+1 on SLOSA. Cool night shooting. They light the hillside up pretty well. Great RO's when I was there. I live too far away to go often (~100mi) but the place is cool and well equiped. No rentals though.

It would be cool if someone knew how to make this thread into some kind of Wiki so that other members could add/update info. Any takers?

COMMENTS:
Great, Friendly staff. Ammo for sale (expensive but not exorbitant). No rentals. Tends to be a somewhat self-regulated place - there are RO's and they will stop or yell at you for being stupid, but one of the members will probably stop you first. In general they seem to have more facility than they have staff to run it.
Location is about 5 mi up West Camino Cielo from Highway 154. HERE

COMMENTS: Allow centerfire rifle caliber up to .308 but in order to shoot rifle, you'll need to take class and obtain "permit" (easy). Clean, very well lit and ventilated. Front-room store pretty well stocked.
Rimfire rifles don't require a "permit". Also, I believe the two rightmost lanes are the rifle lanes. Also, they don't allow for military surplus ammo for the rifles. I heard that a jackass was using some steel core ammo in his rifle and ended up shooting up the target hangers and wires. After shooting up one lane and paying for the repair cost, he goes ahead and shoots up another one.

Shotguns are banned there too as of about 2 years ago. Some group was using bird shots.

+1 for Ontarget though. The staff there are pretty cool and they know us by face.

COMMENTS: Pros: Staff is very friendly, carpeted sitting benches, nicely enclosed when raining, close to 280, Free Targets......Cons: No tin can area, they do though have a metal plate at 100 yards, only 10 centerfire lanes, tends to get busy very quickly, gotta haul your gear from parking lot.

If I have an hour or 2 to kill, I'll go here, a day trip mostly likely will head up to Los Altos, still haven't been to Metcalf

COMMENTS: Hard to judge the staff, I think there were two people there, and I was the only one shooting. The guy working the front counter was nice enough, although I was all alone back in the range. Maybe a good thing or a bad thing I'm not really sure. I didn't mind. Overall range was nice and I'd definitely return, although I should mention that this was the first range I'd ever been to at all, so I really have no point of comparison.

Oh, and I believe it was $13.57 for range time, targets, and eye and ear protection.

Default Firing Line - Burbank

RANGE: Firing Line - Burbank
LOCATION: Burbank
TYPE: Indoor
WEB LINK: http://www.firingline.net/burbank/
OLL FRIENDLY: NO
FACILITY: 3.5/4
COST: $18.00 w/o ammo purchase (non-member)
STAFF: 4/4
OVERALL: 4/4
COMMENTS:
Pros:
This is the only range I've shot at in Los Angeles that actually denies entry to people if they fail the safety demonstration. Every other range I've been to, if a renter fails the safety demo, the employee just tells them what they did wrong and lets them go on in, which makes me really nervous to say the least. Here, if you flash an employee or customer while fumbling around with the slide/mag release, they will not let you shoot unless someone more experienced is in your group.
The employees are courteous and professional, and the facilities are clean and well maintained. The range provides free coffee and doughnuts (while they last), a big screen TV, a selection of magazines and accessories, as well as a snack/drink machine.
Cons:
I'm docking FL 0.5 points because it's way too dark in there and they don't seem to care. It's not a big deal for me, but those of you with corrective lenses might have a problem acquiring your sights or your target. I've seen better lighting in strip clubs.

Default LAX Firing Range

RANGE: LAX
LOCATION: Inglewood
TYPE: Indoor
WEB LINK: http://www.laxrange.com/
OLL FRIENDLY: NO
FACILITY: 3.5/4
COST: $18.00 w/o ammo purchase (non-member)
STAFF: 3/4
OVERALL: 3.25/4
COMMENTS:
No Wolf or Blazer Ammo allowed (Blazer Brass is OK)
Pros:
Large pro shop with a gunsmith that comes in on Tuesday nights, ultrasonic cleaning service. Rifles with frangible ammo are allowed, as well as shotguns. Generally not as busy as other ranges in the area. Range is well lit beyond ~5 yds. There is a big screen TV in the lobby area.
Cons:
Allows obvious first timers to shoot without showing safe handling skills. Also, one of the employees has a very dismissive and rushed attitude when dealing with customers. Also, LAX has a webcam that shows the range, which is a little disconcerting for those privacy-minded folks out there.

