Default One month to Africa

On Saturday, April 20th a buddy and I are leaving to hunt with Kalahari Hunting Safaris in Southern Namibia (East of Keetmanshoop) for 6 days.

We each bought a 2x1 package hunt (2 hunters with one professional hunter) which includes (each) one trophy Kudu, one trophy Gemsbok, one trophy Springbok, four non-trophy Gemsbok, three non-trophy Springbok and as many Baboons, Jackals and Hares as we want to shoot.

I used my airmiles to get us Business Class tickets but unfortunately because of this, we have 40 hours of travel time (including layovers) to get from LAX to Newark, to Addis Ababa and then Windhoek. Then we have a 7 hour drive from Windhoek's international airport to the Karas Mountains region of southern Namibia for the hunt.

We'll be staying on three contiguous, low fence, sheep farms with a total of more than 250,000 acres (390 square miles) of free range hunting.

I'm taking my left handed Model 70 Classic Safari Express in 375 H&H but I haven't had a lot of free time over the winter to work on long range loads so I'll be shooting my standard 300 grain TSX load at 2500 fps.

Sighted in 2.6" high at 100 yards puts me dead on at 200 yards and 10.6" low at 300 yards. The wide part of the lower post of the Duplex reticle in my 2.5-8X, Leupold sits right on at 307 yards so I'l use that for my 300 yard sight point. I'll probably limit myself to 300 yard shots.

My friend is shooting a Browning 300 Win mag with a 180 grain Accubonds.

Sounds like a great hunt, but you've got the travel all wrong. Instead of flying east with 40 hours of travel time, fly west and the cross the date line for a total travel time of -7 hours.

Thanks for sharing. Although I’m not a big game hunter, I enjoy reading about your experiences and seeing the pictures.

I wiggled in my chair when I saw the title. That means in about 6 weeks we will get a full story with pics!

Take some photos with some baboons you shoot. That's one thing I want to hammer when I finally go to Africa.

Looks like one heck of a trip!

At least the 30 day wait should help prepare you for the weeks worth of travel time... ouch.

Thanks guys, I just got asked at work if I could go to Peru and supervise a steam turbine overhaul from April 10th to May 6th. I told them "No" as I've had this trip on the schedule for 6 months and I have someone else going with me. But, it looks like I have to go to Texas on April 4th through the 16th which is going to kill my shooting time.

You should probably go fix that pesky turbine, and I reluctantly will take your place in Namibia. Anything for a friend...

Sounds like a great trip! You must have a robust taxidermy budget!

Looking forward to photos and details and outfitter report.

I just loaded up 50 rounds of ammo for the 375 H&H, once fired brass, sized and re-primed, 67.5 grains of IMR 4064 and a 300 grain Barnes TSX.

3,375 grains of powder
15,000 grains of copper
>200,000 fpe

Do you have a script for Ambien?
We had a plane break on our way to Dar Es Salom
It was 48 hours from leaving my home until reaching the hotel

Taking the pills enabled decent sleep on the red eye to London
And the first night in Africa, it helped shut down the brain.

I did a photo trip and it was truly an amazing time

Africa is a great experience and it is cheap once you are in country.

I'm a Ambien Zombie, I can't take it. I've had instances where I walked and talked with other people for an hour or more while unconscious on Ambien.

I travel internationally half a dozen times or more a year so I'm used to it. I used my airmiles for our airline tickets so we have the lay flat business/first class seats all the way, we should be able to sleep.

I went out this morning to verify my zero on my hunting load. I just shot three rounds off the bench without looking between shots, although it is hard not to notice the .375 caliber holes using 8X at 100 yards.

My standard load still shoots as it's supposed to. The cold barrel shot was bottom left, the next shot right next to it and the third shot at the top.

Friday morning I leave LAX for Namibia and I'm stuck here in Texas. I'm hoping to finish up tomorrow and grab the evening flight to LAX and then drive home to Bakersfield.

That leaves me two days to pack everything up to leave on Thursday for Lompoc to pick up my hunting partner. Of course I have to work Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sitting in the United Polaris lounge at LAX waiting for the 4:55 boarding to London. It took us an hour to get the guns checked in. A combination of a ticket clerk who had never checked in guns for overseas and me writing tomorrow's date on the firearms declaration tag inside the gun case
