The feds are saying that due to the huge response rate, the $125 is going to be dramatically reduced. My suggestion is to pick the free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance. It's a better deal over 4 years anyways and since that $125 might end up being $50, it's really a better deal.

Apparently so many applied that the settlement won’t actually be $125, according to the report out tonight.

Remember that $125 you could have gotten from the Equifax Inc. data-breach settlement? Yeah, never mind.

The Federal Trade Commission announced Wednesday that, due to an overwhelming response, cash payments aren’t going to be anywhere near $125 each, and urged consumers to sign up for the free credit monitoring offered as an alternative.

I can honestly say MOST class actions do NOT pay out the 'estimated' amount. I have had claims that were suppose to pay $188 but paid $20.21.

Gee, do the lawyers take less, too?

Fu<king class action settlements....what a crock. Only one entity gets paid....the law firm.

Thanks for the link. Looks like the free version gets you pretty skimpy coverage though. Only monitors one of three reporting agencies and no theft insurance unless you are AAA Premiere and then only $10k.

I get that it may be a better deal to take the credit monitoring service as a part of the settlement but I do NOT get why you'd want to receive credit monitoring service from the company that leaked your data in the 1st place.

I submitted a claim for the $125. While I'm on the list of those affected, I have not seen any evidence of any actual attempted misuse of my data. I've put a credit freeze on all of my credit reports. So, at least "theoretically" no one can misuse my credit data w/or w/o credit monitoring.

So, I'm just hoping to at least get $3 for a cup of coffee out of it. Anything more is pure gravy.

I submitted a claim for $125 and $212.5.

I doubt any of us will receive the $125 based upon news outlets covering the stories. Apparently, there has been overwhelming number of claims. And there is not enough to pay everyone $125. I think one estimated that we would receive $30.

As to the $212.50, that was actual time spend for having to clean up two instances where I was the victim of attempted identity theft.

In one case, they cleaned out my bank account for about $200. (A bunch of atm withdrawals for $74 and change). The bank covered the loss on that one.

On another, someone hacked my ebay and paypal and attempted to buy stuff. They put in the comments section of the order that they wanted the items shipped to my other address, because I was out of town. The target recipient address was a home where people were on vacation. Fortunately paypal thought it was suspicious and sent me a text message. (The $500 of stuff was not suspicious, but the $2.50 insurance was.)

Based on the number that have already filed and the agreed settlement amount - at this time they are estimating $7.50... it will likely go down as more file.

It's a waste of time - these class action suits always are.

I submitted a claim for $8 Bazillion. This way I'll likely get $125.
For those that submitted for $125, your payout will be $0.00000217.

You got greedy - adding that extra dollar was the kicker.

So, I just received an email from the "Equifax Breach Settlement Admininstrator" asking me to "verify or amend" my $125 settlement claim. I'm sure that others have already or will so receive the same email.

Basically, they are trying to steer all claimants away from the $125 and towards the "free" credit monitoring service w/all 3 agencies for 4 years plus an additional 6 years of "free" credit monitoring only w/Equifax after the 4 year/3 agency monitoring service expires.

If you choose to still claim the $125 (or whatever amount is ultimately distributed) in order to verify that claim, you have to provide the name of the credit monitoring service that you already used. Not sure why you need to have used a credit monitoring service in order to make the claim but, since I never have paid for a credit monitoring service before, my only option was to elect to get the 4/6 yr monitoring service offered or get nothing at all.

Just thought I'd give the rest of you a heads up so that you'll be aware of what they are doing.

I got the same email too. I'm thinking they don't want to pay so they are trying to force you take the credit monitor services. I did nothing and if I don't get $125 so be it. I never told them I used a credit monitor service.

I already verified everything in the original email , so again if I get nothing that's cool but i'm not just going to do what they ask.

Some banks offer free credit monitoring. During the initial filing
It asks if you currently have credit monitoring.

They are hoping enough people just do nothing. Lawyers keep more money.

Could be but to me the way the email is worded and from what I know I filled out me having a credit monitoring wasn't a factor so why is it now ? I think it's a gimmick and probably i'm wrong but i'm not doing it.

It has the feel of steering you away from whatever money is due , at least to me.

This was definitely an attempt to weasel out of paying out the $125. I just listed Credit Karma. I do use it from time to time.

Also got the email.

The thing is, there have been so many data breaches, and there will likely be more, so I’m pretty sure I will get “free credit monitoring” for the rest of my life.

I expect a check for $1.25 when all is said and done and the lawyers take their millions. Locked my credit. They will lose more money by us not using their services to buy things on credit.

Why don't we all file a class action settlement against this class action settlement?

“Free credit monitoring” from a place that can’t even monitor itself?

No thanks.

To get your $.39, you have to verify that you currently have some kind of credit monitoring.
Or, as said above, you can get free credit monitoring FROM THE INCOMPETENTS that leaked it in the first place.
Thank you government. Great deal.
