Default Traded for a Rossi R92 and did...some things

Been wanting a R92 45 Colt carbine and traded into one last month. The more I looked at it the more it reminded me of a Daisy Red Ryder with the Red stock and handguard so I busted out the Citristrip and let it work...while it was apart I went ahead and dumped the firing pin safety and replaced the follower with a stainless one.

I used Birchwood Casey stuff - Walnut stain and Tru-Oil. Full strength stain and 6 very thin coats of Tru-oil followed by a "smoothing" using 000 steel wool to give me the satin finish. Happy how it turned out. Now to make it to a MLC outing and get it all dirty

In the Beginning...

Midpoint...

Finished product...

That looks good!

I have 2 Rossi 92s, and fortunately neither was orange. One is a pre-safety model with the non-buckhorn rear sight and the other is a later model with the safety and buckhorn rear sight. I have been happy with them but I am planning on replacing the safety on the newer model with the Steve's Gunz peep sight.

There aren't really any MLC group outings...at least not yet.

That's a good one. Have you shot it yet?

I used some Jasco varnish & Stain remover on the last Rossi I refinished. It's the only one of the 5 I did that actually accepted a dark stain, hec, it's the only one that accepted any stain. That Brazilian Mystery wood is tough.

Oh, that's a major improvement over what it was. Nice work, OP.

Man you guys do nice work, I refinished a AK pistol front grip because I hated the blonde wood. It looks better but nothing like your work, but hell it’s just an AK don’t want it too pretty. Ha ha

Default Great guns

Maybe a little rough, but fun and easy to stow for camping trips.

That's a definite improvement over the original.

I remember refinishing a Ruger 10/22 and keeping in its natural light colored blonde Birchwood (I believe is what they were using at that time).
It looked really good contrasting against the black receiver, black barrel band, black buttstock and black trigger guard.
It all really made the light wood pop.
I don't know how it would look on any other rifle but the biggest benefit was it didn't look like any other Ruger 10/22 rifle, way back when I did it, many many years ago.

Congratulations on making your rifle your own style and thank you for sharing it with us.

Huh? have you seen/handled a Rossi R92? The metal/action is not "a little rough" and I will assure you the wood is as smooth as a babies bottom.

Ya, my stainless r92 in 357 is anything but rough. I'm VERY happy with it. Smoother than my 1894c.

AirCav - I would not recommend sanding the stock to remove the finish and stain. Use citristrip as directed and it does the work for you with little chance of sanding down the stock to the point it no longer fits properly....
