When/ Will SHTF??
So with everything going on these days ( health care reform, bailouts, housing/ commercial market, layoffs, hints of attacks on 2nd amendment, terrorist) do you think we will ever see a SHTF scenario? If so what do you think will be the tipping point? gooberment? economy? natural disaster? something else?
I don't think anyone can deny that there has been more and more talk about this in the last year. Even by people you wouldn't expect it from. I have even found myself stocking up on food, water and supplies. Just want to know everyone elses thoughts.

Based entirely on conjecture and wild-a**ed guesses, I put the chances of:
Banking crisis SHTF at 2% through 2011 Political SHTF at 3% through 2012 Energy crisis SHTF at 3% through 2019 Natural disaster SHTF at ?? 8+% chance of SHTF in the next ten years is way, waaaay too high to not make some preparations.

The big one hits. The part of California that I live in breaks off into an island and floats away. SHTF. The rest of California rejoices because the liberal Bay Area just fell away from the rest of the state.

We all have our road warrior fantasy scenarios but I'd like them to stay in fantasyland. Hopefully the sh** will flush smoothly down the toilet and not go flying into the fan. Everybody is talking about buggin out and TEOTWAWNI like they're going to be badass Mad Max/Bear Grylls when it happens...ya right. Pray it doesn't happen.

+1 - I personally rate the road-warrior every-man-for-himself scenario as extremely remote. Bad earthquake or flood? Virtually guaranteed. Be ready for the event itself, but more importantly, the aftermath (i.e. beyond your BOB).

gun owners talk about shtf because it gets them exited. same reason they like zombie related stuff. people who see this market to gun owners. dont believe me? have you seen survival related stuff in the gun store or just guns?...

Trust me, the idea of SHTF (and zombies, for that matter) does not excite me in the least. I joke about zombies, but that's because pop cultures have made them such an easy (and amusing) target. But if S does HTF, I'll be happy that I spent some time backpacking around in the backwoods and forests with my dad as a kid.

But thats just it! Most of us already have spent a lot of time camping and hunting. We already know how to live in survival scenarios. I just hate that this idea is so marketable and pumped up by gun owners specifically. Most survivalists say "Buy buy buy!"

There are, of course, limits. The extent of my advance preparation probably goes no more than what I could carry on my person. Survivalists who are out there building entire bomb shelters to fill with MREs are pushing it too far.

I hope not but I try to be as prepared as I can be....just in case. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst seems to be good advice.

There are a lot of people who can survive in the wilderness...but, if some event occurred that required people to actually do it, you would see a lot more people in the woods, which would change the way you were originally able to survive...people would have to band together into gourps/tribes unless you are Rambo.
Your isolated, lonely foraging grounds would be overrun in the event of a societal changing event that achieved anarchy. |

People can survive in the woods. In a shtf secenario how does one get into the woods if roads are blocked or destroyed or littered with vehicles. I know if I want to north or east there are established check points. Lets hope it never happens, I would to have to cart around a newborn.

The way I see it, I'm totally screwed anyway, so let the SHTF already.
I live in the burbs, too poor to own a bugout retreat, married to a girly-girl that wouldn't dream of sqatting in the forest, my kids already think I'm a tinfoil for talking about SHTF scenarios. So anything other than a natural disaster, I'm just going to set up my beltfed in the living room, surround myself with 20K of ammo and wait for the zombies to come. |

Lol, you guys and your SHTF stuff.
For those of us who live in major metropolitan areas like the Bay Area or Los Angeles/San Diego, we're screwed. A true SHTF situation will be instantaneous and gives us no time to "bug out". If you've got enough time to load all your crap... errr survival gear in your car and go drive 3-5 hours to the hills it's not SHTF for you. An inconvenience, sure but not SHTF IMO. If you survive the aftermath of a SHTF event, and need to bug out, you'll be joining thousands of other refugees heading to "the hills, our savior!" and many will be needing equipment and will band together to stone/shoot/knife/club you to death regardless of your AR-15/AK47/et al. Once you're dead and they've got your gear, they'll go after each other so they can have all the gear they just looted from your cooling corpse. Or if you're a super-stealth-ninja, you make it to the hills only to have to avoid locals and other survivalists while having to travel further and work harder to find food. One Second After gives a good example of this. People have been worrying about catastrophic SHTF events for a very long time. I recall a History Channel documentary on a group of religious extremists who thought the world was supposed to end at midnight sometime in the 1800's or early 1900's. They gathered in a park with some big rock where the preacher/main guy stood and prayed all night long and into the next day. Nothing happened. The year 2000. A bunch of bummed out survivalists were suddenly worried about how to consume or salvage months worth of nasty freeze dried food. I'll bet that 2012 stuff will be the same.

All empires crumble. Will it happen tomorrow, maybe, maybe not. If you are a father/husband, if you have responsiblities, people who depend on you, then you have the responsibility to be prepared. It is for better to have try'd, than not. No matter what your plan may be. Any plan is better than none. Don't be one of the millions of dumb founded dip sh#ts.

Living in an earthquake prone region, my SHTF scenario will probably be secondary to a natural disaster.

If people can't afford to buy food or keep themselves warm due to the dollar being utterly destroyed, expect rioting and lawlessness.
And IF this does happen, expect a period of restructuring where, god help us, violence could take place. Scary to think of, but the USA has never been in a situation like this before and if you follow the dollar, it has been tanking pretty severely over the past 6 months. I believe its down 12-13%... in 6 months. Nearly every day the dollar is down against major currencies. The stock market and big banks are doing well, but how can they not when they have easy money from the Federal Reserve's 0% interest rate. And with the worlds dollar reserves being expelled and the oil traders moving away from the dollar, all those trillions and trillions of greenbacks will be flooding back into our markets expecting to be exchanged for items of value. This can only cause more destruction of the dollar and more inflation. Every great empire has risen and fallen due to an unsustainable militarism and the welfare state. What makes people think that the USA couldn't do the same? Like I said, IF this happens... but even IF this doesn't happen, expect a period of extreme inflation. Like any possible SHTF scenario, it is never a bad idea to invest in commodities like cigarettes, wine, canned food, ammo, lead, copper, silver, gold, ect... |
