I am not a fan of MREs, but I have a case of MREs from sometimes in the 1990s. The box got wet at some point and it looks horrible!

I should list it here for trade, see if anyone has any interesting junk they want to trade for it.

I like chili mac. I've been eye balling the same bag for about 10 years; my will power is strong.

I rotate mine out every 10 years. I donate them to a homeless shelter and claim the value as one of my itemized deductions.

The "cheese" tastes better once heated up, and cooled down many times, then it gets, coagulated-chunky, and bitter,... like Sharp Cheddar.

Everything I was issued (on the DARK brown, not that hippy-light brown) was "chunky" and bitter".
I never got creamy cheese out of one of those.

Does MREs still have skittles or m&m in it? A miniature tabasco, coffee packet or apple cider packet, enough TP for 1 *******, matches, and gum?

It's been time for me to rotate out a couple of cases, but the pandemic drove the cost per case way up for a while. They're down some now, but I decided to try the First Strike Ration MREs, which are high speed, low drag, stripped down versions - a day's worth of calories per pouch (9 pouches per case), without some of the more useless stuff included, and a better value vs caloric content than standard MREs.

https://www.mreinfo.com/other-us-rat...strike-ration/

I'm sampling the ones that just came in (inspect date 8/22), and the one I opened had the classic jalapeno cheese spread in it. It was yellow, smooth, and creamy, unlike the 15-20 year old ones that turn brown and chunky (but still taste pretty decent if warmed up a bit).

The 2005 boxes I've been eating have all that. The gum's hard and crunchy, but softens up with a bit of chewing. I don't care much for the Skittles, which also get crunchy in their old age, but I'll eat the M&Ms, and they're not much different from current ones.

The gum from the First Strike accessory pack above was much nicer, being much fresher. These MREs also include the caffeinated military gum (MEG - Military Energy Gum). I haven't tried that yet, but will soon.

The amusing part of the energy gum is this warning:
Quote:
Do not exceed more than 4 pieces in 24 hours for civilians.
Do not exceed more than 10 pieces in 24 hours for military.

Your emergency food stores should always be in a state of rotation. You shouldn't buy any commodity all at the same time. If you purchase an item in smaller quantities periodically, (monthly/quarterly/annually) until you reach your desired total quantity, you can then use/replace it at the same rate and never end up with a bunch of potentially stale food you need to eat or toss.
