Nice!

I have a 1972 half mag and it's really accurate with the barnes 150 gr bullets, not so much with the hornady 140 lead free.

That era Marlin is drilled and taped for side mounted receiver sight. They are a little pricey but well worth it for accuracy!!

Congrats!

Thanks, smittty! I have a Lyman 66 that I bought for my .357, but that gun is fun with the semibuckhorn irons. I'm gonna put the Lyman on this Texan.

Good to hear about those Barnes'. Had planned to work on a load using those anyway. I avoid the glided-metal Hornady GMX; they're nothing but one solid bullet jacket.

Default New and Improved! With More! Pictures. Everyone loves pictures...

Brought this home yesterday and gave it a good cleaning, oiling and general going-over but did not disassemble it beyond a lever/bolt/ejector removal. I doubt if this Texan had ever been fired, the bolt face looks so pristine.

So the aperture sight is not a Lyman, it's a Williams 5D for the '94/336. Same same for my needs. Not mounted on the rifle, yet, as it's missing a mount screw.

Beauty you have there.

ACE Hardware probably has that screw you need.

Thanks everyone!

I have two shooting trips planned for this week; I have a break in my work sched and go back in March.

This Wedsnesday I am meeting up with Ojaileveraction from the Marlin Owners forum, in, of all places, Ojai, to shoot at a local private range.

Then this coming Saturday I'll meet up with the rest of the Mojave Lever Crew in the Mojave. G'wine be a good week.

Here are my three blued Marlins. From top to bottom, a 2005 manufactured 20" 1894 FG (.41 Magnum), the 1968-made 20" Texan carbine in .30-30 and a 1989-made 18.5" 1894CS357

Have fun my friend! Something struck me in your pic above. Isn't interesting that the rifle with the most recoil has the least recoil pad? Makes a guy go hmm?? You are very fortunate in your Marlin walnuts and blue.

I know, right. My old Winchester '94 had a steel buttplate.

I have a sand-to-fit foam pad from Marlin; I thought I'd need it for my 1895 GS but the GS's pad is sufficient (as are the loads) to relative comfort.

I just may... and this would devalue the Texan (but I buy my firearms first as shooters)... fit the new Marlin foam pad to the Texan. It would necessitate cutting the stock to arrive at the same LOP, but I may even go up to 3/8" shorter... this is something I'm going to have to ponder.

I'm sure I'll be pondering a bit harder after I first shoot it.

Hee.

Chris, what about a slip on/off Pachmayr Decelerator pad from Amazon? Bet that would work, if needed.

Tom, that's a good idear, but... I have one! I think they're fugly on the gun and they move around with every shot.

The 336 Texan isn't particularly "rare", but finding a good one this age is. So I don't know... might do it, might not... I can always load lighter fare for the plinkin' and save my rear sight elevation for the hunting loads.

Apples, can you find another wood stock that would fit your new rifle, and shorten that one, rather than chopping the original?....

It doesn't look good for Sat. A few days ago it was going to be nice, now it looks like a storm is coming in.
Regardless, I'm heading out late morning for Weldon, let's see how it looks. I don't mind cold, heat, rain or snow but I can't stand wind.

Yep, wind is predicted for Mojave for Saturday, but not for Adelanto.

Friday looks better. I might head out there then depending on how I feel Thursday. Thanks for the heads up.

Default Sighting in the factory buckhorn irons at 25 yds - 150 gr Core-Lokt

So there's this feller over on the Marlin Owners forum calls himself "Ojaileveraction" and a PM went out to a couple of us about meeting him up in Ojai to do some shooting up at the Ojai Valley Gun Club. We met for breakfast in Oak Hill, then I follered him up the hill to OVGC.

This place is a private range but on Nat'l Forest land. It is a gun club with a great facility. As his guest I was treated to one of the finest views in southern California. Unfortunately I did not take a picture from the line! where the view is the most spectacular.

IMG_1301.jpg

Ojaileveraction/Tim brought along eight! lever rifles. The three on the right are mine, the rest are all his. Tim is also a rifle silhouette shooter. After warming up with some minor caliber, first shot offhand with his 1895 to ring the 300 yard gong is nothin'.

IMG_1295.jpg

I was only interested in plinkin' and getting the Texan's factory buckhorn irons lined up at just under 25 yards using 150 grain Core-Lokts.

IMG_1298.jpg

There might be two through the bottom hole (that was a four-shot group that is touching), and the next two shots after that are touching, with the rifle resting on a borrowed bag. Good enough for me. This Texan's a keeper.

Wasn't there a 1968 Marlin Lever Action in the back window rifle rack towards the end of the 1969 movie, Easy Rider?
