Need advice, budget 1000 yard LR build.
Gents,
I am putting together a budget long range rifle, a Remington 700 LR in 30-06. I have purchased the rifle, now I am looking at optics options. I have looked the SWFA line SS, very nice scopes and fits the budget nicely. I would like to get my first FFP scope but the least expensive one in the SWFA is $699. I was looking at the Athlon line of scopes, and was very impressed. My budget is between $300-$550. Not much A2 |

i don't own one but was seriously contemplating this model before the money ran out. Supposed to be a good value scope.
Athlon Optics Argos BTR 6-24x50mm Riflescope, Adjustment Click Value: 0.1 Mil Rad Reticle: APMR FFP IR MIL. It runs about $370 dollars, you can often find a 10% off coupon and free shipping on Optics Planet bringing it down to around $333. Don't forget, you'll need decent rings and perhaps a 20MOA base. I was considering getting the Burris Zee Signature rings that have the optional shims to adjust to 10 or 20 MOA, i think they run about $45 or so. That would bring your total to something like $380. I shot an athlon argos btr on a 22 for one match and made a deal to sell it to another shooter moments after the match was over. 5 mils per revolution and the turrets are about as mushy as it gets. I shot fine with it, but the turrets were enough to make me drop it. I was also only shooting a 22 to around 225 yards, a long way off from 1000. If budget is a top concern, the argos can probably get the job done, but don't expect it to excel in any category but price IMO.

I used to have a SWFA 5-20 that I was very happy with but I ultimately sold it in favor of another Vortex with the same reticle. In terms of quality, glass and turrets, I would not hesitate to run another SWFA. If your type of shooting will allow for it, don't rule out the SWFA fixed 10. You can probably pick up a used one on the hide for a song, and if/when you decide to upgrade you'll probably get most or all of what you paid for it. That said, you could probably do the same with the Athlon if you'd rather go for full features and from what I understand, their warranty is in line with Vortex and SWFA.. so if the scope tracks like chit they will probably take care of it for you.

Marines for many years shot 1000 yards with a crap Redfield 3-9x40mm. No Mil dot, no massive elevation adjustments, no 20 MOA rail, none of that.
I think the only option you have has already been mentioned but a decent scope suitable for LR will be a tall order in your price range. |
