Talking I have found the holy grail of MRE

I look forward to trying this during a hike. Also I now have 24 cases of menu A & B inspection date 2022. Not bad for $37 a case

The pizza is the hardest one to find! I heard in the military everyone grabs this one or they open the boxes and take this one first. It took 50 years for them to development it because the bread kept getting soggy from the sauce on the first few tests. I got them from this girl in the national guard who sells me the ones they force her to buy since she doesn't personally like them.

Second! That's a great price! I'm assuming that's local pickup, no shipping?

For me, it's about having a super long shelf life that requires very little maintenance and can be eaten with no prep or additional water.

I went through plans with canned foods, freeze-dry, bulk pack, you name it, then settled on MREs as the lowest maintenance for the long term. My 15 year old MREs are still edible, and I haven't had to do anything to keep them that way. I just replace the oldest cases when I get new ones.

Do they have downsides and limitation? Sure, lots, but they're ones I'm willing to accept for my specific plans.

YMMV, as always. Lots of choices out there for different circumstances.

Pizza MREs? Wow, they sure came a long way. When I was in the Marines, we got some of the first batches in 1985. Even filled out questionnaire forms about them for the food manufacturers.
Thanks to the blandness of those early ones, I became a fan of hot sauces. Tabasco, Cholula, Crystal, Frank's Red Hot, Tapatio, Sriracha, etc. Still to this day, I'm looking for new hot sauces.

The Maple Sausage Patty with accompanying maple pound cake they got now is breathtaking. My favorite one back in the day was the tuna noodle casserole, with a whole packet of cheese, all the crackers crumbled up, and like 2 or 3 mini-Tabascos. None of them (even the frankfurters) were that bad given enough Tabasco. Except for one. The only one that could instantly induce vomiting was the omelette. If you come across one of those just toss it.

Yes, as a relative newbie, last time I had anything remotely resembling MRE's was in the Boy Scouts in the 60's, it does seem they generate a lot of refuse for the amount of nutrition consumed. For field/emergency use I guess that's an acceptable tradeoff, at home I tend to go with things that are easily incinerated or their packaging can be repurposed/reused. Few conventional items compare in shelf life though, that's a real plus of MRE's.

Back when I was bicycle camping in the 80's and 90's what I did was bring dried foods designed for hikers and my small RO hand water pump and make my own usable water to drink and hydrate the food on the trail, along with a few fresh items that kept OK. Plenty fine for trips of a week or two, not a long term solution though, and it depended on having some sort of water available.

Then there's cost. If cost isn't an object, it gets simpler. Perhaps someday that'll be a factor off my mind, currently it's not, so foods that keep and are the most cost effective get attention and trial.

I’ve been buying MRE Star the past few year and they have a great setup with a heater snacks cookies candy coffee wet wipes and so on. I’ve tried a bunch and have to say it’s got everything included and actually taste good for a MRE. I’ve tried a bunch from friends of mine in the military had given me a few through out the years and they are great if your ever stuck and in need of food. But it would be great to see overall long term of which is best.

I don't think the OP is going to be as happy as he is now by the time he has eaten 4-cases and realizes that he has another 20 cases left!

Alas I have not eaten the pizza yet, every weekend been busy since but I did give 2 away to a 15 year old kid (likes to play army & wears cammo on the weekends) on his birthday a few weeks ago. I gave him some cheesy pasta one and the chili (ones that I didn't think I'd like and felt expendale ) but he actually dug em heaters and all. His dad helped him use the FRH. I will soon give these a shot

They need to have the little bottle of Tabasco.

My old MREs (2005-ish) all have this, but some of the newer ones I've tried have flexi packs for Tabasco - Sort of like soy sauce packets.

I'm assuming this is to reduce weight and change the trash profile. The little bottles are cooler, though.

Plastic packs are a lot cheaper than the mini glass bottles, although the bottles are way cooler. You can still buy the bottles in "6-packs" if there is a CostPlus nearby.