FACILITY: 3/4

Pros:
Located near the intersection of several major freeways. Big bore revolvers for rent, as well as an SKS, M1 carbine, M1911s and other weapons of note. The staff all carry openly, which reminds me of home.
Cons:
The location is in a really sketchy area and the parking lot will make you wish you had that CHL/CCW. The crowd on date nights (weekends) can be nervewracking, especially when someone waves a shotgun with a bad primer in the chamber in your direction and asks what to do. Also, the so-called "sideways-gun-toting bad crowd" does pop up every once in a while, but they're usually showing their girlfriends how to shoot a glock and are well behaved.

FYI: There's a light switch above the booth located on the pulley box. Also, the muzzle flash proves light.

RANGE: Torrance Sharpshooter
LOCATION: Torrance (LA Area)
TYPE: Indoor
WEB LINK: http://www.socalsharpshooter.com/
OLL FRIENDLY: Definitely Not.
FACILITY: 2/4 (expect multiple disabled lanes)
COST: $15.00 w/o ammo purchase (non-member), $12.00 w/ ammo purchase
STAFF: 3/4 (Some of them are great, some not so much)
OVERALL: 3/4
COMMENTS:
They offer rental of a small assortment of handguns and rimfire rifles. They are definitely strict on the weapons you use. They won't even allow you to use a shotgun with any sort of pistol grip (stock or not). When I asked why not, the guy just responded "people with pistol grips on their shotguns tend to go crazy".
Pros:
You can rent some guns there. They aren't very strict on rapid fire. They sell weapons and will allow you to try out your weapon during DROS periods. Depending on who you deal with, the staff can be helpful.
Cons:
Some of the staff there (the infamous old guy) have serious personality issues. The range is poorly maintained (lanes are down, target rails aren't functioning correctly etc). The fees are a little high for what you get. The cost of renting a gun is steep (you pay per rental, and require 2 people). They often charge you for things you didn't buy/need.

TYPE: Indoor
WEB LINK: http://www.LAXRange.com/
OLL FRIENDLY: Yes.
FACILITY: 4/4 (expect multiple disabled lanes)
COST: 1st time shooter set up fee $2.00
Handgun Shooting $13.00 with purchase of range ammunition
$18.00 without purchase of range ammunition
Hi Power rifle Shooting $15.00 frangible ammunition must be purchased from range
Shotgun Shooting $15.00 00 BUCK or Slug ammunition must be purchased from the range
STAFF: 4/4
OVERALL: 4/4
COMMENTS:
They offer plenty of rental weapons (more than the other shooting ranges I've been to). Once you pay for one, you can sample pretty much all of them without paying extra. They're laid back, but not too laid back. The waiting area has a big screen TV and comfortable couches. They have a pretty big pro-shop too.
Pros:
Plenty of rental weapons. Free Ear-pro & Eye-pro. Comfortable waiting area (for the wife who is afraid of loud noises, except the ones that come from her mouth). Pro-shop with a large selection. Solid, functional range. Ammo prices aren't that bad (they also sell it in bulk)
Cons:
They don't sell weapons (not their fault, Inglewood won't let them). Parking can be a pain in the butt. For rifles, they require a certain type of ammunition (for good reason).

(I was not doing rapid fire or double taps) so I slowed it down and he came back again, I was running about 2 seconds between shots. He asked me if I did not understand what he meant about 3 seconds. I told him not to worry, I am leaving now anyway.
When I went to pay for my time (about 30 minutes) I was told that the range fee is $16.00 per lane I came unglued and told him this range is a rip off at that price. His manager came over and advised me that if I could not agree with there price it is best I do not come back. I assured him I would not.

