Default PRS Match SouthWest Regional &; Novice Prone Division -Avenal Gun Club

PRS SouthWest Regional Match with Novice Prone Division

https://www.precisionrifleseries.com...es/match/1719/
Sunday 5/19
7am –3pm
Avenal Gun Club -- Near Harris Ranch off Highway 5
cost $40

You can PM me if you need more info - Jim
PLEASE RSVP Match Director's email SPACE IS LIMITED scott@westernatv.com
Onsite Camping is available, Harris Ranch is about 20 minutes if a hotel is needed.

This match is VERY unique; not only because it is a hiking course between 2-4 miles depending on your draw, the fact that you get to shoot across several canyons, a diverse AOF, but because it is combined with TWO matches happening at the same time. We have the entry level match called the Prone Division where the shooters get almost 2x the time as positional shooters and a Open Positional Division. First time prone shooters and people who have not shot high scores, will be given longer stage times.

Prone Match: (This is our entry level division)
The targets are VERY generous for prone shooter. It is fashioned after the Whittington Center in New Mexico, where the COF never changes. It is ideal, for hunters people wanting to shoot a variety of distances and AOF and see what they can do with 1 shoot per target, people looking to vet their range dope, practicing wind holds and of course great for your first several matches.

You can shoot it slowly or challenge yourself. This works because prone "is the most stable" position. You can practice using only your tripod or shooting sticks, use your tripod in combination with obstacles, practice on all or just a few obstacles while still using the longer prone time limits. You can shoot your standard hunting gun off a backpack or your race gun.. The key is that you must submit your score as a prone shooter. Really you can do so much, learn so much.. You'll often shoot next to the people on Obstacles so you'll get to see how they build their positions. I think this is the only match that allows such a diverse approach to shooting styles. Consider this a chance to just to shoot long range more than a "match".

PRS/Open Division: (You can absolutely shoot the Open division as your first match.. it is supportive and friendly too!!!!)Just like the prone division, hiking course between 2-4 miles depending on your draw. This is a South West Regional PRS Match, but anybody can attend. A strict COF that must be followed if you post your score in this division (gaming is NOT ok). The COF is different every match. If you deviate from the COF, take extra shots or "game it", it is a Stage DQ. Because Obstacles are about 1/2 the time and 50% harder (way more unstable) and it takes way longer to build a position, than prone, it is not uncommon, for someone to shoot 1/2 the points when they switch to obstacles, assuming the round counts are the same.

In May, for the PRS SouthWest Regional, we'll have roughly 17 positional stages with over 100 shots lined up. Prone will have a few less rounds. Again, the PRS/Open Division is NOT the same every month and this particular style might not be repeated for some time.. Get your name on the Calendar for May's 19th Open division SPACE WILL BE VERY LIMITED -

I can't make the April Match, but will be out there for May. Hope to see you guys out there soon, come out and camp the night before and have a beer, if you're driving from far.

Does everyone shoot on the same steel?

Sounds like a lot of fun but I don't think I can bring myself to enter California again if not forced to.

For the most part. Obstacle guys shoot 17 stations and move between shots

The prone guys only shoot 8 stations, don't really move once set the have 50 targets and take a long time. But there are more targets than that.

I'd have to leave my carry weapons at home. I'd feel naked without them, and nobody wants to see that, trust me.

Well I'm not going to make it. Found out last night my daughters 8th grade promotion is at noon on 5/20. I won't chance not making it. I was hoping the kids would be done on 5/17 and I would have taken the family for week to visit friends and family after the shoot.

Hey, if I wanted to attend with my gas gun, I could bring my 20 round mags now!

Bah, the gun itself isn't legal though.

This sounds tempting. Can you define "long range"? I'd consider bringing my hunting rifle if targets maxed out around 550 otherwise I'd bring something more suitable for 1k.

I'd just have to motivate myself to make the 5 hour drive.

Default Long Range Positional Match & Novice Prone Division

Hi~

We max out at 900y for this match. The targets are generous at 2moa or larger (except for the May 19th) match where we’ll sneak in a few a bit smaller. Like all PRS matches the average distance is actually shorter than people think, maybe 400ish.

Assuming your hunting rifle has the scope for dealing with the drop and wind, in some ways it is great for really understanding your hunting gun. Of course heavier guns are easier to shoot, but harder to carry. I’ve shot my hunting guns several matches, mostly to ensure I really have great dope.

Prone class shoots less rounds sends only one round per target with LOTS of time. This simulates hunting a bit and keeps barrels from getting to hot.

Open Class you’ll shoot more rounds on the May 19th COF much faster.

So I could even bring my .223 bolt gun, lol. Just be randomly lobbing them in at 900. At least it has a scope.

Great!

Don’t forget to introduce yourself we’ll get you squaded with shooters who can help if you have questions.

I might even try to get a range day for cal gun shooters that are signed up, to get some range time before the match.

Here is a partial list of the sponsors -

We will be raffling off sponsor items so that ALL shooters will have a chance to bring home something from the companies that really stepped up to support this match.

Gift certificate or items from:

Examples are of a few companies on board that already had their 2019 marketing budgets planned, yet with a big hart stepped in to show some love for a bunch of California shooters...

More to come....
imagine just come shoot and you might be a winner.... strike that, you’ll be a winner anyway for the great experience.

This looks like enough fun that I actually considered doing it. But it's 12 hours of driving each way, and I have to work on the Monday after.

American Airlines flys into Fresno. Wouldn’t be a bad drive from there. Otherwise you could just look into flying into San Jose on Southwest.

If you’re even thinking about going get your name in, really not that many spots.

Matches like these are usually $250-$275 for a two day format and honestly a bit less friendly..

This might be the best $40 bucks you can ever spend.

FWIW I drive from Canada to the Southern states and fly when further.. sure it is a bit of a drive, but it will be fun, nobody is going to look down if you struggle, guys will loan their bags and help wherever they can. It is hands down one of the most nurturing matches I’ve ever shot.

If you sign up to shoot obstacles you can always switch to prone mid match.. this is 100% unique..

Oh and last place and in between has a chance to win something fun, probably worth more than your entry fee

For the May 19th Match approximately 105..

For most one day matches usually between 50-80 depending on the venue.

Will do hope you can make it. I shot the NorCal Tehama match weekend before.. Those guys had 1/2 field style — another great good one to shoot.. see you guys had a match on Easter!

Really hope you can make it out it is fairly unique setting.

It starting to look like the shooter raffle might even be a 50/50 chance at winning a prize!

We’ll keep plugging away to see if we can’t get that number even higher

Thanks!! -- sold out and we are actually over capacity -- BTW only two weeks to go

More goodies showing up daily - I hope first time shooters gets the draw to walk the prize table before those of us who have shot high enough to walk first in the past.

We are turning this one on the head with a complete random prize draw - no relation to how one placed.

Did you get registered with Scott?

If so, you are GTG if not, the match is full..

That saidAfternoon is better than late evening - but we can work just about anything out.

PM me and I'll get you my cell. We might leave a radio at the gate or give out a temp combo,, Not sure yet.
