As far as I know, I wasn't affected by the Equifax breach but I froze all of my credit card reports anyway to avoid any possible future reporting "leaks." It's free; all you have to do is request it.

You don't need the reports anyway because all creditors use now is your credit score which cannot be blocked from release.

Update 7/29/19:

Just checked and my credit info apparently was affected by the breach and I filed a claim for $125. I checked it out and filed the claim here: https://eligibility.equifaxbreachset...en/eligibility. Later posts suggest that everyone may not get the full $125 if too many people file a claim for the $ but I don't need the credit monitoring and, since I apparently wasn't actually affected anyway, something will be better than nothing.

Thanks OP. Who knows when the checks will be sent out. It'll just have to be a nice surprise

Well, no ammo money for me.

Credit monitoring is free from most credit card companies on their apps, and free from credit karma.

I used to pay for lifelock, until I bought a house, then refinanced 2 years later, and opened 3 credit cards in that time- then realized I never received a call or alert or anything, so I stopped paying for it

My bank accounts were compromised back in Feburary 2018, not sure if it's related but I had all the documentations showing multiple unauthorized withdraws, closing and reopening accounts and credit cards.

You the best bro. I'm blaming every security breach on every account on them. I'm blaming all three of my debit cards that were compromised on them. I'm in for 20 hours and $300 in lost wages. Wish me luck!

Lol. Did you even see the form? It’s not asking for anything that’s not already available to anyone online. Name, address, phone, email and year of birth. Doesn’t even ask for social. But you keep wearing your tinfoil hat my dude.

https://www.creditkarma.com/

For anyone concerned with application line: "I certify that I have credit monitoring and will have it for at least 6 months from today." ...
...You can sign up for free credit monitoring at America's largest credit monitoring service Credit Karma, they do not ask for credit card info as they do not sell anything.
They (CK) make their money with emails to you with exciting offers on loans and new credit cards. But the obvious trick is to create yet another gMail or Yahoo email account to provide to CK in case you are not enamored with all their wonderful financial advertisements. You will forever get monthly credit score monitoring free from CK (along with their email adds). And you can honestly certify to the government you have credit monitoring for next 6 months on your settlement application.

Do you all realistically have faith, it's a $125 pay out?

Even if only 25% of the 147 million people claimed, they would be bankrupt. It's a split of the pool of who are jumping in. Not trying to burst the $125 bubble, but don't count your chickens yet... don't think the payout will even buy a nice chicken sandwich.

Only $31 million is set aside for the “up to $125” payments. So to get $125, less than 248,000 people have to sign up. If all people affected by the breach wanted the payment instead of the credit service, that would mean less than a quarter to everyone. So for some people 10-year credit monitoring with $1 million in insurance for identity theft might make a lot more sense.

"But the likelihood that you’ll actually get a check for $125 is increasingly slim — because the more people who sign up, the less money each person gets. In fact, there’s only room for 248,000 people to get that amount.

If 1 million people ask for the money, they’ll be eligible for just $31 each.

If every single one of the 147 million affected people sign up, they’ll be looking at 21 cents.

See, while Equifax has agreed to a $700 million settlement — compare to its revenue of $880 million last quarter alone — it’s technically only a $425 million settlement as far as affected consumers are concerned, with the rest of the money going to pay penalties."

That was somewhat my question.

The 'options' were:
$125 because I already have credit monitoring
Free credit monitoring

Lol, we will all be lucky to get $5. 147 million affected people and only $31 million to go around - do the math. Even if only 10% of the affected file claims, that leaves you with a whopping $2.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/31/ftc-...onitoring.html

FTC: Equifax might run out of cash, so please take the credit monitoring

Quote:
The FTC said Wednesday: “The public response to the settlement has been overwhelming. Because the amount of money set aside for the cash payment option is capped at $31 million, consumers who select that option may not receive the $125 they had expected.”
Quote:
The FTC released a notice Wednesday encouraging consumers rushing to get a $125 check from credit ratings agency Equifax as restitution for its 2017 breach should consider the credit monitoring option instead. That’s because an “overwhelming response” may mean Equifax runs out of money before satisfying all the claims.
Quote:
For consumers who have already chosen the cash option, the settlement administrator will e-mail those consumers and provide them with the opportunity to either (1) submit additional information, or (2) switch to the free credit monitoring service. Consumers can also contact the settlement administrator directly.”
The free ten year monitoring + insurance + remediation may be a much better deal.
