That recent OLL friendly range thread got me thinking and I know that is a dangerous thing, but I figured it would be a good idea to get a range review thread going. So I did a quick search and turned up nothing. In fact, I would think this ought to be a sticky somewhere.
I think a star rating system is easiest. 4 stars being the best, 1 star being the worst. Rate each of the mentioned aspects, then give an overall rating that does not need to be calculated by the other ratings. So you might give a place mostly 3's and 4's, but overall think of it as a 2 for whatever reason. Freeform comments below. I figure the best bet is KISS and not have an overkill of things to rate them on.

RANGE: Los Altos Rod and Gun Club
LOCATION: Los Altos TYPE: Outdoor WEB LINK: http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yes AREAS: 7, 10, 25, 50 and 100yds as well as a 40yd tin can range and manual and electronic trap ranges. FACILITY: 4/4 STAFF: 4/4 OVERALL: 4/4 COMMENTS: They have friendly staff and a well maintained facility. They do allow rapid fire of some guns, I'm not sure what the rule was on which however. I have had a good time everytime I've gone to this range I definitely recommend it.

RANGE: Reed's Indoor Range
LOCATION: San Jose TYPE: Indoor WEB LINK: http://www.reedsindoorrange.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: Didn't seem like it AREAS: Electronic target return shooting stations (20 I think?) FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 3/4 OVERALL: 3/4 COMMENTS: They have friendly staff and a reasonably maintained facility. Some of the shooting spots were a little out of repair, burned out lights, etc. I did have a good time and would return to this range.

Range: Burro Canyon Shooting Park
Link: http://www.burrocanyon.com/info.html Location: Azusa Type: Outdoor Areas: 50 - 200 yd Rifle. Pistols. Shotgun. Sporting Clays. Staff/ Range Officer: Varies from 2/4 to 4/4 rating Overall Rating: 4/4 Comments: Pros - Rapid fire is allowed. No problems with OLLs and AKs. Can bring your own targets such as fruits and vegetables, bowling pins, etc. Has a very affordable $200 annual membership with generous benefits such as bringing a friend for free, unlimited range use, etc. Private ranges are available for rent. The drive there is great if you enjoy mountain roads ![]() Cons - Can get crowded. No lane markers so placing your target stand at the correct location can be a challenge. If your target frame gets shot up, you lose your $8 deposit. You may get stuck behind a slow driver that won't pull over to let you pass on your way there and back. Advice - Go on the weekday or early on the weekend. Bring your own target stand. Last edited by wildcard; 05-14-2007 at 12:54 PM.. |

RANGE: Livermore Rod and Gun Club
LOCATION: Livermore TYPE: Outdoor WEB LINK: http://www.lprg.org/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yes FACILITY: 2 STAFF: 2 OVERALL: 2 COMMENTS: The skeet and trap range is at the base of a hill. The clays are thrown towards the hill, which partway up is the rifle/pistol range. To get to the rifle pistol range, you drive alongside the people shooting clays. The pistol/rifle range does not appear have any area where hearing protection is required, which is odd as the registration desk/area is about 7feet from the first "booth." They only have 25 and 100yd ranges. Because of their backdrop, to prevent people from shooting too high and up and over the hill, they have a roof over the shooting stations that is very low and angled down and away from the shooters. The teenage girl at the desk was not very friendly and the range security officer was a complete a-hole. I will not be returning and would not recommend this range to anyone.

RANGE: Angeles shooting Range
LOCATION: Sylmar, CA INDOOR/OUTDOOR: Outdoor WEB LINK: http://www.angelesranges.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yes FACILITY: 4/4 STAFF: 3/4 OVERALL: 4/4 COMMENTS: The only reason I give it a 3 on staff is because there is a young kid there that should be used as the 600 yard target. The overall experience with the staff has been very positive. It has steel plates starting at 200 yards out to 600 yards, a pistol range with steel from 35 yards to 100 yards (a lot of fun with a lever in 357 mag) as well as clay throwers. Great place to spend the day. ![]() |

He was very annoying. I was about to give a review and decided not to because of him. I think he was just new - and he will get sifted out or shape up. I hope.

