Default 9mm over all length question

Hello cal gunners just had a quick question
I am reloading 9mm fmj using the hornady reloading manual and in this manual it's states col is 1.100
But when I measured a 9mm winchester white box 9mm fmj it measured 1.540 and then I measured
A 9mm federal fmj and measured 1.520
What am I missing is it powder deffernce that's way the bullet needs to sit lower to achieve the same pressure
Any help answering this question is greatly appreciated

That oal posted in the manual is probably the minimum. While max is what you set based off mag lenght, or chamber

You've got 1.5" 9mm rounds and can fit them in a magazine?

All mine are seated to 1.150.

Don't get hung up on measuring factory ammo. The components they use are generally not what you have. 1.5 is pretty long but the ogive may be different and allow them to work fine.

I always recommend to get a chrono, for around $120 you can't get better piece of mind. Start low on charge and work up. Honestly in 9mm I really don't see much fps difference in changing the OAL. If it feeds and ejects you're fine.

And this

I've got one bullet profile that doesn't fit in my glock 19 at 1.1. All my other guns will take that one bullet a bit longer.

So my 115g Bayou Coated would only work at 1.05. Good thing I don't load to max.

The book will tell you minimum length for maximum powder. Change anything in between and the end result will change.

Its all about bullet profile, then if it will fit in the mag. For coated 122 FP-NLG from Acme Bullets I have to load them to 1.05 for my CZs. If not the round will not chamber. Other profiles I load out to 1.125 without issue.

What bullets? 115gn, 124gn, RN or HP?

Everything matters. What brand of bullet, if that's not in a load data you need to find something similar and start low on charge.

My 124gn RN Copper Plated are loaded at 1.125, Flat Point 1.060.

Give us details on the bullet, powder, etc.

I think you need to remeasure those factory rounds. 1.5in is about .38 special and way beyond 9x19/luger/parabellum max length.

No need to post pics. Im guessing the caliper went nuts, or was mistakenly zeroed while it was open. 1.5in is way too long for 9mm. It wouldnt fit in any 9mm magazine, or chamber.

I think you mean 1.152 OAL

Presuming a 115gn bullet it would be longer than the bullet and case itself to get to 1.52

Just measuring a 115gn FMJ bullet end to end with a 9mm case is 1.3ish so there is 1/5th of an inch still to go to get to 1.5

ANYWAY...............

Bullet type and coating matters A LOT in regard to reliability and OAL.

I have 115gn poly coated that will only work at 1.10 OAL, but can load plated and jacketed 115's at 1.16+

It all really depends what can fit in the magazine, and then chamber in the barrel without being to long as an OAL before it engages the rifling/lands of the barrel.

Ideally, you want it just barely engaging the lands for reliability, and all that varies greatly based on the bullet itself.

1.169 is max, nothing in a box would be longer than that.

All the 9mm I load is between 1.060-1.130

Most of the magazines i use for 9mms are 1911 38 Super magazines, and a 9mm loaded to 1.52" won't even fit into those mags. I agree the OP probably meant 1.152, well within specs. But it depends on the bullet profile.

I have been loading my berry’s plated 115 rn to 1.132-1.129 and have had no issues that I notice but I don’t chrono them or anything. They fit my Glock and my sig and feed reliably enough for competition for me

My load for Everglade 9mm 124rn over 4.0gn 231 or HP-38 is seated to 1.125
My rule of thumb for OAL on a new bullet is to make it fit chamber and mag and I like .180” at minimum of bullet driving band gripped by the case to avoid set back from either or both, chambering a round or recoil effect on lower rounds in mag and I like to see my OAL’s around acceptable parameters of published data .
Bullet moulds have an affect on OAL. I have seen 2 bullets from different manufacturers of the same weight and ogive style require different OAL’s to avoid impingement on the lands by one.
My 115gn rn from Blue Bullet is seated to 1.120 with the same powder charge and manufacturers.

Very similar to my range loads, just 5gn and 1.125. Works in everything.
