Your Opinion on Cowboy gun in .22/.22Mag
Looking to buy either the Ruger Single Six Convertible or the
Heritage Arms Rough Rider Small Bore 22LR/22MAG Revolver, 6.5". The Ruger is twice the price. Is it worth that? I don't hunt, just back yard plinking and range stuff. I'm opting for the cowboy gun instead of say a GSG so that I can shoot the low velocity stuff and not bother the not-so-near neighbors Ruger would be used, Heritage would be new. Tommy

I have the Ruger SS Convertible. I think very highly of it in all aspects. Although I don't have experience with the Heritage, I hear good things overall.
Keep in mind that buying a used Ruger anything is relatively low risk. The company backs their product. Good aftermarket support too if you find the need to change out sights, grips, etc. |

I have had a single six for decades. Love it.
My son bought a rough rider and immediately sold it. It was so inaccurate and non adjustable sights made it worthless. Some come from the factory fairly accurate I have read. My choice single six....and while you are at it go for stainless because a lifetime gun |

If this is your first 22lr hand gun then you'll get bored real quick. If your set on a single action pistol then the Ruger is a no brainer. The Rough Rider is a big POS comparer to any Single Six. Yes I've owned both. Also, low velocity ammo, even Colibri Super at 20gr exits 16" bbl no problem. Its very loud in a 4-5" bbl pistol.

I have owned three Ruger Single Six revolvers, and all of them were very accurate. After I sell one, I end up replacing it. My fourth Single Six is waiting for me to fill out the paper work and start the waiting period.

I have an old single six with both cylinders, a FIE buffalo scout with both cylinders (cheap copy) and I get my Wrangler on the 17th.
Get a used single six and you will not be disappointed. If the wrangler came with dual cylinders i’d Say go that route. If you really want something quiet then get a bolt .22 rifle. |

I have the Rough Rider and I like it but is not up to the quality of the Ruger but its also way cheaper! I never had any issues with it besides bad 555 ammo:-) |

Another vote for the Single Six Convertible. I have a stainless/ 6-1/2 bbl 'new model'. The thing is a tack driver when I do my part. The gun is built like a tank. I put after-market grips from Ruger on mine. The new grips are wood with checkering. The checkering really helps with grip, and is not too aggressive.
I shoot CCI MiniMag and CCI WMR in mine. --P

Two years from now you won't remember what you paid for the Ruger Super Single Six. But your kids will thank you for allowing them to inherit it. I know my kids will even though mine dates from 1976, and with 1,000s of rounds through it, still looks and shoots like new.

I like shooting the Rough Rider EXCEPT with .22 MAG shells. Feels like it is going to come apart.

Another vote for the Rough Rider and getting the .22WMR cylinder as well. My RR is fun but for .22LR/.22WMR plinking, I couldn't justify spending the amount needed to get a Ruger. I put the money not spent toward another serious (center fire) firearm.

I have a problem with both... The grip is so tiny it swims in my hand. I really like the single action style. Dad got a Single Six back in 1960, before I was born. He has always shot it well, but I have never been accurate off-hand.
Had same issue with Ruger Blackhawk. Shot great off bench/sandbag,but off-hand not so much. I shoot other pistols accurately. But not the Single-Six and Blackhawk. |

IF you buy the Rough Rider get the model with the Fiber optic Sights (6.5in bbl), the only way I'd buy another RR and I have 2 out of the original 3, also have Single Six but C&R so doesn't get shot much.
Wasn't aware Ruger had a 22 mag cylinder out for the Wranger now, will have to check it out. |

I recently picked up a Wrangler. I went to look at the RR and just couldn't get past the the cheap feeling. I had cap guns as a kid that were on this level (impression). I liked the idea of convertible, but in reality, 22RM really doesn't bring anything to the table in this platform. I have some nice .22LR handguns, autos and revolvers. But the Wrangler fits a price nitch the others don't. Just a have along camp gun with minimal investment that at the same time should stand the test of time. I certainly wouldn't turn down a convertible Single-six, but then I'd have to hold to a bit loftier function.

I bought a rough rider with the crappy sights on it. Functions just fine, but isn't nearly as easy to shoot as that one wordup bought.
For the price, it's a fun plinker and trainer. I would have preferred the Ruger, but at 1/4 the cost... Now, I'd buy the Wrangler, if I was to do it over. |

But I like it because I can dry fire it without snap caps. I want to use it to train my kids some day and I think the safety would be useful. |
