Spyderco Yojimbo 2
My carry knife is the Spyderco Yojimbo 2 here in CA. Personally I prefer fixed blade knives like the Spyderco Ronin and the Cold Steel Pro Guard Neck Knife. I find it strange like in Pennsylvania where folders are illegal but fixed blades are legal to carry the exact opposite of California. To me the fixed blades are safer to carry and easer to deploy if ever needed however I highly doubt California law makers care about the safety of their citizens. Another favorite fixed blade is the Cold Steel Master Tanto in a horizontal carry behind the back. I also have a CRKT Dragon's Claw fixed blade I liked to carry in a front cross draw carry. When I lived in Pennsylvania and in Arkansas I had a CCW and carried a .45 as well as multiple knives so I had choices if the need arose. It never did which is a good thing but it is better to have choices and not need them than need them and not have them. Arkansas has quite liberal knife carry laws. I'm quite partial to Warncliff style blades as I believe they give the maximum cutting surface for the length. My second choice are Tanto style blades due to their armor piercing points. I also have a dagger designed to penetrate soft body armor the same type Richard Davis the original developer of soft body armor and original owner of Second Chance Body Armor used in his demonstrations of how to penetrate his competitors "Knife Proof" body armor with the afore mentioned dagger.

I have couple YOII's... great knife and super smooth. That's the only Spyderco I feel comfortable using the index finger under to deploy - that's enjoyable. Wicked slicer, weak tip even for a Spyderco. I love the Centofante3 too. Not a huge fan of the FRN style with no adjustable pivot (rivet) but that one is the exception. I have one of the CS 6" 3V Master Tantos... great quality on those. CS seems to do a great job whether it is $30 or $300. |

The Socialist Republic of California
My Cold Steel Master Tanto is a San Mai of the original run. I like its grip, balance and the skull crusher pummel. I have had it for a long time and it is my favorite blade. To bad the Progressive Idiots will not allow its carry here is Progressive Hell. They are so scared their citizens might be effectively protected. Here in L.A County unless you are rich or powerfully connected your life does not count with elected officials. Of course unless you are illegally in the country then your rights trump native born American citizens rights.

Concealed carry is what I was refering to.

It is my understand that concealed carry of the fixed blade knives I prefer is illegal in California. Openly carrying such knives defeats the purpose of carrying such knives and invites you to surprise attacks by criminals. |

Fixed blades are not illegal to carry in CA. Concealed fixed blade would be, but not carrying on your backpack strap or belt. I have a morakniv companion on my mountain bike pack, day pack, and road bike pack and not one issue with park rangers or police.

I'm not worried about that type of carry but when I'm on a street with a bunch of seedy characters that look like they run in packs looking for prey. That is when I would like a concealed fixed blade like a Spyderco Ronin or my Cold Steel Master Tanto San Mai under my shirt ready to draw fast if needed. Augmenting my martial arts they could make a real difference rather than trying to draw out a folder and deploying it. It is simply a safety factor. I carried a .45 and multiple fixed blades for many years. I never needed them thanks God but it was quite nice having them in case I ever did. I'm not one of those that look for trouble but go out of my way to avoid it. I have been in several situations I could have legally used deadly force but I allowed the situation to de-escalate because I had the overwhelming tactical advantage. I was prepared to use what ever force was needed but I allowed the instigator to ratchet down and walk away knowing I had the drop on him. He could not see what my hand was on as I kept my body between him and my weapon. That gave me the edge I needed. If he had gone for a weapon it would have been the last mistake he made on this earth. I practiced a lot and could take a turtle's head off from a holstered draw at 20 yards. If in knife range I trained to cut the weapons hand wrist to the bone, weapons arm brachial artery, and weapons side carotid artery in rapid succession. I would not assume someone is a Leftist from a few posts. I had assumed the opposite, not that I gave it much thought. I get chapped when someone from out of state comes in lecturing us poor saps, etc... or when I suspect someone is just a Leftist up to no good on the gun forum. Mostly though, think what you want... and if you say something stupid, things will sort themselves out - either people cut you slack and give grace or they piss on your cheerios. |

If you don't like my posts then stop reading them! You obviously can't handle them. I have every right to state my opinion which you are not capable of handling. I called out no one, you are just not capable of understanding and are too thin skinned to tolerate any opinion but your own. No one said anything about killing anyone but you cretin. California already strips a person of all rights (and dignity) except illegal aliens and pot smokers. You already conceal your brains in an undisclosed location.

For me, one of the common themes for out-of-state people lecturing poor Calgunners is the fact that they almost always seem to make totally incorrect assumptions about what we'd get riled up about and what we do not get emotional enough about or need to be schooled on. The group in general knows what's up - definitely better than an out-of-stater who is pissed about the 1970's. Honestly, leftists are really easy to spot here (if they post). I haven't seen any lately but I haven't been looking. |

Crufflers, Linehand131 started this fight by attacking me and telling me to go away. No one has to read my posts and as I said in the post that Linehand131 was sooooo offended by "Yes, I know I am free to leave and will as soon as I can convince my wife to do so!"
As a senior member I also noted you did not object to Linehand131 telling me "The only place you’ll be concealing a blade is up your ignorant a** in Corcoran State Prison". Where was your telling him about moderation and decorum or does that only apply to out-of-staters that have moved into California? I surely would not want to be accused of lecturing you. I've only been on the planet going on 68 years soon to be 69 on Dec. 23rd and know absolutely nothing. It is very interesting how disingenuous you are about allowing Linehand131 to attack me without any correction while choosing to point out what you don't like what I post. It seems on face value somewhat hypocritical on your part. As a former moderator myself I welcome a moderator cooling off the hypertension in these posts just as long as there is equal justice imposed I am cool with it. I did not ask to be attacked or the continued attacks. Last edited by Paparock; 09-11-2018 at 6:54 PM.. |

