So the range checks the lower of you AR to see if it is on a list?

Generally no - they either allow AR's or don't. Those that allow figure you either have a REGISTERED AW(assault weapon) and are in legal possesion - or you built an OLL that is not listed on the DOJ ban of AW's in a legal configuration. They leave the law enforcement up to law enforcement officers.

Reed's indoor range.
2\4 overall
They have a 3 second between shots policy. When a range employee came onto my lane and told me that I thought he was kidding. (I was not doing rapid fire or double taps) so I slowed it down and he came back again, I was running about 2 seconds between shots. He asked me if I did not understand what he meant about 3 seconds. I told him not to worry, I am leaving now anyway.
When I went to pay for my time (about 30 minutes) I was told that the range fee is $16.00 per lane I came unglued and told him this range is a rip off at that price. His manager came over and advised me that if I could not agree with there price it is best I do not come back. I assured him I would not.

Since I live about 35 miles away and there are at least three ranges closer then Reeds it is no big deal.
Again the total rating is 2 out of 4.

I'm not sure what the deal is with 3 second pauses. I wouldn't consider 1 per 1 or 2 seconds rapid fire. I've never had this problem at Fields Sports Park or Target Masters? However, it is their range and they can institute any rules they wish. I just wish there were more rifle ranges close to the San Jose area.

Wow thanks a lot for all this great info guys! I just moved to the LA area and have been wondering where I'm going to shoot.

Do you guys know if any of those northern LA ranges have IDPA/USPSA matches?

Regarding Livermore, the trap range is good. It's voice activated and they have night shooting on tuesdays for most of the year, up to 10 pm.

The rifle range is basic and you will get yelled at if you violate the rules, but the rules are there for a reason and pretty basic (no approaching the bench during cease fire/target change is the basic rule).

I think that United Sportsman in the Concord area is better for pistol and rifle but Livermore is better for trap.

For anyone in the Dublin/Pleasanton/Danville/Livermore/San Ramon areas, Livermore is a bit closer than either Chabot or United Sportsman and is a very decent place to shoot. Once you get to know the range guys they are quite friendly.

COMMENTS: I have been shooting here for almost two years. I never had any problem until the last few times. They just hired some new kid there lately and he drives me crazy every time i show up. Two weeks ago, he asked to check my ammo, so i showed him my ammo. Then he asked to check my guns. I opened up the case and he picked up my g26 (without a magazine). He didn't even rack the slide to check for a round in the chamber or anything. He pointed at the wall and pulled the trigger.
What's this guy look like? I think I know who you are talking about, but just want to confirm...

RANGE: Bullseye Indoor Range and Gun Store
LOCATION: San Rafael
TYPE: Indoor
WEB LINK: http://www.bullseyerange.com/home.html
OLL FRIENDLY: From the website, "Only authorized firearms and ammunition may be used. Any round traveling over 2000 feet per second is prohibited. Only .22 Long Rifle and standard handgun rounds are allowed on the 18 yard range." However, I've seen a guy with an M1A using low-velocity rounds so if you use sub-2000 FPS loads it should be alright
AREAS: 10 or so shooting lanes, targets positioned electronically from 0 to 18 yards. In the main area there is a large assortment of longarms and pistols, and they have a nice selection of rental guns. Holsters, gun cleaning supplies, magazines, and various other accessories for your firearms are all stocked along the walls.
FACILITY: 4/4
STAFF: 4/4
OVERALL: 4/4
COMMENTS: The staff is always very friendly and helpful, and I'm on a first-name basis with most of them. The owner, Bill, is very knowledgable and takes the time to talk with his customers one on one. The facility is always kept very clean, and if there is ever a malfunction on the range a staff member will always come out to help. I highly recommend the range to anyone in the S.F. Bay Area.