RANGE: Riverside Magnum Range
LOCATION: Riverside TYPE: Indoor WEB LINK: http://www.riversidemagnumrange.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yes AREAS: 50 ft. lanes w/ electric target holders FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 3/4 OVERALL: 3/4 COMMENTS: Basically, no more and no less than the basics. Range goes out to 50ft., enough to make sure your OLL functions, and got some practice with your pistol at the same time. You do have to buy their .223 ammo, but I don't know the price since I'm still saving up for my first upper. Staff seem friendly enough, but seem virtually nonexistent after they take your money - I like it that way, I'm sure others don't. It can be a zoo; on some days the eses will be there to unload their magazines as fast as they can, while their targets at 7 yds remain undisturbed. Never felt unsafe, though. Having tables where you can clean your gear afterwards is a great idea. At the end of the day it's a little grimy and 50 ft. is a little short, but it serves my purposes when I can quickly get over there, just a mile away from the office. |

RANGE: Burro Canyon
LOCATION: Azusa, CA TYPE: outdoor WEB LINK: http://www.burrocanyon.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yep, everyone seemed to have one FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 3/4 OVERALL: 3/4 COMMENTS: Seemed like a nice place when I went. RO's weren't Nazis. The guys doing the check ins seemed a little hurried/stressed, but weren't unpleasant or jerks. No crazies when I went, everyone just seemed to be having fun. The range was fairly cleaned up. The benches weren't bad and the covering over the shooting area was nice to keep off the direct sunlight. Cease fires seemed to be timed perfectly, seeming to happen when everyones shooting has calmed down. Little crowded on the weekend but not horrible. Outhouse for a bathroom. Its a little windy there and knocked over our targets a few times. Good BBQ lunch! |

RANGE: Riverside Magnum Range
LOCATION: Riverside, CA TYPE: indoor WEB LINK: http://www.riversidemagnumrange.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: ? AREAS: 50 ft. lanes w/ electric target holders FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 4/4 OVERALL: 2/4 COMMENTS: I was going there about once or twice a week since I lived just across the street. I stopped going there after it started being frequented by LEOs and I moved to Orange County. Not that I don't like LEOs or anything, its that the ones that shoot there are unsafe. I've had bullets they shot the wall with hit my foot, causing lots of pain but without penetrating force. I've watched them blow holes in the floor with their shotguns. Frequent muzzle sweeps. I've been going there from back when the Asian guys ran it, and they were awesome. The newer guys haven't been quite as nice, but still cool. They allow higher power stuff there and have a decent selection of rentals. |

RANGE: Prado Olympic Shooting Park
LOCATION: Chino, CA TYPE: Outdoor, Outdoor/Covered WEB LINK: http://www.shootprado.com OLL FRIENDLY: No AREAS: Shotgun: Trap, Duck tower, wobble, Bunker Pistol/Rifle: 25 meter and 50 meter ranges, archery range FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 2/4 OVERALL: 3/4 COMMENTS: The staff in the clubhouse are nice and friendly. The ROs at the 25 and 50 meter ranges are total Nazis. Their definition of one second is more like 5 seconds on your average watch. The pistol/rifle ranges are sectioned off by brick walls, so if its not busy you get your own mini range. Rifles are rimfire only, no centerfire or large calibers. If you are shooting for accuracy or want to test out some new handloads, this is a fine place to go for that. They have benches, chairs, sandbags, and a chrono you can use. The shooting area is covered and the target areas are uncovered and mostly grass. I really only go to this place for shotguns. I love their trap ranges. Trap is done by tokens, machines, and a microphone. It is setup nice, after all, it was used for the Olympics. They've cleaned it up significantly, as it was pretty run down there for awhile. I want to try out the archery range one of these days, but I haven't as of yet. Every time I have gone it has not really been crowded, especially in the pistol ranges. I have been to this place more times than I can count and will continue to go for the shotgun sports. |

I inquired with them and they told me that their new backstop can handle any caliber, but they will only allow OLL AR's configured to shoot pitols rounds such as a 9mm carbine. The reason being that a .223/5.56 round can easily go through their ceiling!

