Wow you were issued a 2.5" model 10? That was super rare, I believe only under special contract those were made. Cool old school duty ammo!

Any of the third gen Smiths are a great replacement, unfortunately they are all Off-Roster but you can still find them on the Private Market. If you can't find another 5906, then look into a 5903, 5904, 5905, 910, 915 or look for a 2nd gen 459, 559, or 659. Any of these models are great pistols from Smith, happy hunting.

S&W 64 2”, transition to S&W 6906 same academy on my own time. 2001 S&W 5906 TSW. 2004 H&K USP40C. Department issued S&W MP40- declined. 2013 Glock series approved at GEN4 to present 17, 19X, 22, 43, 43X, 45 MOS…. Standard issue is presently Glock 19 Gen5 if you don’t buy your own…

Started with a S&W Model 19, 4" blue steel, with issued 38 Special rounds. Then went to S&W Model 59. We got a new Sheriff who allowed us to carry anything we could qualify with, so I went to a 1911 in 45acp. Finally, the Department mandated the Glock Mod 22 & 23. I carried it the longest, and disliked it the most.

First issued a S&W 4" barrel .38 revolver, neutered to be double action only. Then went to a Beretta 92, then a S&W 4506, then retired with a Glock 35 in my duty holster. That was over a span of 25.5 years, all uniform patrol, CRASH and SPU.
SPU is a Special Problems Unit, working crime patterns.

Our dept. was a bit strange in that we were issued a firearm that had probably been issued before but you could also carry any other APPROVED gun that you wanted Same with calibers. If you could qualify with it, you could use it. Department bought the ammo.
First issue were Model 10's and Model 19's. I carried the Model 19. When we were allowed to go to semi-autos and we were issued S&W5906 (not a good duty gun). I carried a Beretta 92. Then we were issued H&K 9mm USP-1. Great gun that I carried for SWAT because it had a light rail under the barrel. but I carried the Beretta 96 (40 cal) on duty because the Beretta fit my hand better.
Back then you could buy your own gun and deduct it as a business expense and when the Department issued a new model, they let you buy your old gun and the trade-in price. Good deal.

Curious why didn't you think the 5906 was a good duty gun? They were so well made, all steel with all steel parts, they're very reliable as well. Love those 3rd gen Smiths.

Well all Department training on Department time is free, it's directly Department related. I've never heard of an agency that issued ammo to anyone other than duty ammo to carry, which is usually just 50 rounds. It gets expensive beyond that for Departments, so any other ammo you wish to carry or train with personally would therefore come out of your pocket.

My agency issued reasonable amounts of extra training and duty ammo to those who requested it. Usually after a qualification shoot (4 times per year), those of us who liked to shoot could get three or four extra boxes of ammo to take with us. Two thousand rounds per month though? No way.

However, most officers did not do any extra training and many bragged that they only practiced when they got paid to, so the number of officers requesting extra ammo was low.

Also, in those days departments paid much less for ammo than today's prices. I think my department paid $3-4 a box for .38 wadcutters back in the day and not a whole lot more for 9mm or .40.

Oh that's awesome that your agency would give you guys extra duty and training ammo upon request. I just figured it would be too costly to from a department standpoint, but yeah times change.

Lapd 1995 - issued Beretta 92FS. Shot it well but never liked the double/single action trigger. 649 revolver was my backup. S&W 4513 (I think) off duty.

Lots of OGs still carrying revolvers during this time.

After the North Hollywood shooting they let us transition to 45’s so I purchased a Smith & Wesson 5916. Had some problems with failure to feeds. Something about the feed ramp being too steep in this model.
Still carried 649 for back up and 4513 off duty.


Switched to Glock once they became available. Started off with a gen3, G22 in .40 and carried a G27 off duty and as back up. I liked the Glock and upgraded to a gen 4 G22 when they came out. Carried that combo for many years but I never shot the .40 as well as the 9mm but at the time it was believed to be a better round than 9mm.

When they started to issue M & P’s to recruits, I heard a lot of great things about them so I switched to the M&P Pro (full size) in 9mm, which is a very nice gun that I could “drive tacks” with. I also switched my back up and off duty to a Shield 9mm, which was ok but not my favorite.

Lapd was always very restrictive when it came to what we could carry but I hear now they are approving a lot more, including optics.


Now I’m retired so I can carry whatever I want. Still have most of the above but I mostly carry and shoot Sigs now. EDC is Sig P365 Spectre Comp. What a great gun! It’s no bigger than my old S&W 4513 but instead of 6 + 1, it’s 15+1 which is pretty amazing. I also sometimes carry a P320 Xcompact.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Ithaca shotguns. What a piece of junk lol but they worked. We later moved to Remington 870’s. I purchased my own 870 with all the goodies once they let us buy our own.

When they started the UPR program (urban police rifle) I was issued a Vietnam era AR rifle but ended up buying my own Colt 6940.

Every single one of those guns I had to buy myself except for the Beretta, which I also had to buy when I retired. I want to say it was $75 or something.

Lots of guns, lots of rounds, lots of (mostly) fun.

