You are incorrect. What that recent restriction on import did was restrict any radios sold as “FRS compliant” to not have 1) ability to transmit on GMRS repeater inputs, and 2) any removable antenna (so the antenna gain cannot be increased, thereby making radiated power violate the FRS limits). That was mostly fallout of having the FRS frequency list expanded to align to all 22 channels including the GMRS channels but FRS still carries different power limits, so to restrict radios with no licensing to that power limit you have to also restrict antenna gain. The Baofeng UV5R and similar variants are not sold as Part 95 (FRS) compliant, they are not restricted to that limitation even though they are capable of transmitting on those frequencies. ![]() The upgraded baofeng two button mic (for UV-82) actually works fine with UV-5R and others. One button works, other does nothing. Better sound and mic than the cheaper one originally for UV-5R. GLAARG says that in the description but I did login with two devices and the reviewers were confused why hahah. They only wanted one. They do a pretty thorough review of your room, asking to see slow sweep angles around the room, floor ceiling etc. but yeah once they agree you just share your screen and have camera on your face while testing through the exam tools website. Was easy and smooth and done in 10 minutes total. +1 here, I have several and they are a better choice than the Nagoya 771 which is often recommended, it’s fine but the signalstick is better.