Since I live about 35 miles away and there are at least three ranges closer then Reeds it is no big deal.
Again the total rating is 2 out of 4.

++++1 on your review. This place is a rip-off! Just like the store. And the guys behind the counter aren't too knowledgable either.

architecture is that of a normal cookie cutter indoor range. 3 people to a lane.

very crowded. small indoor range with even less gear space than other indoor cookie cutter ranges. some of the staff was rude to say the very least. basically when part of the group wanted to leave early staff told them to **** off until the whole group was ready to go. this issue could have been resolved with a little attention to what the patrons wanted and what the situation was, instead patrons were met with snide remarks and backs turned. there were more than 4 people behind various counters and after they declined to resolve this very simple issue while jesting and jeering with each other they stood around with arms crossed, until a bit later when other patrons needed help.

I like the firing line a lot. i can agree with much of what kodiak said above. i've patroned this range long before i bought any firearms and i've seen them insist that first timers bring a friend along that knows what they're doing. i feel they take patron safety seriously.

the staff has never ever been discourteous to me which is why they will continue to get my business whenever i am shooting in southern california. they have a wonderful lounge area with a tv and the "look out" area many times has doughnuts.

the only con i can speak of is there was one time the ac wasn't working, it got hot, i got a little sweaty in the face, but they fixed it by hte next time i went.

Range: Oaktree Gun Club
Location: Santa Clarita
Type: Pistol, Shotgun, and rumor of a rifle range opening
Web Link: www.oaktreegunclub.com
OLL Friendly: Yes, sales/PPT
Staff: 4/4
Facility: 4/4
Cost: Pistol is $20.00/day, shotgun varies according to what you are
doing.

This is an excellent range. Multiple reactive targets. Allows rapid fire. pistol range has caliber limitations due to proximity of targets to firing line and potential for damage/ricochet. 2 falling steel plate racks, 3 outdoor bays with one cofigured for action pistol (requires approval from manager to use). 2 proshops with nice people behind the counter. Now here's the kicker *** They have a BAR at this range!!!!**** Strict no return to the firing line after alcohol consumption (thank goodness).

As far as the rifle range, I was told that they have a space set aside for the range, but you have to pay to keep an RO on the line, so they are waiting for demand to keep it open. I have never seen it or heard that it is open, but that is what I was told.

Overall, excellent facility.

Does anyone know if the Rancho Cucamonga Magnum Range allow JHP's? Any other ammo restrictions on pistol and shotgun ammo? Reason I ask is because the Riverside Magnum Range does not allow JHP's but allows shotguns and you have to be at the far corner of the range.

OVERALL: 1/4
Operating Period:
April 15 to Oct. 15
Operating Hours:
M-F 7am to 3:30
Weekends you will need to checkout a key from the rangers station in Truckee
COMMENTS:

Pros:
Drive right to the firing line, Most likely will have the range all by yourself
Cons: Place is just an open area to shoot. No overhead shading, benches or tables and trash everywhere.
With the National Forests all around I doubt I will be returning here anytime soon.

THREAD UPDATE: It seems I went to east side of the range, there is a whole other section .06 miles down
the road with Benches, trees and such out to 275 Yards. Now I have to go back

the architecture is that of a normal indoor cookie cutter range. two people per lane.

The FL is OLL friendly (Pistol caliber only)

Somebody said a few pages back that San Leandro Optimists Range was "Unsafe". I don't know what happened when you were there but everybody I have came in contact with there is very friendly and very safety conscious.

Also I wanted to add to the one full review of the San Leandro range that it is now $12 to get in and $13 for the "Steel Shoot" they have EVERY Saturday from 6-PM-10 PM outside. They have a nice practice setup where you can soot at poppers an falling targets. I just did it fro the first time last Saturday and everybody there (Employees and Customers) were very friendly and provided clear instruction with a whole lot of emphasis on safety. This is a great place to practice for competitions other then Richmond rod and gun club. I'll be doing the steel shoot every Saturday if possible.

