I've had a ton of fun with my 10/22 and am looking to get a more manual rimfire to expand my rimfire selection. I'm intrigued by bolt action 17WSM rifles but in reading about the Volquartsen Summit version it appears there's some big QC problems with the brass. Has this been addressed or is it still spotty? Assuming I still want a 17 what's my best option? 17HMR?

17WSM is too much pressure for a blowback operated semi-auto.
It's great in a bolt action.

I know nothing about the 17WSM, I don't own one. I do own a 17HMR and it's a great round. I have a Savage B17 and it's just too much fun to shoot. I highly recommend them.

Video just came out.
FRANKLIN ARMORY F17L(17 WSM) - THE MOST POWERFUL RIMFIRE IN THE WORLD! Being a rimfire, I suspect it would be Cal legal without removing features?

I have a 17 WSM barrel for a T/C single shot. Fair number of misfires, even with an extra power mainspring installed. Don't know if that would be an issue with the Franklin semi.

The TC's firing pin does not properly align with the rim of the WSM case. Look at some of your fired cases and compare them to how a 22LR or magnum fired cases look after being fired in the same TC frame. The solution is to get/make a new breechface with the firing pin further offset.

I have a Savage Heavy Barrel in .17 WSM and it's my favorite bolt action rifle for small game and reactive targets. It vaporizes potatoes all day long at 100 yards. It destroys tomato paste cans at longer distances and sprays red mist everywhere.
I believe Franklin Armory would be a great semi auto 17 WSM.....if I won the lottery! |

.17 WSM is a great varmint cartridge, especially in an AR for Kalifornia.
My problem is the high prices of Franklin Armory AR's in .17 WSM. I would have bought one long ago if the prices would drop $500 to $700. The other problem is ammo is darn expensive and hard to find.

My itch was for a .17 HMR just to plink at ground squirrels, but I wanted a semi auto. Looked around and found Alexander Arms sold a .17 HMR upper for the AR-15, so I bought one. While it was pricey, it fit on my Colt M-4 lower no problems, and I bought extra mags and spare parts (just in case). The manufacturer rep said it may not work with the CCI Green Lead Free 16 grain bullet load, but not only did it work flawlessly, but also shot amazing little groups at 50 yards. I also have a Savage bolt action .17 HMR 93R17 BTV but the AR-15 is just more fun.
