Why I Chose a 20" AR-15
A 20" Ar15 with collapsible stock. I call it the 20" m16A5 clone because of its Vltor A5 buffer system.
This is our dog, Ryu! (REE-YOU) So I absolutely love rifle length Ar-15s. After shooting carbine, mid-length, and rifle AR's, I went with the rifle length. This one is pending registration. Some advantages: These are mostly theoretical -Higher velocity (although not that much more compared to shorter barrels, but it's nice to have when shooting at distance). -Complete powder burn (hate being wasteful), so theoretically less muzzle flash. -Reduced concussion, flash and pressure compared to my 11.5" ar pistol -Not very loud even with a muzzle brake on it and even more reduced recoil on top of having the rifle gas system. -Reduced bolt bounce and a more reliable feeding system due to heavier buffer weight and optimum amount of gas traveling to bolt assembly. -No questions reliable gas system out of the three (not saying mid-lengths or carbines are unreliable). -Cost! Finding rifle length barrels, parts and complete uppers was a lot cheaper than the 16 inch uppers. Overall, my build for a reliable rifle came out to about $900 buying new and used parts. Of Course the cons: weight- this one is 7lbs. 14 oz length (depending on environment). Used Vltor a5 buffer system to keep the heavier buffer and longer spring but still be able to adjust my stock on the go. Parts: BCM Complete 20" Upper w/ gov't profile barrel Strike Industries J Comp Magpul M-Lok rifle length handguard Magpul MVG Gunfighter Tactical rally lower Magpul BAD Lever PSA standard LPK Strike Industries Takedown pins, Cobra fang Trigger guard, and endplate BCM Medium Charging handle/ BCG Magpul MBUS Rears Vltor a5 buffer system with standard 5.3 oz buffer and rifle length buffer spring UTG Pro S1 stock So whether a 20" AR is right for you is completely up to you. Midlength and carbine rifles are great and I have no problem with them but every time I go to the range I always take my 20" AR. It's just a little better shooter for me. This will most likely be my SHTF rifle. I have no reservations or worries that this rifle will malfunction or fail on me. It's simple, it's reliable, and it's accurate. Keep it simple. Thanks for reading and I'm hear to answer any questions about this build. Take care, stay safe. Last edited by Allbert; 01-19-2017 at 12:21 PM.. |

old thread but without going out and buying a VOLTR A5 kit, could i just throw an H2 buffer in my Carbine length 6 position stock all while maintaining the same carbie length spring and be in the green?

I run a ST-T2 Heavy Buffer in my carbine buffer tube on my 20" rifle length barrel with no issues. It runs really smooth and reliable

Great looking rifle, but if you're in to the 20" build why not get an optic with +-6x magnification and make it in to an SPR?

This thing is a screaming deal. I was looking at this one for a SAM-R clones, but ultimately still not the Mark 4 with correct magnification (3-9). But damn its cheap, the optical quality will be insane for a scope that cheap.
But still, I think it would look nice on your build. http://www.eurooptic.com/leupold-mar...tmr-60210.aspx I got a 20 incher just recently, Stag had a great deal so I relented to assemble another AR. If anyone interested, 20" rifle kit for like $464. https://www.stagarms.com/model-4-rifle-kit/ **It is an HBAR** Last edited by Over It; 07-08-2017 at 7:53 AM.. |

With a lifetime barrel guarantee, even though it isn't chromed lined, I'm going to make it my varminter and shoot the bejeezus out of it.

I have a couple 20" AR's. They are my favorite variants and are superior in most situations, except in small spaces such as HD applications.

Nice. I love my 20" Larue, but the fat barrel makes it kind of a pig for anything tactical other than barrier shooting. Wish it was a little lighter. But for SPR style shooting and shots out to and beyond 800, it's nice to have.
What type of ammo do you plan to use with it? That will help somewhat in determining what kind of optic to buy. BTW, nice dog. I have a white shepherd, too.

I do most of my shooting at 200-400 yards with iron sights. So for me, I much prefer the 20" because of the longer sight radius and higher velocity.
But if I'm plinking around at 50-100 yards with friends or newbies, my 11.5" is just dandy. If I could only have one, it would be the 20".

I'd like to build an early M16 clone just for its history.
My only 20" now is a bull barreled RRA Varmint https://www.rockriverarms.com/index....TOKEN=87676424 Attachment 628871 Last edited by M1NM; 09-15-2018 at 6:07 PM.. |

Here is my bare bones 20" build. I put the pistol grip on in Nevada this weekend so I could use it as God intended.
I fell in love with it. While slightly heavier, it was very soft shooting. It was easier to use the irons without the recoil of a jumpy carbine. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk |

When it comes to Iron Sights or shooting at 200+ yards, I'll take the 20" rifle any day.

What are all the options for a PERMANENT integral ONE-PIECE carry handle receiver? I'd like a complete upper with carry handle. Even the ones here if you look close the are pic rails with bolt on.
I see STAG has stripped A2's but none complete that I could see. Windham (I assume is still like a good quality Bushmaster when Bushmaster was good stuff) looks like it has all bolt-on too. |

Nice! I love it. Always great to see people upgrade their guns with genuinely good stuff. You didn't cheap out on anything and you have a rifle you can be proud of. KAC 600m rear buis and Aimpoint?
All it needs now is a Surefire M600 and an SR07 pressure switch and you're basically done. Last edited by robledo; 11-07-2017 at 7:44 AM.. |
