an RSO there when I stay home long enough The website is a little aged, but still has all current info and pics.

I have been to this range numerous times, and I agree as well! A great place to shoot. All range masters are extremely nice, helpful, and willing to help range noobs out.

Growing up I never shot at a real range, we had plenty of property and knew enough people to never need to go to one. I recently moved, and as such now have to go to the range to shoot. I went one day, and explained to the range master that I had never shot at a real range, and he explained SOP to me without making me feel like a fool for not knowing the range ropes.

Another time me and a group of about 14 others went to shoot trap, and about half of the people had never shot real trap before. The lady working there was incredibly helpful explaining everything and very accommodating.

Also, they offer a few free targets (most of them kinda suck, but they're free). The free ones are in a cabinet behind the safety line, probably ones people forget when they leave. They also offer plenty of spotting scopes and bean-bags/supports.

This really is a great range!

I was just there last weekend and the staff were very nice although they did check my ammo.... I had to buy thairs due to mine being magnetic. And it was very overpriced. I did find some BLM land to fire that stuff on.

RANGE: Los Altos Rod and Gun Club
LOCATION: Los Altos
TYPE: Outdoor
WEB LINK: http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com/
OLL FRIENDLY: Yes
AREAS: 7, 10, 25, 50 and 100yds as well as a 40yd tin can range and manual and electronic trap ranges.

COMMENTS: Love this range, highly recommended, ROs are friendly and will help you if you need it, just make sure to read up on the rules and listen close to the Range Master speaking over the PA system, it's easy... follow the rules and you'll have a great time. Almost guranteed to see some OLLs when you're there, love the tin can range!

Oh, as a sidenote, "green" fee for one day is $15, they sell ammo at the front office for decent prices, but don't try to buy too many boxes as they won't allow it, only what you can reasonably shoot in one day.

COMMENTS: Hard to judge the staff, I think there were two people there, and I was the only one shooting. The guy working the front counter was nice enough, although I was all alone back in the range. Maybe a good thing or a bad thing I'm not really sure. I didn't mind. Overall range was nice and I'd definitely return, although I should mention that this was the first range I'd ever been to at all, so I really have no point of comparison.

Oh, and I believe it was $13.57 for range time, targets, and eye and ear protection.
I used to shoot at this range 2 to 3 times a week when I worked in San Bernardino years ago. Over the last several years it has seen a continuous slide, as has the whole town, in my opinion. The people are nice and friendly, but the range just looks ghetto now. Their air system is so overpowered that even on 100+ degree days I bring a sweatshirt to wear during shooting.

Funny how different people percieve the same place. I was getting ready to do a review on this place when I noticied this one.

My review was going to say that American Shooting Center was the most well run indoor range I had ever shot at. I purchased my Kaiser OLL from them, so I would say they are OLL friendly. When I was there thay asked if I was shooting Wolf, but didn't check whan I replied I was not. I have shot .223 and .308 there as well as many different pistol calibers. If you go on a weekend be there before opening or plan to wait. They are packed.

Just got home from Los Altos. I'd give this place all 4's as well. Best range I've been to since I moved west and definitely the best in the Bay area (in my opinion). Its like Chabot without all the bad attitudes. Fun and safe, well worth the price of admission.
