Howdy, I just signed up to comment my good 'ol knowledge about shootin spots in humboldt. Theres afew gun ranges, I have yet to go there however I am planning on signing up for one. There are two places I go to shoot, One is Lacks Creek (BLM Land) Its a neat drive, but its hellva ways out there, and you need a truck or something that can off road to get to the shootin spots. The first shooting spot I use is right before the left turn off to the official lacks creek area thing, but if you want to be even more secluded you drive about 20 minutes into the park and find a place to go shoot, I saw some people goofin around with 22s in the park entrance so its not heavily watched, you can get away with doing things you shouldn't be doing there. The second is horse mountain (six rivers), its farther away than Lacks Creek (relative to eureka) but I was able to make it in my honda fit, the road winding up is pretty scary but drive slow and don't go anywhere above 30mph. I met a few people through Horse mountain, its more popular so if your looking to talk to people I recommend it. When driving there, you get to the parking lot with the sign and maybe some parked cars on a gravel lot, Take the first left turn up to the radio tower direction but don't take the second left to the tower, keep going straight until you see the shootin spot, its very noticeable. Its alot more lively and a ton more people, I heard police like to go up there and shoot their service weapons so keep that in mind.

If you see some ginger dude with an old beat up muzzle loader thats me

Shooting is tough out there. Besides going WAY up kneeland and asking a landowner if you can shoot on their land, there are very little choices. Generally if you go in toward willow creek on 299 there are places out there that are acceptable to shoot. It can be pretty fun doing old black powder stuff out there. I remember a guy accurately launching bowling balls from one mountain to another from a cannon. SOOO much fun.

I don't post much, but I came in here to report that this is indeed a legitimate shooting spot. Everything was as described in your post. I appreciate that.

I was there on 04/19/2021 between 2-4pm. It's a quiet and isolated place, serene even, but also somewhat spooky. I had the entire shooting area to myself. I had to walk down to it though as the the gate was closed. Hopefully it's unlocked the next time I go up.

Apparently there's multiple areas up there to shoot at on Horse Mountain, as behind me (about a half mile as the crow flys) closer to the cell phone towers someone was discharging some large calibers firearms.

I just moved to the area and January and had been wondering were there was a BLM/USFS areas to shoot at and I'm glad I stumbled upon this post. Truly. Thank you for posting.

Furthermore this seems to be a place where locals go quite regularly when they want to do stuff most ranges will not permit; rapid fire, tannerite, etc.

I also heard that there's a place near Fortuna you can go shooting at? Someone at the gun counter at sportsman's was trying to explain it to me, and a few locals I've talked to mentioned it as well, but I haven't been able to find 'the spot'. Also I've heard/read conflicting reports that that area has since been shut down for public use due to a bunch of shenanigans.

Anyone have any info on that?
