Default Proof you can't buy skill Range story

After years of offering my buddy to pop on down to shoot with me he surprised me one day by telling me that him and his new Brazilian wiafu want to go shooting. Excited I did my inventory and for what was needed and set everything up for a range day.

It turns out that his father was paying for both him and her to attend private shooting lessons he kept secret from me. I guess he wanted to show off what he learned and get a little more practice in before he finally decides on what he wants to buy for his first gun.

Range day arrives and I request they get to my place an hour before in order for me to give them an orientation in what we are going to be shooting. Everything from basic history of the firearm to how it works and then most importantly safe use. That's where he drops the fact that they've been getting private lessons. Surprised to hear it I ask why they didn't bother just taking me up on one of my many offers to teach them. He explained that he wanted a professional. A little confused I say alright well hows that working out for you. Only to be wagered a 12 pack of beer that he does better then me. I smirk and agree.

We get to the range And I see he has taken everything his instructor said to heart especially the part about having your butt out. I giggle a little and let him do his thing. After a couple magazines I ask him why he didn't ask me in the first place, Stating that I'm pretty good. (he has never seen me shoot in all the years he's known me) once again he laughs at me and shakes his head. Noticing that he doesn't believe me I decided to give him a handicap before we agree to the Rules.(excuse the looters label he put on the target, he thinks it's cute to do that)

Rules: 2 mags of .45 out of a 1911 from 40ft out
>first magazine is for center of mass and the second reserved for headshots.
>he gets as much time as needed and he can even pull the target in midway through in case he wants to analyze his shots.
>I have 15 seconds to do controlled pairs/double taps while also including time for a reload.

Private training, taught from a professional vs Son of a Fudd, who learned to shoot before he could read.

It was only after the results did he actually agree listen to my tips.

He still won't ask you. Especially if you outshot him in front of his wife. Atleast he's getting into shooting what more can you ask for

Hey just take it in stride. At least they’re shooting.

Hopefully they learnt to vote.

Good on you. Although if were you, woulda done separate targets.... Hopefully this doesn't deter him and his wife from keeping on shooting.

One thing I don't understand--why did his dad pay for his lessons???

Any chance you can get him to shoot for money? Could you sucker him in to shooting for $ with a couple of your "friends"?

Since I don’t know everything, I’m always willing to learn. I train new hires at work and I even learn from them sometimes. I try not to let pride get in the way of common sense.

I wish that I had someone to teach me guns/shooting. I had to learn guns all on my own. Still learning.

Good shooting, enjoy that 12 pack!

Your friend didn’t do too bad for a new shooter. Always good to get new people involved in the sport.

I think your story simply emphasizes the need to vet your instructor--regardless of whether they charge money or not. Just because someone hangs out a shingle and takes your money doesn't guarantee they're any good.

Having said that, part of it is the instruction but most of it is still on the shooter. As an instructor I can point the way but my students still have to get there themselves. Here's a recent student that was consistently shooting groups into a 5.5" target at 12 yards. This was her second time on the range ever with a total round count of under 100 rounds. Great work on her part.