JB, our paths probably crossed. I was a Senior Lead Officer in the '90s at Central. I liked the Ithaca model 37 because I shoot long guns left-handed and its "shotgun" safety was ambidextrous. Got issued an 870 slug gun, but still wished the Ithacas were available.

Started in LE in 1974 as a Reserve. We had to supply our own gear. I carried a S&W Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel. Went regular a year later and my parents gave me a 4" Colt Python as an academy graduation gift. Still have the Python. No idea where the Smith went.

Lateralled to another agency and they issued the 1911 in .45. They allowed us to carry our own guns though. I continued to carry the Python until James Hoag had completed full customization on a Colt Combat Commander that I carried in uniform until I retired. Shot Master (our highest classification) with it consistently.

That agency later started issuing the H&K USP in .45, I took one, but never carried it. I hated the gun. It felt as if it needed wheels.

When working UC I sometimes carried a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44 Spl.

My employer issued the Federal 110gr SJHP .38 +P+ “Treasury load” for the longest time before going to the Beretta. Seeing your Federal box of 158gr +P reminds me that I still have about 3 unopened boxes of the +P+ 110gr version, which were packaged in the same colored boxes. I carried them in a stainless 640 back-up gun, until we went with the Speer gold dot .38 +P’s. I also used to use the Treasury loads for coyotes out of a Winchester ‘94 Trapper lever gun.

I also have 3 unopened boxes of the old 9mm 115gr Winchester Silvertip HP’s. I know the FBI poo-poo’d those rounds, but they actually worked nicely for the technology of their day. The FBI just didn’t hit the ENOUGH vitals back in Miami in 1986, so they “fired” that otherwise pretty effective round.

LAPD reserve 1980-2010.

Was issued a 4" S&W in the academy (Model 15?). I quickly transitioned to a 4" Colt Diamondback in .38 Spl. I carried it for 30 years until I had to resign for medical reasons.

Smith and Wesson Model 15 with 4” barrel was my issue gun in 1978, but starting in 1980 I carried a Model 66 with a 4” barrel in patrol until the Beretta conversion in 1988. I carried the blue steel and Inox Berettas for years until I went with an H&K P2000 the last couple of years. I also carried an M&P 9 and M&P 9 compact, depending on my assignment at the time. I still own all of those guns.

I started in 1987 and was issued a 6" Model 66 as all jail Deputies were. After having my 66 try to disassemble itself on the range during qualification - it wasn't a pinned barrel and the barrel began unscrewing from the frame, not a good experience - I was issued a 4" 66. I carried that until our Sheriff finally caved in on semi-autos. My first carry semi-auto was a personal Smith 645 with a Smith 3913 and 3906 as off-duty guns. When the Department decided that we could only carry 9MM or .40 on duty, I switched the 3906 and 645 (I was a lot skinnier in those days and could get away with the 645 off-duty). I later became a Rangemaster, and when I did, I accepted an issued Glock 22 2nd Gen as that's what new Deputies were required to carry, no more personal guns unless grandfathered. I carried that until I retired. My department did not sell duty guns to retiring Deputies... no great loss as by that time I had a purchased a Glock 17 Gen 3 - wow, a light rail!

While working as a Rangemaster, I intercepted one of the folks from LC Action coming down the hall in Admin with a shopping cart full of the Department's old Smith Model 19s that had been traded in to buy those Glocks... pointing at the two best looking out of the pile, I told him that I'd take those two. I paid $129 for each IIRC which was probably what the Department got in trade-in for them. Sold one later, I still have the other in my safe. I still have several boxes of the Winchester 110 +P+ that was the issue ammo for the revolvers.

We carried Colt, Armalite and Bushmaster ARs in the cars along with Remington 870s. The 870s were later relegated to Less Lethal duty.

Just retired in July. P series sigs. Carried a p226 for a few years, switched to a p229 (all in .40). Was issued a P365 for UC work. I also carried a j frame for some UC stuff and a BUG on patrol. When I retired the department had switched to a sig p320 AXG in 9mm.

NYPD 1968 S&W Model 10 4" 38spl. Off duty was a S&W 2" Detective Special 38 spl. Wish i hadnt sold the model 10 when I retired. Still have the off duty.

1968-1981. Retired due to on the job car wreck. Stopped at an accident scene. Got hit by an 83 yr old in a B-I-G Oldsmobile.
So I tell people "Old age forced me to retire".

My take on what he meant was we’re more “militarized” these days. Semi-auto, agencies running RMRs, cutouts on slides for better recoil management, brakes/comps on rifles, IR/PEQ, rifle plates in our vests, etc.

To rebut that point, we have to change with the times. It’s not that LE is more “militarized,” bit rather we have to adapt to be able to continue to do our job safely and effectively.

Just seems to me they had a lot more respect in the old days. Not knocking policeman today but no one in there right mind would shout things at a cop in the old days and not get a tune up on the street right then. I personally think it needs to go back to those ways its crazy for these guys today. Im just amazed seeing cops with rifles today old days pistol and wooden night stick and you didn't open your mouth unless asked to speak
