Default This is why I can never get ahead.

I have been trying to save money over the last few months but every time it looks like I am going to be able to put some away, A deal comes up that I just can't resist.

The latest episode of "How to keep Highpower broke" is one of those deals that are too good to pass up. I just stumbled into three (3) Winchester Model 52's.

All are apart and I still have to go back and dig out the stocks and various sights and magazines for them, but for $200 apiece, I just couldn't pass it up.

The oldest was made in 1928 and I believe this version is called a pre-A model. Since it is parkerized, I believe it might have been military issue. The rear sight base is for a Marble-Goss diopter sight.

Next up is a Model 52B, made in 1951 that was fitted with either a Lyman 57 or 524 (?) rear sight.

Last is a 52C, made in 1956 with two sets of scope mounts, a Redfield mount on top of the receiver and a set of Unertl type blocks mounted on the barrel.

I don't need any more projects, but I have wanted a Model 52 for a long time. They tend to be somewhat expensive so prices have kept me away. I realize that I will no doubt have to source a few parts for these as the estate they come from has literally a container full of miscellaneous gun parts. The deceased former owner was a gunsmith and these were among the guns he had apart for some reason or the other. The triggers and bolts operate as they should and the bores are pristine so maybe he took them apart to refinish the stocks.

Oh man, you found them! I sent off three Model 52s to a gunsmith to have the stocks refinished and thought I'd lost them forever when the 'Smith passed away and the keepers of the estate couldn't find the paperwork with them saying they were mine! Thank you for returning them!!! 😁

Nice find. Think I paid a grand for one 30 years ago.

I see external scope mounting blocks on one of those 52s. Are you going to mount a Unertl or a Litschert?

Just want to keep $$$ pumping into the economy.

The 52C does indeed have the barrel mount scope bases for both a long Unertl/Lyman style scope as well as the more modern Redfield style on top of the receiver.

I am somewhat up in the air a to which style scope I am going to run on it, although initially I am going to go with the Redfield set up as I have a set of split 1" rings in my stash for it already. The 52B is factory drilled and tapped for the barrel mount bases, so I may move those from the "C" to the "B". At $800-$1000 for a decent Unertl or Lyman scope, it may be a while before that happens unless I run into one in the pile of parts from the estate.

ROFLAO!!

No I'm not especially gifted in that department.

But... I have been happily divorced from my second ex-wife for nearly 27 years. After a slew of girlfriend's since then, I have come to the realization that I neither want, or do I need anyone telling me what I can or can't do. I'm pretty sure that if I was still married to she-who-must-be-obeyed, I would still be living in Commiefornia (shudder) and I wouldn't have been able to travel the world like I have since we split up. I know for sure that I wouldn't have been able to put together my modest little collection of firearms.

Very nice pick ups. If you are going to be broke, that's the way to do it.

BTW, EGW makes a scope mount that uses the barrel mount screw holes. I've got one on my 52B

The bottom one is the B model with the EGW mount

I have three 52's. Two nice ones as in the top pic below and another which was modified with a SUPER heavy barrel installed and being made into a single shot.

I have never decided what to do with it.