COMMENTS:
The skeet and trap range is at the base of a hill. The clays are thrown towards the hill, which partway up is the rifle/pistol range. To get to the rifle pistol range, you drive alongside the people shooting clays. The pistol/rifle range does not appear have any area where hearing protection is required, which is odd as the registration desk/area is about 7feet from the first "booth." They only have 25 and 100yd ranges. Because of their backdrop, to prevent people from shooting too high and up and over the hill, they have a roof over the shooting stations that is very low and angled down and away from the shooters. The teenage girl at the desk was not very friendly and the range security officer was a complete a-hole. I will not be returning and would not recommend this range to anyone.

The pistol and rifle range is kind of a pain, the I have yet to meet a decent RO, and the way the shooting stalls are configured we call it the sound chamber because all the muzzle noise is directed towards the shooter. I am a member, and i only go to the rifle range a couple times a year to set up a new scope or sight in rifles for hunting.

The trap range on the other hand is excellent. there is an extremely friendly atmosphere, the traps are all voice activated and the staff is very nice. They have tuesday night shoot which are alot of fun to do after work. you get to shoot under the lights.

What about admission prices for each range? I think that's been left out.

COMMENTS: I was going there about once or twice a week since I lived just across the street. I stopped going there after it started being frequented by LEOs and I moved to Orange County. Not that I don't like LEOs or anything, its that the ones that shoot there are unsafe. I've had bullets they shot the wall with hit my foot, causing lots of pain but without penetrating force. I've watched them blow holes in the floor with their shotguns. Frequent muzzle sweeps. I've been going there from back when the Asian guys ran it, and they were awesome. The newer guys haven't been quite as nice, but still cool. They allow higher power stuff there and have a decent selection of rentals.

expect muzzle sweeps, gangbangers, and people who dont understand safety. sure the RO's are relaxed and let you do what you want, but that means the idiots can do what they want too

COMMENTS: Situated in Brea a little ways off the 57. FMJ pistol cartridges are the only thing allowed (M1 Carbine is OK). They have a wide variety of rental pistols. The staff seems very cool and willing to help. They have a "pro shop" with basic shooting supplies. They also sell some firearms (including OLLs!) and do transfers. They have a nice lobby with a table and TV. Overall an outstanding range.

What to look for if you're going for the first time.
+1 I have avoided this range before because it is $15/hr to shoot but they have a deal now that you can get unlimited range time for 30days for $30. Even if you only go 5 days a month thats only $6 a day. If you are concerned with safety I would say that this is the best range I have been to so far. Get ready to be the only civilian there though ( you will be surrounded by LEO ).

+1,000 on the highly recommend. I was there this week and witnessed two of the staff volunteer to stay and do the DROS on new sales even though they had been off the clock for a bit already, so that the customer wouldnt have to wait another day to start the wait period.

As far as the Lytle Creek Range, I have been going there for a few years and as stated, the staff is very professional. I do have a correction tho to the original post. The 300yd. range is closed due to the fire hazard. There were a couple of fires there last year.

As a result, they voluntarily closed it before the Forest Service asked them to. That impressed the FS.

If you go on the weekends, get there at 8am when they open, as they get very crowded. I generally go there only on weekdays. They allow bowling pins also.

Trader Jack, I'm not trying to flame you, especially since I'm brand new, but weren't you aware of the range price before you began shooting there. I'm not disagreeing with your assessment of the range, just wondering why you were upset about the price.

Re Riverside Magnum Range. I lived in the city for 16yrs. until last year. It was much better when the Asian gentleman owned it and Louis worked there. They don't have a FFL anymore, so they don't sell guns like they used to. They now permit shotguns and there were some skinheads shooting there the last time I went and fired them like it was a machine gun. Nothing done about it and I certainly wasn't going to say anything to them. Haven't seen any le problem. I'm retired le and I don't shoot like that, so you'd be safe around me.

COMMENTS: They have friendly staff and a well maintained facility. They do allow rapid fire of some guns, I'm not sure what the rule was on which however. I have had a good time everytime I've gone to this range I definitely recommend it.
My favorite place.

