Question WHO REMEMBERS HUTTON RIFLE RANCH TOPANGA CA.

WHO OUT THERE IS OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER OR SHOT AT HUTTON RIFLE RANCH OFF TOPANGA CANYON NEAR PCH. OR THE POWLEY PSI COMPUTER THAT THE OWNER DEVELOPED LONG BEFORE COMPUTERS TO DETERMINE CHAMBER PRESSURE LOOKED LIKE A SLIDE RULE. AS FAR AS I KNOW ONLY RANGE IN SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS.

It was 1962, and I was 12 at the time when my dad and I went up to HRR. My God father gave me a war souvenier, a Kar M98 Mauser, and my dad bought a 20 round box of WW 170 Gr RNSP 8mm Mauser ammo to shoot. I remember the narrow windy switch back road you took getting there. I also remember stuffing cotton in my ears to help with muzzel blast. My first shot nearly knocked my 97 pound body off the shooting bench! For the next 18 rounds I got better, the last bullet I decided to keep to commemorate the day. My dad kept it, and when he passed away I found it in his things.

Your the only response in 11 plus months who replied to post. Guess the old guys are gone. I was 18 in 1969 the last time i went there. Only thing I did not like was every person had to pay fees per gun even if shared. Seems like it was 2 bucks per gun per person. Lot of money then.

Smile Old Enough

6 yrs later for this response. I lived at Hutton's Rifle Ranch/Range in 1957-1958, and I was 12 yrs old. My Dad ran the range for Bob Hutton. I have many memories. We had no electricity at first. The windmill down by the trap house provided our water supply. I had to take the school bus from the canyon down to SF Valley to attend school. Highlight was shooting Armalite (AR15) which was in the testing phase of development.

"Bob Hutton used the property's box canyon for a rifle range where he tested new rifles for Guns and Ammo magazine. The rifle range was later opened to the public where it became a popular Canyon feature until the property was sold in the late 1960s."