Steel Shoot:
Holsters and mag holsters ALLOWED
Shooters start by vocal instruction and beep from a timer
Separate Gun and ammo table, guns can only be un-holstered and handled at that table unless you are up to shoot obviously.

It was beyond a blast to do, I wish more people would support that range. It;s getting old but it's right here in the heart of the east bay, easy access(I live right down the street lol) and have a little taste of everything (i.e outdoor 100 rifle range, indoor pistol maybe shotgun too, and outdoor steel shoot).

Please people be cautious about whom you are labeling "GANGBANGERS" or "HOMIES", "HOODS", etc. if they are idiots because of the way they are handling firearms then just leave it at that. Don't judge a book by it's cover. I'm as safe as if not more safe then most people I'm shooting with at any particular range but some of you judges would automatically start assuming by my appearance/vehicle appearance.

Lets get over that people.

RANGE: Lytle Creek
LOCATION: End of road lytle creek
TYPE: Outdoor
WEB LINK: www.lytlecreekrange.com
OLL FRIENDLY: YES - very friendly
AREAS: open area out to 50 - 100 - 200 yards
FACILITY: yes - target - snacks - porta potties - shade
COST: $12.oo
STAFF: Yes - friendly
OVERALL: 10 out of 10

Sign reads as you go in. Shooter's park and check in at office. HAD A DRINK?????? - turn around go home. Don't drink at barr's on the way up the road.

Lady at check in was very friendly and hadd (LIVE) rattle snake (IN A CAGE) on the counter to show you - what to NOT let your kidd play with and you should stay away and only shoot at targets. She had two more rattle snakes behind the counter. She was feeding to release - mandated by the FOREST RANGER guyz.

There was a store at the range but I did not go there - probably ammo shedd.

The range master meets you near the shooting benches and was very friendly and asked what you wanted to shoot and target type. They tend to put like firearms togther. 7.62x54mmR shooters were grouped together - the sonic blasts were cool. It was funney we all had "re-arrrsinalled" patch up M44's and 91/30's. All purchased at BIG-5.

Fast fire no problem. Fun stuff no problem. No mention - no check - no problem steel magnetic ammo. The hill has been cleared (see picture) and you can not farther than the 200 yard line. Many people (RAMBO's) were fast fireing at orange shootguns clays. I recycled some they did not use. Some folks had metal gongs and spinners.

Sunday not crowded. No waiting. As some left others arrived. Other shooters were nice and talk-at-tive. Friendly. I loaned my 3lbs hammer and staple gun several times. Try to come prepared - but I forgot stuff also.

Try to bring your big ARCO thermass cup. Many eats and treats on the lower road at the off ramp of the 15fwy there are three gass stations with Mc Donalds - Taco Bell - ARCO full mini mart. The little gas station no longer sells ammo.
I loaded my cup with ice to the top and kept adding drink as the day went on. I saw the Barba-Q up the way - butt I was distracted by the shooting. Some eateries on the road on the way up the road.

For porta potties (if your are a clean person) might want to bring wipes and maybe a roll of you favorite TP. Porta potties were clean - buttttt - there were some nice people there that day with kidds. Mother's are MOM.

Over all yes I will go back.

The road and scenery on the way out was rugged-ly pretty. The road is paved on the way the the range - no problem for my PT Cruizer. Saw Honda's and some High Brydes sedans. Lytle creek towards the end is a slow road - so do not stress - 15mph and 25mph sections.

Range: Sunnyvale Rod and Gun Club
Location: Cupertino
Type: Outdoor
Web Link: www.sunnyvalegunclub.com
OLL Friendly: Yes
Areas: Trap and Rimfire/Pistol/Rifle
Facility: ****/****
Cost: $12
Staff: ****/****
Overall: ****/****

Business Hours:
Tuesdays: 9am - 9pm for rimfire, pistol, rifle; 9am - 5pm for trap
Fridays: 9am - 5pm
First and Third Sundays: 10am - 3pm

Went here today and had a good time. It shouldn't be hard to find this place. Along the reservoir you'll come along a sign which points to the unpaved gate and it's really hard to miss.