Thanks for the welcome! I appreciate it and I do sincerely mean that. Yes, I am a grumpy old fart especially since I have moved to California. I have a lot of experience carrying a gun and knives and some strong opinions on what I like to carry and why so by many years of doing it. It irks me when a bunch of politicians that don't know their head from their a**holes legislate my safety out of pure ignorance and political agenda! I value my life more than that and California law enforcements response times are not able to protect people. I started this thread talking about what I carry in California and what I wish I could carry and why as I have carried in multiple states. Then I get this jerk Linehand131 attacking me and that he hopes I go to prison and have my knives shoved up my a**. All because I don't like California laws which is anyone's right. So very tolerant of him, NOT! If you can't see California laws need changing to protect its citizens, in my view at least, you have blinders on. The guy above me, in my apartment complex, has beaten his wife three times in the last year with multiple people including me calling in because of the screaming and threats of the use of a knife and there has been no action taken and no follow up by the investigating officers with those that called in as I was one and I know others that called in and they have also not been contacted for follow up. But its only been nine months so maybe they will eventually get a round to it. So I'm not impressed with the Sherriff's Department handling of the multiple incidents and lack of follow up. No, what did you hear, no, what was said, etc. etc.. They were so loud people were running up from the building 100 yards away to see the apartment number to call 911. I started carrying a gun, knives, and the predecessor to the ASP as the guy that came out with it was in my platoon shortly after I left back in 1973. I met him at the National Police Chief's Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul where I was a factory rep. for Second Chance Body Armor. We were talking and discovered he had been in the same Drug Suppression Unit on Okinawa and had joined it only a few months after I had left the Island. I was the Officer that had purchased the collapsible metal batons for my unit from the Okinawan Police and it was from those he later developed the modern day Asp batons. Small World. I have been carrying firearms and knives according to the laws where I live ever since I was discharged in 1973? How long have you been carrying? |

Spydercos are certainly not cheap and if you are happy with what you have more power to you. The Gerber Mk I (I have one also) will go through soft body armor like a hot knife through butter if you know the technique. The inventor of soft body armor (Richard Davis) taught it to me while I was a rep. for Second Chance Body armor. Richard used one to drive through both the front and back panels combined of competitors "Knife Proof" vests! I still have a video around the house here somewhere of him doing that. That is something I am not going to put on an open form considering it would put Law Enforcement lives in danger. I was just wondering were you were coming from. Now I know. Thanks for the reply. I would appreciate it if you would make some of your posts a little clearer. Is it or is it not illegal to carry fixed blades concealed in California? For fixed blades (known as a dirk or dagger), or a folding knife in the open and locked position, they must be carried “openly”. California Penal Code section 16470 classifies a dirk or dagger as a knife or instrument with or without a hand guard that is capable of ready use as a stabbing weapon that may inflict great bodily injury or death. Per the penal code there is no length limit as long as it is carried openly. A knife carried in a sheath that is worn openly suspended from the waist of the wearer is considered open carry and is legal. Penal code section 20200. Carrying a concealed dirk or dagger is illegal pursuant to Penal Code Section 12020(a)(4). Los Angeles Code section 55.01 also makes it illegal to carry any weapon concealed on one’s person. As such, in Los Angeles, you can’t openly carry a blade over 3″, but you can’t carry such a weapon concealed, either. Interestingly, the Courts have held that the Los Angeles law forbidding carrying a concealed weapon is invalid. In the 1968 case of People v. Bass, a man was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed folding knife. The Court of Appeals overturned the conviction, holding that the Los Angeles law conflicted with the state law, and was therefore invalid. Nonetheless, the Los Angeles law is still on the books. What is even more interesting is that other, more recent cases completely contradict the decision in People v. Bass. In the 1985 case of People v. Gerardoi, the defendant was charged with violating a local law of the City of Commerce that is nearly identical to the Los Angeles local law prohibiting carrying blades over 3″. On appeal, the defendant cited the Bass case, arguing that the city code was invalid. The Gerardoi court rejected the holding of Bass, and found that the city code was valid. Where does all this information leave us? The short answer is, in a mess. There are certainly things that are illegal: any switchblade with a blade 2″ or longer, or concealed possession of any knife with a fixed blade. Other knives may or may not be legal, depending on how and where you carry them, and where you are in California. The best this to do is to check local ordinances before deciding to carry a knife or any other weapon in California. Better yet, think twice before carrying a knife. As you know, some cops look for any excuse to hassle bikers. Last edited by Paparock; 09-13-2018 at 2:58 PM.. |

No doubt laws in California are a nightmare. Here is the answer to your question. In California it is legal to carry a fixed blade knife on your person as long as it is not concealed. If it is concealed on your person it is illegal. I have no knowledge on the local laws in L.A. I have always avoided that part of the State like it has the plague.
I'm not sure I agree with your hassle bikers statement. It should be some cops look for any excuse to hassle people they think should be hassled. I never had that problem. I always made it clear to bikers and everyone else that I would never be a problem to them as long as they didn't break the law. If they broke the law I would deal with them. That included some high ranking angels that lived in my area. |
