Vehicle Carrying Ammunition, Firearms Catches Fire After Colliding With Big Rig On 5
A car carrying ammunition and weapons started a brush fire after crashing into a big rig on the 5 freeway, prompting the closure of all southbound 5 Freeway lanes north of Santa Clarita.
Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, emergency responders received reports of a crash on the southbound 5 freeway at Templin Highway in Angeles Forest north of Castaic,, which spread into a small brush fire that has been stopped, according to officials on scene.
“There was a vehicle engulfed in flames and a small spot brush fire,” said Melanie Flores, a dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “CHP advised that there is ammo and firearms inside the vehicle.”
As of 5:10 p.m., officials had not received reports of any injuries.
“We’re keeping the squad and ambulance just to confirm that there are no injuries,” Flores said.
As of 5:15 p.m., all lanes of the southbound 5 freeway at Templin Highway are closed as crews work to fully extinguish both the brush and vehicle fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