Sunnyvale Rod and Gun offers trap shooting and a rimfire, pistol, and rifle range up to 100 yards. If you're bringing the whole gun safe with you, try and park at the far end at the start of the hill where the rimfire, pistol, and rifle range is located or borrow a cart. The trap shooting area has parking spaces right up to it.

I spent the day at the rifle range and right off the bat the staff was excellent. I forgot my earpro in my other car, but one of the ROs gave me a pair of cheap in-ear foams to use. Entry fee is $12 for the whole day. Spotter scopes are on rental for $2.
You set up targets on posts which fit on a metal foundation. This is nifty because the foundations are set at the 25, 50, and 100 yards so you can bring it up close to zero, then keep on moving it back during ceasefires when you feel comfortable. In addition, the 100 yds have a couple of metal targets spread out (around 4 - 5) so when you're zeroed you can hit those and hear feedback. Ceasefires occur around every 15 minutes.
Check the calendar on their website to see if anything special is going on. When I went, there was a rimfire competition going on and they were shooting at silhouetted ducks, rabbits, etc.

Remember to be safe or be kicked out!

Secound tripp to Lytle Creek with the CA BEARS on August 8th 2008.

I thought I better take more pictures of the place.

Sign as you arrive. One driver got yelled at for speed. 5 MPH ONLY.

Check in and store - targets - candy - drinks - drinks. I did not go into the other store for ammo. Why the red area's on photograghs??? What peploe look like and their LIC plate is none of my business. BRING CASH $12.oo each shooter - not sure but they were not aking credit cards or ATM or DEBIT when I checked in.

In the earlier post on page 11, I said they had a snake in the counter - so here is prooff. They lady at the counter that it usually it takes two viles of ANTI-venom, if you get bitt by a rattle snake at the hospital. Each vile is $6,000.oo. Children need to be transported to the hospital ERGENTY, because of they size. Children get shown the snake to make sure they know NOT to play or tease snakes. Play near MOM and DAD.

Open bench - bring your own shade.

Covered benches - still might want a hat and a coller full of waters iced down.

I was shooting at a COCONUT HUSK. NO FOOD TARGETS. Regular targets and clean up. Range is still very fun and the Range master want you to have funn.

You can not shoot at fruit, because the FOREST SERVICE wants every target a NON FOOD item not to attrack animals. The range master told me it worth a $1,000.oo fine/ticket and he would RATT me out in a secound. All very nicely. He said they want to keep infractions down to keep range open. The range and forest service do not want problems and are PROactive.
They stopped the firing while a Jack Rabbit was trying to cross the range.

More info on the BAR

Is this for rent? Is it a machine gun or semi auto?

As far as the bar goes, its there. It is a resturant, so hence the liquor license. Usually a few people in there getting food and drinks, again if you are drinking, there is no shooting..

Is the faciility for rent: Well, the show Shooting Gallery has done a few episodes up there and I imagine you can rent the facility....There are alot of LEO's that use the place, so I imagine if you have the permits, you could shoot machine gun there....

The manager of the pistol side is Gene, and if you talk to him in advance, and explain what you want to do, he will try to accomodate you (within the limit of the facility)

I also read it as BAR = "Browning Automatic Rifle" and was quite impressed that they had one for rent. I assumed that there was some sort of punctuation error with the subsequent statements about alcohol and range rules, etc.

Pros: BRAND NEW, clean and well kept facility. $7 Per Hour Range fee.

Cons: Range Master is RUDE! I asked if double taps were ok, he responded with, "lets put it this way, more often than not, people can't handle that, I don't want my walls or roof all marked up, YOU DON'T WANT ME TO COME IN HERE!" I was dumbfounded,. No eyes and ears rental, must purchase your over priced ammo from Bass Pro Shops. Its a HUGE deal getting your weapon into the friggin' range. At the door, they lock up your gun for you, then unlock it at the range. Won't be going back.

