Its pretty to look at and use but doesn't seem to be an investment grade piece of metal. Same goes for bone china.

That being said, I wouldn't mind owning some sterling silverware, china, and cut crystal settings for 8. I know it would never be sellable if I needed it however.
Guess I shoulda been more clear. I plan to buy used. ex 1.2oz salad fork goes for about $30 shipped. Maybe 3 piece set for 4 people. Not exactly a life changing investment. But non the less a couple hundred dollars spent on sterling instead of rounds.

I mean, I guess if you just want to have sterling silver on hand. I don't see any advantages to regular silver; say you want to trade or sell the silver. You now have to explain its sterling, hope they pay some kinda price per ounce for the silver and still make some kinda profit on your fork. As opposed to a regular bar of .999 pure silver.

Yeah I mean whatever makes you happy. I'd like to own some sterling silverware for fancy stuff, but I never expect it to hold value or have any kind of significant resale.

You CAN buy good quality USED sterling silverware at the prevailing resale price (which is going to be higher than scrap silver prices but not as high as buying something brand new).

At that price, it'll "hold its value," at least as well as any other silver product whose value is based primarily on silver melt price.

It's not a great investment, but sometimes, the missus wants what she wants.

If it matters : AMARK Metals for today 24 Dec 18 Gold $ 1268.60/$ 1269.30 &
Silver $ 14.76/$ 14.80 on their website today. Directly opposite what most
metals sites advertise for silver these days.

Just curious if any of bought silver to actually use daily vs lock away.
As far as I know the knives are hollow handles, filled with epoxy/resin/some-cement and the blades are stainless.

HMMM, SO IT HAS... $14.20 to $15.34...
I don't know what I was looking at before, but the last few years it appears to jump up as the end of Dec. progresses into Feb., then a wild hog ride...

Gold $1302.84
Silver $15.70

How are everyone's predictions holding up? This thread has been going on for almost 6 years. I wonder how the market has performed against what people predicted would happen?

I predicted the price of gold and silver may have gone up or down or stayed the same. What do I win?

Hindsight is always 20/20, wish I bought more of it 10 years ago instead of "i'll wait until it drops 50 cents" or "I'll wait until its at $xx.xx before buying a million ounces". Those days came and went, and i had to buy higher than I previously intended.

My first prediction already happened. My second will come about as interest rates rise and stabilize.

I keep hearing that; interest rates are going to rise back to the 90s levels of 14% and that'll mess everything up. Glad I have my mortgage rate locked in, but wouldn't high interest just increase the steady rise of PM prices? Instead of 10 cents per fiscal quarter, maybe it'll go up $1?

I can't see interest rates rising very fast or high. But they will go up. Once they hit a point people can live off them again, other "safe" investments & hedges will fall further out of favor.

I'm sure a ton of viewpoints have been covered in this thread over the years. Your personal circumstance, risk tolerance etc. all play huge into what's good for you and your money. There's no one size fits all.

Well been eating off sterling since about the first of the year. It's a lot more fun having sterling flatware and using it every day than buying rounds that haven't seen the light of day in years. And the price was right, free handy downs. I really only have a few pieces but that's enough to use every meal.

The Gorham stuff I have goes for about $25 a piece on ebay. I plan to buy a few more. Actual silver weight varies by piece but not a terrible premium and kinda fun.

While I have not ever bought gold or silver I was intrigued a few years ago and started following this thread, and silver was about $35. Glen Beck et.al. were on the radio pushing buy, buy, buy saying it would go higher.

Please note I'm not a fan of Beck, but he gets sponsors and does their bidding like any other show. I can't fault him for taking a sponsors money and telling people to buy a product.

Only the people that sold @under what they bought at really lost so far...
Just because your house isn't worth what you paid for it, you don't lose money, unless you walk away, or sell it at the lower value...

It'll go back up. When? Nobody knows... maybe during the next election?

For 20 years the trend is still up (even 30, it just took longer)...

Yeah but experts think gold could go as high as $8000 or higher in the near future! I bought the book and it says so!

Understood, but it does go to show that one should never take financial advice from radio talking heads.

Do you give away your PMs to family as presents?

I give my kids one of my silver eagles or maples for each tooth and a 1/10th ounce of gold for every tenth tooth. I figure I am keeping it in the family and they are not allowed to spend it until they finish college.

Plus that is about the only use for the four 1/10 ounces I was stupid enough to buy.

Do you gift out your PMs to family?

All the time.
I just gave some Marvel super hero rounds to my son and future son in law.
I gave a couple of rounds out to the crew that just painted my house because they did the job well and got it done quickly.

They're great gifts!

Surely they still sell because of the price of a single ounce of gold, but I wouldn't buy fractions; you pay a huge premium (multiply the fraction out to a full ounce) and you'll never use the thing to buy anything or barter. It just doesn't make sense for me to buy fractions. But like TheChief said; you can give smaller fractions to kids as gifts and they'll cherish it more than my 1+ ounce investment mindset.