Trap Ranges also available. FACILITY: 4/4 STAFF: 4/4 OVERALL: 3/4 COMMENTS: Very friendly staff, very little in terms of eats but the range staff is real nice and on Saturdays as far as my knowledge brings in a box of donuts and brews a pot of coffee for sale. OLL, 1919s, and .50 BMGs have all been fired at 100 yards with no trouble from the range staff, and on occasion you might see a Calguns/OLL flier. Won't get bothered if you don't rapidfire/cross the line during ceasefire.

LOCATION: Burbank TYPE: Indoor WEB LINK:http://www.firingline.net/burbank/ OLL FRIENDLY: NO AREAS: 3, 7, 10, 20(?) yards FACILITY: 4/4 STAFF: 4/4 OVERALL: 4/4 COMMENTS: Been a member there for 2 years. Good basic handgun classes. Excellent on accessories. Decent rental selections. They have friendly staff and a well maintained facility. I saw Macauly Caulkin and the brunette from "That 70's Show" one Saturday night. It's more handgun, 22lr, etc. friendly. Cons: Shotguns, OLLs, double/triple taps are not allowed; and it's really popular/crowded on the weekends. Last edited by Greg-Dawg; 06-09-2007 at 9:15 PM.. |

I never had any problem until the last few times. They just hired some new kid there lately and he drives me crazy every time i show up. Two weeks ago, he asked to check my ammo, so i showed him my ammo. Then he asked to check my guns. I opened up the case and he picked up my g26 (without a magazine). He didn't even rack the slide to check for a round in the chamber or anything. He pointed at the wall and pulled the trigger. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I would suggest including whether or not they allow rapid-fire or double-taps and whether or not they have ammunition limitations, like allowing steel core/jacketed (magnetic) ammunition. These are questions that come up a lot in the forums. Cost might also be a good idea.

RANGE: LAXRange
LOCATION: Inglewood TYPE: Indoor WEB LINK:http://www.laxrange.net/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yes AREAS: Adjustable paper to 25 yds. RAPID-FIRE: No, one shot per second. AMMO LIMITS: Yes. Copper jacketed, brass for handguns. Must buy frangible on-site for rifles. No steel. COST:$13.00+$2 for 1st time set-up FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 2/4-4/4, really hit or miss depending on who's working there OVERALL: 3/4 COMMENTS: Handgun rentals, pay for one and trade out. Highest priced rental is a TRP Springfield 1911 at $20. They have a wide variety from AR's to .500S&W, and nearly every modern 9mm-.45. Ammunition is reasonably priced, especially if you purchase larger quantities. You can not collect your brass, it must remain behind, so not a good place for reloaders. RANGE: San Leandro Optimist Rifle and Pistol Range
LOCATION: 3001 Davis St, San Leandro, CA TYPE: Indoor / Outdoor WEB LINK: http://slrange.tripod.com/ OLL FRIENDLY: Yes AREAS: Indoor Pistol (electric target returns) / Outdoor 15/25/50 yard Pistol (& .22 rifle) / Outdoor 100 Yard Centerfire Rifle FACILITY: 3/4 STAFF: 4/4 OVERALL: 4/4 COMMENTS: Located at the far West end of Davis Street in San Leandro, the San Leandro Optimist Rifle and Pistol Range is an often-overlooked gem of a range. It's easy to get to via the 880 freeway, and the range fee is only $11. During the week, the rifle range is often empty. Not only that, but they have extended hours (call them for the latest hours), so it's a great place to go after work. The only downsides for me are (1) there's no 50 yard range on the centerfire rifle range, (2) no FMJ ammo on the centerfire rifle range, and (3) there's bench-rest shooting only on the centerfire rifle range. However, like I said in a previous post, I've taken my AR, FAL and AKM there, and have had zero problems. All the guys that I've met who worked there genuinely enjoy talking about guns, and a couple of times I've gone there and spent more time shooting the breeze with the RO's than actually shooting! |