COMMENTS: Second time there and staff is friendly and helpful although they don't seem to pickup the phone. Most all shooters are friendly and social; I even directed several to check out CalGuns. Just stay behind the line during the cease fire and you're good.
I used to go there every couple weeks. Every staff member I've met was nice upon first meeting and very social if you choose to spend a few minutes talking to them. There was a great old guy working there that would BS with you for hours if you had the time, Wally I think. Most of the guys that work the range are also active in the action pistol course they run there. If you're not afraid of being scolded and can admit when you're wrong I highly suggest anyone living in the area sign up. They have you come out on a Saturday and you go through a full day of their instructions, noting out of the ordinary, but you never know when or where you can pick up info you didn't already know. They are very strict on you for your first 2 days and rightfully so. If you don't screw up on Saturday you get to come back the next day and help setup for their Sunday action pistol shoot. You work most of the day, then you get to run the course... TAKE YOUR TIME!!! and don't screw up. Any little screw up and you have to wait a month then do the WHOLE thing all over again. In the course of our instruction we were told there are 2 thing that ALWAYS happen. People that don't make it through the course the first time NEVER come back and Police officers never come back. I broke rule #1. I'm probably the only person that ever did. Anyhow, I don't know if they still do, but they allow everything from stock to full race guns in the action pistol area. The first time I heard what sounded like a full auto M16 while I was at the regular pistol range and my friends simply smiled saying no that was just the fully modified 1911 in the hands of the action pistol range master, I knew I wanted in. I think they even do action pistol type courses using rifles, mostly ARs I think. If memory serves, it's members only, so don't walk in there acting cocky.

The staff seems very cool and willing to help. They have a "pro shop" with basic shooting supplies. They also sell some firearms (including OLLs!) and do transfers. They have a nice lobby with a table and TV. Overall an outstanding range.

What to look for if you're going for the first time.
Good range, I have an annual pass here. Unfortunately I lost all of my guns in a tragic boating accident.

I'd like to invite handgun/smallbore rifle shooters in the San Jose area to check out the old historic San Jose City indoor range, which is operated by the Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club.

The range is located at 1580 South Tenth St. in San Jose, between Alma Ave. and the County Fairgrounds, with easy access from the 280/10th St. off-ramp.

We open the range to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, from 1830 to 2130, and on Saturday afternoons from 1400 to 1700.

We offer an inexpensive, if not luxurious, alternative to Reeds and Target Masters, at $5/hr, or $1/hr for 'juniors', (who must have a parent/guardian present)

The range is staffed by volunteers from the Rifle Club, who have undergone Range Safety Officer training.

We do not rent firearms, nor sell ammunition at the range, but will provide eye and ear protection to anyone who does not bring their own.

Firearms are limited to handguns in 22 through 45 cals, and smallbore (22 rimfire) rifles.

Due to the limitations of the old backstop, we cannot allow use of magnum handgun rounds, or hardball (military ball or FMJ).

Lead, copper plated lead, or any jacketed bullet with hollow or soft lead point is acceptable, if kept under magnum velocities. (44 special level in 44 mag, or 38 spl in 357, etc.)

True enough, the old range was a bit 'dingy', in times past, but we've been working on renovating the facility, and training range officers to be friendly and welcoming to the public, whilst maintaining appropriate safety procedures and standards.

I'll offer a 'free trial' evening at the old range to anyone who would care to e-mail me to arrange that, if you'd like to check out the range, and, hopefully, give us a chance to earn a good review here.

My e-mail address is carla@tactical-link.com

cheers

Carla

Rapid fire is allowed. They have about 8 trap feilds, 2 skeet fields, and one olympic skeet field (the Kim Rhode field.... they dont let you play there unless your established). YOU MUST check out their sporting clays setup.. its out of this world. A gator drops you off at the top of the mountain and you are free to shoot for however long you can pay for.