Sorry wildcard, using your template.
Range: Burro Canyon Shooting Park
Link: http://www.burrocanyon.com/info.html
Location: Azusa
Type: Outdoor
Areas: 50 - 400 yd Rifle. Pistols. Shotgun. Sporting Clays.
Staff/ Range Officer: Varies from 2/4 to 4/4 rating
Overall Rating: 3.8/4

Comments:
Pros - Rapid fire is allowed. No problems with OLLs and AKs. Can bring your own targets such as fruits and vegetables, bowling pins, etc. Has a very affordable $200 annual membership with generous benefits such as bringing a friend for free, unlimited range use, etc. Private ranges are available for rent. The drive there is great if you enjoy mountain roads. Very secluded, and the food is delicious. Also, Members get free use of Tac ranges if they're unused.

Cons - Can get crowded. No lane markers so placing your target stand at the correct location can be a challenge. If your target frame gets shot up, you lose your $8 deposit. You may get stuck behind a slow driver that won't pull over to let you pass on your way there and back. 100 yard limit with reactive targets. Restrooms are of questionable cleanliness. Range heirarchy : Gang members and posers on the West side of the rifle range, Serious shooter stick to the East. Similar phenomena have also been observed on the pistol range.

Aren't the two main ranges oriented more north-to-south?

How about if we describe their location by "left or right side of each range, facing downrange". Who goes where?

In looking at those pics of Burro Cyn, that is why I like Lytle Creek better (besides the distance of course).

At Lytle, none of those people standing on the concrete by the weapons, would be permitted to do so. Everyone has to stand in the dirt off the concrete until people downrange return and the call to begin shooting is given. Just seems a lot safer IMO.

JHP is now allowed. I haven't renewed my membership yet but intend to. Staff is awesome. I don't think I've ever seen all the lanes operational, one or two are always broken for some reason or another. It's a small range and gets busy in the evenings, expect a wait if you pop in around 6-7pm on a friday or saturday.

COST: $10 non-members, $5 members for all day (membership starts at $50 annual, and includes the whole family. Multi-year and life member available)

COMMENTS: Allows .22 to 50BMG. No armor peircing specific ammo. Lots of steel gongs from 125yds out to 475yds, paper targets to 300yds. Most RSO's are retired military, and will only get loud for a safety violation (yellow line, muzzle awareness etc). Seperated handgun and rifle lanes on same range. Two trap and one skeet(from high houses). Range site is also home to the Hogue Action Pistol Range (S&W international shoot, Speed Challenge, Ruger Take-5 Challenge etc). Other Club venues include blackpowder(no modern in-lines allowed at club shoots...pilgrim), Rifle and handgun silhouete (all calibers, out to 500yds for rifle), and Cowboy Action (Home of the internationally fielded John Wayne Shoot....bring enough gun!). LEO, Military, and Boy Scout friendly. Night shooting to 100yds on Thursday night.

Yes, I am a little biased(!) as I am an RSO there when I stay home long enough The website is a little aged, but still has all current info and pics.
I was just at this range last weekend. Excellent range! The RO was very helpful and friendly. Made this out of town visitor feel welcome. I'll go back again next time I'm in SLO.

Quick note about Burro Canyon. Be careful with their chairs. I sat down with my loaded AR and apparently someone a lot fatter than me had sat in it previously. I'm all of 150 lbs and it collapsed under me. Not exactly the safest situation. Lucky for me I was able to quickly set down the weapon before I fell.

RANGE: Iron Sights
LOCATION: 618 AIRPORT RD OCEANSIDE, CA 92054
TYPE: Indoor
WEB LINK: http://www.iron-sights.com/
OLL FRIENDLY: Very
AREAS: Indoor to 25yds.
FACILITY: 4/4
STAFF: 4/4
OVERALL: 4/4
COMMENTS: It's a bit of a drive from where I'm at, but it's worth it. Polite staff and reasonable prices on reload ammo ($11 for 50rd .45/.40S&W). They allow holster draw, rapid fire, and OLL.

Clientele seemed to be just as friendly as the staff. Mostly military and locals.
